If you like a pub with atmosphere, but don't want noise pollution, it's worth hunting out The Quiet Pint, produced by Q publications and the Daily Telegraph at around £10. There's something rather attractive in the thought of being able to sink into a pint and a good conversation without being drowned out by muzak and the fruit machine.

There are no maps in The Quiet Pint, leaving the pub-finder at the mercy of short but generally comprehensible directions. Entries are limited, giving a handful of lines to each of the atmosphere and food, and a shorter remark about the beer - but if peace is your aim, it's simply enough to know the pub is in here. There's a fair amount of overlap with the bigger boys (this is about the only guide that really will fit in your pocket), but occasionally you'll find a pub that otherwise might have been considered a little ordinary, included for its quietness.
