Books are normally divided into chapters or sections. They often have a table of contents, preface, appendices, epilog and index. While you can create a book as a simple sequence of pages, it is easier to use PageStream's book publishing features.
All pages are at the document level. Pages are numbered sequentially.
PageStream allows you to divide your document into chapters. You can add pages at the document level, for your table of contents and preface, and at the chapter level, for the body of your document.
You can number the pages in each chapter consecutively or independently. If you number the pages consecutively, you can set whether the next chapter will begin on the next available, next even, or next odd page.
Pages can be at both the document and chapter levels. Pages at the document level are numbered first, then pages in each of the chapters. This example uses the default Start at Next Odd Page numbering option, which forces the first page in each chapter to begin on an odd page number.
PageStream also allows you to divide your chapters into subchapters, and your subchapters into subsubchapters, etc. You can restart page numbering at the start of any chapter or subchapter, as required. Note that since PageStream formats page numbers at each insertion independently of other page numbers, you can mix numbering systems in your document. For example, you could use Roman numbers in your preface and Arabic numbers in the chapters.
Pages at the document level are numbered first, then pages in each of the chapters and their subchapters. This example uses the default Start at Next Odd Page numbering option, which forces the first page in each chapter to begin on an odd page number.
Master pages can exist at the document, chapter or subchapter level. If a master page is at the document level, any page at any level of the document can use it. If a master page is at the chapter level, only pages in that chapter or its subchapters can use it.
To move between chapters using the Dcoument Palette double click on a document or chapter to go to the first page in that document or chapter. Double click on masterpages to go to that masterpage.
The Go to Page button opens a dialog box to select the chapter and page to edit.
To move to a chapter: Click the Go to Page button. The Go to Page
dialog box will appear. Choose a chapter name from the Chapter pop-up menu
to move to a page in a chapter, or choose the document name to move to a
page at the document level. Enter the page number into the Page text box
or leave blank to go to the first page in that document or chapter. If you
wish to move to a master page, choose the Master Page name from the Chapter
pop-up menu, and if the document is double-sided, the master page side from
the Side pop-up menu.
You can add, delete and reorder chapters and subchapters. The Document palette is used for all chapter arrangement tasks. Choose Show Document Palette from the Window menu to display the Document palette.

When you add a chapter, the Chapter Setup dialog box will appear. Enter a name for the chapter, set its pagination options, and click OK.
To reorder chapters: Drag a chapter icon to another position in the scrolling list. A horizontal bar will appear between the icons of the existing chapters when you have correctly positioned the chapter icon. You can move chapters within their current document or chapter level, or move chapters into other chapters, or from a chapter to the document level.
To delete a chapter: Drag the chapter icon to the palette's Trash icon.
