Glossary

The tables below should give you the information you need to determine, of which an internet address is, that is where the server is located and what type of institution stands behind the server. Depening where the server is located, a domain address is made up of several parts.
Chapter 1 Europe and rest of the world (except USA)

A domain address in Europe normal consists of three or four single domains. The top level domain (last domain), usually gives the country, in which the server is located. This usually is a two letter domain like at or uk. If the entire domain name consists of four domains, then the domain before the country domain, gives the type of institution, to whom the server belongs. If there are only three domains, then the server mostly belongs to either a governmental institutaion or is a commercial server. So here are some examples for domain names:

  • web.de Note the missing www !
The following table shows the defined institutional definition domains:

.or. non-profit organisation
.gv. governmental site
.priv. Private Site / Site that does not fit into other category

Most of the servers follow the above mentioned rules. However, you will encounter domain names, which do not follow these rules. Why ? Often this are very special sites, owned by special and rich institutions.
