Microsoft SDK for Java Version 3.0

Pre-release 1

This version of the SDK includes:

  • The Microsoft Win32 Virtual Machine for Java: This release continues our Virtual Machine performance leadership, and provides significant new features including improved diagnostic interfaces for debugging and profiling, package manager interface and performance enhancements, a new exegen format which supports resources, classloader support for multiple codebases, integration of the WFC component model with the Virtual Machine's ActiveXTM   interoperability, extensions to the COM and J/Direct marshaling engines, COM type library extensions for Microsoft Transaction Server (MTS), and performance enhancements for delegates.
  • Application Foundation Classes (AFC): AFC provides a suite of user interface components and graphics effects classes for building richer user interfaces that will work with a number of popular browsers.
  • Other featured packages include DirectXTM 3 for Java, DirectAnimationTM, XML, Win32 API classes for J/Direct, and a comprehensive set of samples.
  • Development tools and utilities: These are located in the SDK \Bin directory and its subdirectories. In order to use the tools, please set the path accordingly. The SDK for Java includes the latest pre-release version of the Microsoft Compiler for Java (which will not automatically replace the VJ++ compiler if a developer has VJ++ installed), AWT2AFC for migrating AWT applets to AFC, NT Service conversion utility, packaging and signing tools, Javareg, JActiveX (a new COM support conversion tool), and many others.
  • The SDK also includes the Microsoft JDBC-ODBC Bridge.

Please read the license before using the SDK.

Upcoming Pre-release 2

Microsoft SDK for Java Version 3.0 pre-release 2 will include JIT Debugging, a key feature which transparently provides debugging of JIT compiled code on the existing debugger interfaces.  This feature is partially documented in the documentation provided with pre-release 1, but is not yet included in the shipping Virtual Machine.

Bug Reporting

Please use the on-line bug report provided on our http://www.microsoft.com/java/misc/sdkbug.htm page.

Support

Paid developer support is not available for pre-release versions.   As an alternative, you will find a valuable resource in the Microsoft sponsored public newsgroups.

Peer-to-peer newsgroups are available to help you interact with other users of our products. You can use any newsreader software to access these newsgroups. However, we suggest downloading Internet Mail and News from the Microsoft Internet Explorer Home page. With Microsoft Internet Mail and News installed, after you click on a newsgroup link, you'll be prompted for different configuration information. When prompted for News Server, specify "msnews.microsoft.com" without the quotation marks.

NOTE: You do not need to enter an account name or password.

If you are using an NNTP newsreader (sometimes called a news client) other than Internet Mail and News, don't forget to configure it to read the newsgroups. The Microsoft news server name is msnews.microsoft.com.
