Before you insert this applet, make sure that the document you are inserting it in has been saved at least once.

To insert the applet, drag and drop the mouse (8) into a HoTMetaL PRO document. A Design-Time Control window that will allow you to configure the applet will appear. Some features of the slide show can be specified when you run the applet.

Slide Show applet 8

Overview

The Slide Show applet implements a slide show by displaying a series of GIF or JPEG images. Note: At the time of this release, this applet runs only in Netscape Navigator 3.0.

The images are displayed in a separate window from the main browser window, so that the user can continue to view the slide show after they have moved to another page. The slide show can be run automatically or manually. Any image in the slide show can act as a link to another page, which will be displayed in the browser.

Setting up the slide show

When you drag this applet to the HoTMetaL PRO document, a dialog box (called a Design-Time Control) appears; this enables you to set up the slide show.

The fields in this dialog box should be filled out as follows:

Applet parameters

  • Height and Width specify the amount of space in the main browser window that will be reserved for this applet. Since the slide show is played in a separate window, you can set both of these values to 0 (zero) if you like. If you choose positive dimensions, the applet will be displayed as a grey rectangle.
  • Site Root Dir: choose the folder in which the HTML page containing the applet has been saved. (This is necessary if you wish to preview the applet from your local disk.)
  • Use FastLoader: a program that speeds up the loading of the applet.

Slide Show Parameters

  • Target Frame: if you want the pages that are linked to individual images to be displayed in a particular frame (if a frames-based document is being displayed in the browser), enter the frame name here. Hint: to display the page in a separate browser window, enter an undefined frame name.
  • Background Color: the background color of the slide show window.
  • Autorun: turn on the control to cause the slide show to run automatically. This setting can be changed to "manual" when the applet is run.
  • Default Delay: the time between images if the slide show runs automatically. This value can be changed when the applet is run. Note: this value should be entered in seconds, not milliseconds as indicated in this dialog box.
  • Max delay: the maximum time between images if the slide show runs automatically. Note: this value should be entered in seconds, not milliseconds as indicated in this dialog box.
  • Image Relative URL, Destination URL: click on Add to enter an filename or URL for an image, and optionally, a page that is linked to that image; click on an existing entry and then click on Edit to change the entry (you can also edit an entry by clicking once on the entry in the list to make it editable, and then typing your changes); click on an existing entry and then click on Remove to remove the entry.

Note: the images in the slide show are positioned based on the dimensions of the first image in the list. Ideally, the first image will be both the highest and widest image in the slide show.

Click on OK when you have finished the setup. You can display this dialog box again by right-clicking on the applet icon and choosing DTC Properties... from the pop-up menu.

Running the slide show

When the browser opens the page, it automatically loads the applet and displays the Slide Show window. If you chose Autorun when you set up the applet, the slide show will run automatically. You can decrease or increase the delay time, up to the maximum that was specified on setup. If you choose Manual, you can use the arrows to display the next or previous slide. Clicking on an image will display the page linked to that image (if there is one).
