Installing and Removing Options

(Ref #86.) This chapter provides information about how to install or remove external or internal devices and IBM options.

  • Installing and Removing PC Cards

    This section explains how to install and remove a PC Card. For information about operating the computer with PC Cards, refer to "Using PC Cards".

    The computer has two PC Card slots (upper slot * Figure n1 not displayed. and lower slot * Figure n2 not displayed.), and you can install two Type I or Type II PC Cards (one in each slot), or a single Type III PC Card (in the lower slot).

    Note:
    When installing an operating system, install the PCMCIA device driver that is on the PC Card Director Diskette before using PC Cards.


    To install the PCMCIA device driver:

    Inserting the PC Card

    (Ref #87.)       To insert the PC Card to the computer:

    1. Find the notched edge * Figure n1 not displayed. of the PC Card as shown.

    2. Insert the PC Card into an appropriate slot according to your PC Card type. Slot covers open to the inside when you insert the PC Card.

    3. Press the PC Card firmly into the connector until the eject button * Figure n1 not displayed. pops out. Then pull the eject button out slightly and fold it to the left.

    Removing the PC Card

     
    Attention
    Before removing such storage PC Cards as the hard disk PC Card, flash memory PC Card, or SRAM PC Card from the PC Card slot, turn off the computer. Otherwise, data in the PC Card may be corrupted or lost.

    However, there is a safe way to remove the storage PC Card without turning off the computer. See "Removing the Storage PC Cards".


    Attention:
    Make sure the PC Card lock is removed.


    To remove PC Card lock:
    > "Removing the PC Card Lock".

    Installing a Memory Option

    (Ref #88.)        

    Increasing memory capacity is an effective way to make programs run faster. You can increase the amount of memory in your computer by installing a memory option, called a dual inline memory module, or DIMM.

    Important
    Changing memory while your computer is in suspend mode or hibernation mode may cause permanent damage to the equipment.

    Which type of computer are you using?

    ThinkPad 760E, 760ED, or 760EL
    Go to "Installing and Removing the DIMM for the 760E, 760ED, or 760EL".

    ThinkPad 760XD or 760XL
    Go to "Installing and Removing the DIMM for the 760XD or 760XL".

    Installing and Removing the DIMM for the 760E, 760ED, or 760EL

    (Ref #89.)    

    1. Touch any metal object with your hand.

    2. Turn off the computer; then disconnect the AC Adapter and all cables from it.

    3. If you are using any locking device with a security keyhole, remove it.

    4. Press and slide the security latch * Figure n1 not displayed. on the right side of the computer to unlock the security lock.

      Some pressure might be needed to slide the latch.

    5. Turn over the computer. Press the switch * Figure n1 not displayed. as shown (* Figure c79chc1 not displayed.) and slide the memory slot cover and remove it (* Figure c79chc2 not displayed.).

    6. Remove the DIMM adapter by lifting up the edge * Figure n1 not displayed. from the computer, and place it on a flat surface.

      Attention:
      To avoid damaging the DIMM, do not touch its contact edge.

    7. Which are you going to do?

      Install a DIMM
      Go to the next step.

      Remove a DIMM
      Go to step 10.

    8. Insert the DIMM (available as an option) into either of the vacant sockets on the DIMM adapter.

      Attention:
      When attaching the DIMM to the DIMM adapter, place the DIMM adapter on a flat surface. Otherwise, the DIMM adapter may be damaged.

      1. Find the notch * Figure n1 not displayed. on the side of the DIMM.

      2. With the notch of the DIMM lined up with the projection of the socket, insert the DIMM, at an angle of approximately 20°, into the socket (* Figure c79chc1 not displayed.). Then press it firmly.

      3. Pivot the DIMM until it snaps into place (* Figure c79chc2 not displayed.).
      If you have another DIMM to install, insert it into the other socket in the same way.

    9. Go to step 11.

    10.  Press out on the latches on both edges of the socket at the same time and remove the DIMM.

      Attention:
      To avoid damaging the DIMM, do not touch its contact edge.

      Be sure to save the DIMM for future use.

    11.  Attach the DIMM adapter to the computer.

      1. Turn over the DIMM adapter.

      2. Place it into the memory slot and then align its connector * Figure n1 not displayed. with that of the memory slot * Figure n2 not displayed..

      3. Press on the shaded area * Figure n1 not displayed. until the DIMM adapter snaps into the memory slot connector.

        Press on three points (both sides and center) of the shaded area.

      4. Make sure the DIMM adapter is firmly connected.

    12. Replace the memory slot cover:

      1. Align two marks on the memory slot cover and the bottom of the computer (* Figure c79chc1 not displayed.). Seat the cover from * Figure c79chc2 not displayed. and then * Figure c79chc3 not displayed. as shown.

      2. Slide the memory slot cover until it snaps into the computer.

      3. Make sure the latch * Figure n1 not displayed. is in the correct position, as shown.

    13. To confirm that the DIMM is correctly attached to the computer, do the following:

      1.  Calculate your total memory size by adding the DIMM memory size to the base memory size (for example, 7808KB).

        For example, if you installed two 16MB DIMMs in addition to 7808KB base memory, the total memory size can be calculated as follows:

            16(MB) x 2 x 1024(KB) + 7808(KB) = 40576(KB)
        

      2. Start Easy-Setup and confirm the memory size count at the upper left corner of the screen as shown:

        Note:
        To start Easy-Setup, press and hold F1; then turn on the computer.

        If a 201 error code appears under the memory count, turn off the computer and go to "Installing and Removing the DIMM for the 760E, 760ED, or 760EL" to reinstall the DIMM.

      3. Is the total memory size the same as the value you calculated in step 1?

        Yes
        Go to the next step.

        No
        Turn off the computer and go to "Installing and Removing the DIMM for the 760E, 760ED, or 760EL" to reinstall the DIMM.

      4. Select Test from the main menu of Easy-Setup; then select Memory.

        The memory test starts.

        Note:
        It may take some time to complete the memory test.

      5. Does an OK message now appear under the Memory icon?

        Yes
        You have installed the DIMM and DIMM adapter correctly. Exit Easy-Setup and go to next step.

        No
        You need to reinstall the DIMM adapter. Go to "Installing and Removing the DIMM for the 760E, 760ED, or 760EL" and reinstall the DIMM adapter.

    14. Slide the latch * Figure n1 not displayed. to lock the memory slot cover.

      To prevent the installed DIMMs from being removed from the computer, attach a lock to the security keyhole. See "Using the Security Lock".

    15. Close the keyboard and reconnect all cables.
    Note
    If you changed the memory installed in the computer, create a new hibernation file to use hibernation mode. See "Creating the Hibernation File".

    Installing and Removing the DIMM for the 760XD or 760XL

       

    1. Touch any metal object with your hand.

    2. Turn off the computer; then disconnect the AC Adapter and all cables from the computer.

    3. If you are using any locking device with a security keyhole, remove it.

    4. Open the LCD; then open the keyboard.

    5. Remove the hard disk drive.

      Be careful to hold the drive as it comes out of the bay. Gently place it on a flat surface.

      Attention:
      The hard disk drive is a very delicate device that needs careful handling. If it falls onto a hard surface, severe damage can occur.

    6. Slide the switch * Figure n1 not displayed. to the left (* Figure c79chc1 not displayed.) and open the sheet * Figure n2 not displayed. (* Figure c79chc2 not displayed.).

    7. Which are you going to do?

      Install a DIMM
      Go to the next step.

      Remove a DIMM
      Go to step 13.

    8. Locate the DIMM slots.

      Note:
      Some models already have a DIMM on the left memory slot.

    9. Which type is your DIMM?

      8MB, 16MB, or 32MB DIMM
      Go to step 11.

      64MB 2-bank DIMM
      Go to the next step.

      Note:
      The computer does not support a 64MB 1-bank DIMM option.

    10. To install a 64MB 2-bank DIMM option, you must do the following:

      1. Slide switch * Figure aa not displayed. to the left position with the tip of a pen as follows:

      2. Insert the 64MB 2-bank DIMM into slot * Figure n2 not displayed.. (For the actual installation, see the next step.) A 64MB 2-bank DIMM works only in slot * Figure n2 not displayed..

        Note: When you install a 64MB 2-bank option, the 8MB base memory * Figure bb not displayed. permanently attached to the DIMM adapter card is unavailable. So the total memory size will be 8MB less than what you might expect.

        For example, if you install a 32MB memory and a 64MB memory in the memory slots, the total memory size is 104MB (maximum memory size):

           8MB (on the system board) + 32MB (on the memory slot * Figure n1 not displayed.)
           + 64MB (on the memory slot * Figure n2 not displayed.) = 104MB
        

    11.  Insert the DIMM into either of the vacant sockets on the DIMM adapter.

      Note:
      If your DIMM is a 64MB 2-bank DIMM, see the previous step.

      1. Find notch * Figure n1 not displayed. on the side of the DIMM.

      2. With the notch of the DIMM lined up with the projection of the socket, insert the DIMM, at an angle of approximately 20°, into the socket (* Figure c79chc1 not displayed.). Press it firmly.

      3. Pivot the DIMM until it snaps into place (* Figure c79chc2 not displayed.).
      If you have another DIMM to install, insert it into the other socket in the same way. * Figure c79ch820 not displayed.

    12. Go to step 14.

    13.  Press out on the latches on both edges of the socket at the same time and remove the DIMM.

      Attention:
      To avoid damaging the DIMM, do not touch its contact edge.

      Be sure to save the DIMM for future use.

    14.  Put the sheet * Figure n1 not displayed. back (* Figure c79chc1 not displayed.) and slide the switch * Figure n2 not displayed. to the right as shown (* Figure c79chc2 not displayed.). * Figure c79chse2 not displayed.

    15. Reinstall the hard disk drive. Press on the shaded area * Figure n1 not displayed. as shown until the drive snaps into the connector and then replace the hard disk drive handle. * Figure c79ch680 not displayed.

    16. Close the keyboard, and connect the AC Adapter to the computer.

    17. To confirm that the DIMM is correctly attached to the computer, do the following:

      1.  Calculate your total memory size by adding the DIMM memory size to the base memory size (for example, 16000KB).

        Note:
        For the base memory size of your computer, see Appendix C. "Features and Specifications".

        For example, if you installed a 16MB DIMM in addition to 16000KB base memory, the total memory size can be calculated as follows:

            16(MB) x 1024(KB) + 16000(KB) = 32384(KB)
        
        When installing a 64MB 2-bank DIMM
        When you installed a 64MB 2-bank DIMM, subtract 8MB from the total memory size.

      2. Start Easy-Setup and confirm the memory size count at the upper left corner of the screen as shown:

        Note:
        To start Easy-Setup, press and hold F1; then turn on the computer.

        If a 201 error code appears under the memory count, turn off the computer and go to "Installing and Removing the DIMM for the 760E, 760ED, or 760EL" to reinstall the DIMM.

      3. Is the total memory size the same as the value you calculated in step 1?

        Yes
        Go to the next step.

        No
        Turn off the computer and go to "Installing and Removing the DIMM for the 760E, 760ED, or 760EL" to reinstall the DIMM.

      4. Select Test from the main menu of Easy-Setup; then select Memory.

        The memory test starts.

        Note:
        It may take some time to complete the memory test.

      5. Does an OK message now appear under the Memory icon?

        Yes
        You have installed the DIMM correctly. Exit Easy-Setup and go to next step.

        No
        You need to reinstall the DIMM. Go to "Installing and Removing the DIMM for the 760E, 760ED, or 760EL" and reinstall the DIMM.

    18. Turn off the computer and reconnect all cables.
    Note
    If you changed the memory installed in the computer, create a new hibernation file to use hibernation mode. See "Creating the Hibernation File".



    Replacing the Hard Disk Drive

    (Ref #90.)       You can increase the capacity of the hard disk by replacing the original hard disk drive with an optional one. You can purchase this option through your IBM authorized reseller or IBM marketing representative.

    1.  Turn off the computer; then disconnect the AC Adapter and all cables from the computer.

    2. Open the LCD; then open the keyboard.

      Attention:
      Make sure the security latch at the right side of the computer is unlocked. (See step 2.)


      Attention:
      The hard disk drive is a very delicate device that needs careful handling. If it falls onto a hard surface, severe damage can occur.

    3. Lift the hard disk drive handle by pulling the plastic tape * Figure n1 not displayed.. * Figure c79ch26a not displayed.

    4. Remove the hard disk drive.

      Be careful to hold the drive as it comes out of the bay. Gently place it on a flat surface. After removing the drive, store it in the carrying case that contained the replacement drive.

    5. Insert the replacement drive. Press on the shaded area * Figure n1 not displayed. as shown until the drive snaps into the connector and then replace the hard disk drive handle.

    6. Close the keyboard, and connect the AC Adapter to the computer; then turn on the computer.



    Installing the CD-ROM Drive

       

    To remove the diskette drive from the UltraBay and install the CD-ROM drive:

    Note:
    If you are using DOS or Windows, you can remove the diskette drive without turning off the computer. Refer to the documents supplied with your operating systems.

    1. Make sure that no diskette is in the diskette drive.

    2. Open the LCD; then open the keyboard.

    3. Lift the handle on the diskette drive with the plastic tape, and remove the diskette drive.

      Attention:
      Make sure that any locking device is unlocked.

      The CD-ROM and diskette drives are very delicate devices that need careful handling. Do not press on, drop, or apply any shock to the drives when they are removed from the computer.

      To install the diskette drive to the external diskette drive case, see "Using the External-Diskette-Drive Case".

    4. If the front bezel shown in the following figure is attached at the front of the computer, remove it from the inside of the computer.

      1. Slide the lever * Figure n1 not displayed. on the bezel to the right as shown. (* Figure c79chc1 not displayed.)

      2. Pull the upper portion of the bezel (* Figure c79chc2 not displayed.) and remove the bezel (* Figure c79chc3 not displayed.).

    5. Install the CD-ROM drive. Press area * Figure n1 not displayed. until the drive snaps into the connector. Close the keyboard; then reconnect all cables.
