WizGuard Features at A Glance

Rules-Based filtering Technology WizGuard uses content sensitive rules-based filtering technology to block browser access to pornographic and sexually explicit Web sites. It is also PICS standard compliant, recognizing PICS labels from RSACi and SafeSurf. Browsers supported currently are Netscape and Microsoft Internet Explorer.
Easy to Use WizGuard uses a very simple user interface.
Allowed Site and Site to Block User can add more Web sites to block, or sites to allow access. When a wildcard "*" is entered for a site to block, all sites are blocked except those allowed by the user.
Online Access Time Management User can specify time allowed each day to surf the Web.
Tamper Proof WizGuard uses password to control access to its operation.

WizGuard Operation

Please note that you can only operate WizGuard while it is running, i.e., there is either a red W or blue W WizGuard icon in the task bar at the bottom of your Windows screen.
Following is a brief description of all features accessible via "File" menu of the WizGuard window.

Enter License:
After you have purchased a WizGuard license, you need to select this to enter the license number sent to you by WizGuard Company. It will enable you to use WizGuard permanently. Otherwise, WizGuard will disable itself after 14 day trial period.

Change Password:
The password for free trial copy of WizGuard is wizguard. Password cannot be changed for trial copy. However, after you purchase the license, you will be able to change the password. This ensures you are the only one who can operate WizGuard.

Add Allowed Site:
This allows user to enter site names to bypass WizGuard content sensitive blocking. Note that when entering site names, it is suggested to enter domain name only, e.g., if the site is: http://www.yahoo.com, you just need to enter "yahoo.com". No "http" and "www" is needed.

Remove Allowed Site:
This allows user to remove a previously added allowed site. Just high-light the site to remove and click ok.

Add Site to Block:
User can use this to add site to block, this is in addition to WizGuard's content sensitive blocking. When entering site names, please use domain name only, e.g., yahoo.com, not http://www.yahoo.com.
When a "*" is entered as a site name, this makes WizGuard block all web sites, except those sites in the "allowed" list added by user. This feature can be used to restrict web access to a small group of web sites.

Remove Site to Block:
This allows user to remove a previously added blocking site. Just high-light the site to remove and click ok.

Time Management:
This feature enables you to control the time allowed each day for Web surfing. Note that this time is accumulative. E.g., if you have a limit of 2 hours, that means if you run your browser for one hour, quit and then restart it, it will run for another hour before the restriction applies. The default time limit is 24 hours per day, i.e., no time restriction.
IMPORTANT:
When brower time limit is exceeded, you cannot access any new Web sites. If you wish to continue Web browsing, you must go to Time Management to set a new time limit, which will reset the counter.

Special Notes

This section contains additional information to help using WizGuard effectively.
1. Browser Cache
Your browser sometimes stores Web content in local hard disk. So next time when you visit the same site, if the content
is not changed, the browser will load it from hard disk instead of from the Internet. This is called "cache".
It is advised to clean up the cache after you surf the Web while WizGuard is disabled. So WizGuard can effectively
block Web pages received from the Internet the next time it is enabled.
Following describes how to clean up cache for various browsers.
Netscape Communicator:
select "Edit", "Preferences", "Advanced", "Cache", click on "Clear Disk Cache".
Netscape Navigator:
select "Options", "Network Preferences", "Cache", click on "Clear Disk Cache".
Internet Explorer Version 3:
select "View", "Options", "Advanced", click on "Settings" in "Temporary Internet Files", then click on "Empty folder".
Internet Explorer Version 4:
select "View", "Internet Options", click on "Delete Files".

2. "Cannot find file (or one of its components)" Windows 95 error message.
Sometimes, when you invoke your Netscape by double-clicking on a HTML file, you will get this error message. Simply ignore this message. Your browser will be launched correctly. Then you can use "Open File" in your browser to open the HTML file.
