Previewing the effects of export settings

The Preview Export Compression button displays an approximation of how your composition will look given the current export settings and file size. It lets you edit the composition or change compression settings to further reduce file size and preview the result for image quality. All commands and tools function in Preview Export Compression mode. For information on changing export settings, see Understanding the export report.

The two sections along the bottom left of the status bar (Windows) or Composition window (Mac OS) display the composition's size and the size of any selected object at the current frame. If you have selected individual objects, an icon indicates whether they will be exported as bitmap objects, vector objects, or a combination of both. Selected objects in the composition display a red border when Preview Export Compression is on. Exporting to GIF, Animated GIF, JPEG, PNG, or QuickTime displays only the size of the entire composition at each frame (only animated GIF and QuickTime have more than one frame).

Important: Performance slows when you work in Preview Export Compression mode, so it's a good idea to use this mode only for proofing your work.

There are several ways to preview animations. For general information, see Playing animations. For information on previewing an animation, see Previewing using Preview mode or a Web browser.

To preview the effects of the current Export palette settings:

  1. Make the Composition window active.
  2. Choose View > Preview Export Compression.
  3. In the status bar (Windows) or the lower left of the Composition window (Mac OS), view the current frame and object size that result from changing Export palette settings.
  4. If needed, change the Export palette settings, or edit your composition until you reach an optimal balance between file size and image quality.
  5. Choose View >Preview Export Compression to turn off Preview Export Compression. (Leaving it on decreases performance.)
