2. INSTALLATION

First make sure that you have uninstalled any previous installations of ZapperÖ Demo.

Note: This demo may have been distributed through various means.á The following directions are for installing the ZapperÖ Demo from the ZapperÖ Demo Game Disc.á If you downloaded this demo, or this demo was distributed on a CD-ROM containing other programs, refer to the installation instructions on the web site or CD-ROM where you obtained this demo.

INSTALLING FROM THE ZapperÖ Demo GAME DISC

With Windows running, insert the game disc into your computerÆs CD-ROM Drive. The Zapper Launcher program should start automatically; click on the Install Zapper button and follow the directions on the screen.

If, after inserting the game disc into your CD-ROM drive, the Zapper Launcher program does not start automatically...

1) Double-click on the MY COMPUTER icon found on your desktop.

2) Double-click on the CD-ROM drive containing the Zapper game disc.á In most cases, this should start the AUTOPLAY program, which will launch the Zapper Launcher program.á If it doesnÆt, continue to the next step.

3) Double-click on ZapperConfig.exe to run the program.

Another way to run the Zapper Launcher program is...

1)    Click on the Windows START button and select Run...

2)    At the prompt type X:\ZapperConfig.exe (replacing "X" with the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive).

Finally, with the Zapper Launcher program running, click the Install Zapper button and follow the on-screen directions.

2a. Uninstalling

Uninstalling ZapperÖ Demo will completely remove all installed components of the game. NOTE: the uninstaller CANNOT remove other programs, such as DirectX 8.1.

From the Zapper Launcher Screen

Insert the game CD and wait for AUTOPLAY to start the Zapper Launcher program. If it does not start, click on the Windows START button, select RUN... and at the prompt, type X:\ZapperConfig.exe (replacing "X" with the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive).

3. The Launcher Program

3a. Video

VIDEO

The VIDEO drop-down menu allows you to specify your video card (if you have more than one installed), or to use a different driver (if your video card has more than one compatible driver installed). We recommend you only change the DRIVER option if you experience graphical problems that cannot be resolved in any other way.

RESOLUTION

Select this option to set your screen resolution for optimum performance. Typically, the lower you set the resolution, the faster the game will run but with a lower graphics quality.á Note that some options in the drop down list may not run at all.á If you experience problems with getting Zapper to start properly, try changing the Resolution setting. 640x480x16 is usually the most reliable choice, whereas 1024x768x32 gives a nice graphical quality.

COMPATIBILITY MODE

Some older video cards are not fully compliant with DirectX 8.1. If you see corrupted graphics while playing Zapper, you should quit the game, return to the game launcher screen, open the VIDEO options menu and click the check box labeled Compatibility Mode.á This will allow ZapperÖ Demo to run in an software emulated mode that results in slightly lower quality but allows you to still play the game.

If you've performed these steps and still see corrupted graphics while playing the game, make sure DirectX 8.1 (or newer) is installed and that you have installed the latest video card drivers for your operating system. You can install DirectX 8.1 from the game's launcher screen. Contact your video card manufacturer for instructions on how to obtain and install the latest drivers for your video card.

3b. Audio

AUDIO

This drop-down menu allows you to specify your sound card (if you have more than one) or a different driver if your sound card has more than one installed.á When you press the Test button, you should hear a sound effect indicating you have made the proper selection.

3c. Controls

The CONTROLS menu allows you to change or review the controls that are currently chosen.á Note that in the game, you will NOT see the actual "letter" of the key to press, but the icon displayed next to it found in the CONTROLS menu. You will find a summary of the default icons in the manual, but if you change this set-up, we recommend that you note your changes on a separate piece of paper for easy reference.

Click the "Default" button in the lower right corner to restore the controls settings to what is described in the manual and below.

7. KNOWN ISSUES

Zapper has been thoroughly tested for stability and compatibility to ensure highest possible quality and performance. Despite this, it is unfortunately impossible to foresee every possible type of problem that can occur.

ABORTED INSTALLATION - If you manually cancelled an installation before it was completed, we STRONGLY recommend that you follow the following procedure:

1) Re-install the game (see section 2b above)

2) Uninstall the game (see section 2a above)

3) Install the game again, according to the manual

If you do NOT follow this procedure, you may experience crashes when trying to save, problems with the music, and/or severe loading times.

GENERAL PROBLEMS - In general, if you encounter any problems, save your game, exit the program and restart your machine. Also please make sure that you have the latest version of driver files for your video and sound card.

VOODOO VIDEO CARDS - If you are using a graphics card with a Voodoo chipset you must select the Compatibility Mode checkbox found on the Zapper Launcher screen.á To do this, run the Zapper Launcher, click 'Video' and select the Compatibility Mode checkbox.

STICKYKEYS - While playing under Windows XP, hitting the [SHIFT] key repeatedly may activate the StickyKeys feature of the operating system.á You can either reassign the function to a different key (from the Zapper Launcher screen), OR disable StickyKeys (consult the Windows XP HELP section for instructions on how to accomplish this).

ALT-TAB (SWITCHING BETWEEN PROGRAMS) û While every effort has been made to make sure ZapperÖ Demo works properly while your computer is also running other programs, we have not been able to test every conceivable combination where ALT-TAB might be used.á For best results, please only use the Windows ALT-TAB function if it is completely necessary.á

CHAT PROGRAMS û We recommend you terminate all chat programs and instant messengers before playing ZapperÖ Demo.á Pop-up windows from these programs may interrupt the game and result in undesirable performance of the game program.

POP-UP WINDOWS - We recommend you terminate all programs that may produce a pop-up window (such as your email program) before playing ZapperÖ Demo.á Pop-up windows from these programs may interrupt the game and result in undesirable performance of the game program.

While we have thoroughly tested and attempted to assure this game program will function properly under as many hardware/software configurations as possible, in some rare situations, a small handful of video cards may produce unexpected results. We have identified the following video cards that may fall into this category:

ATI Radeon 8500 - This video card may cause graphics to appear slightly distorted especially while running under Windows 98. This should not affect game play. For best results, operate this game program at a lower resolution.

Matrox Parhelia - When running this game program on a computer with the Parhelia card installed, you may experience moments of instability or slow frame rate, especially if you are running the game in higher resolutions. Try playing this game in a lower resolution.

7a. Troubleshooting

Make sure your computer system is free of computer viruses or other similar programs.

1. PROBLEM: The game runs at a "sluggish" pace.

POSSIBLE REASON: The specifications of your processor and/or graphics card may not meet the minimum required specification to ensure satisfactory performance.

TRY ONE OR MORE OF THESE STEPS:

-          On the Zapper Launcher, click 'Video' and change the Screen Resolution to 640 x 480 x 16.

-          On the Zapper Launcher, select 'Video' and make sure High Detail is NOT checked.

-          On the Zapper Launcher, click VIDEO and activate Compatibility Mode.

2. PROBLEM: The game is not very smooth.

POSSIBLE REASON: If your computer has a low amount of memory you may experience "disk-thrashing" where your hard disk light flickers frequently.

TRY ONE OR MORE OF THESE STEPS:

-          Close any active Internet connections and applications.

-          Exit all other active applications.

-          Defragment your hard drive.

-          Freeing up space on your hard drive.

-          Restart your machine.

3. PROBLEM: I have no sound in Zapper, but I do have it in other applications so there's nothing wrong with my computer!

POSSIBLE REASON: Some video and sound card combinations can occasionally cause problems.

TRY ONE OR MORE OF THESE STEPS:

-          Ensure you have the latest drivers for both your sound card and your video card. Visit the manufacturers web site to download the latest drivers (see section 7c below).

-          Your sound card may be busy with another application; exit all other programs and, if this doesn't help, restart your computer.

-          Try changing your sound or video card in the Launcher Screen.

4. PROBLEM: I cannot uninstall Zapper because it says it is missing files!

POSSIBLE REASON: Some files may have been manually deleted, which prevents the uninstall function to work properly.

TRY ONE OR MORE OF THESE STEPS:

-          Re-Install the game (see 2b above), then uninstall it.

-         Choose REPAIR from the ADD/REMOVE Control Panel.

5. PROBLEM: I cannot get the game to work with my 3D card.

POSSIBLE REASON: You may not have the latest video drivers.

TRY ONE OR MORE OF THESE STEPS:

-          Ensure you have the latest drivers for both your sound card and your video card. Visit the manufactureÆs web site to download the latest drivers (see section 7c below).

-          Ensure you have DirectX 8.1 or above installed on your machine. You can install it from the Zapper game disk using the Install DirectX 8.1 button on the Launcher screen. You can also obtain the latest version from www.microsoft.com/DirectX

-          If you are using a graphics card with a Voodoo chipset you must select the compatibility mode. To do this from the Zapper Launcher, click 'Video' and tick the compatibility mode box.

-          Your video card may not have enough memory or in some other way may not meet the minimum specifications required to run this game program. Make sure the video card has a built-in 3D chip set and has the minimum amount of memory.

6. PROBLEM: the Installation program "freezes" before the installation is complete!

POSSIBLE REASONS: Your hard drive is full, an interfering application is running, your hard drive is damaged, or the CD is dirty or damaged.

TRY ONE OR MORE OF THESE STEPS:

-          Make sure that you have at least 415Mb free space on the destination drive.

-          DonÆt try to install over a network.

-          Always exit all other applications before starting the installation program! Some applications that run in the background (like chat programs or anti-virus programs) can also potentially cause problems.

-          Make sure you have at least 20Mb free space on your C-drive, as the Installation program needs to use this space for temporary files while installing the game.

-          Defragment your hard drive.á

-          If your computer is sharing drives over a network, consider disabling file sharing first on the drive where you are installing the game or make sure that no one else is accessing your hard drive at the same time.

-          Gently wipe off the bottom of the CD with a clean, dry cloth. Be very careful not to scratch the surface of the disk!

-          Carefully inspect your CD for scratches or deformations.

-          Consider using a CD-ROM drive lens-cleaning disc that can be found at most game retailers.

THEN RE-INSTALL THE GAME AS DESCRIBED IN SECTION 2B ABOVE.

7. PROBLEM: The game just crashes out to Windows for no apparent reason!

POSSIBLE REASONS: Conflicting programs or system drivers.á Overheating computer system.á Outdated, incorrect or conflicting drivers for your sound card, video card or even mouse.á IRQ conflicts.á Unusual memory configuration. Overheating memory.áá Not enough room for a Windows swap file.á Overheating hard drive.

TRY ONE OR MORE OF THESE STEPS:

-          Restart your computer and try again.

-          Make sure the ventilation holes on your computer are not blocked.

-          Make sure the fan on the CPU chip and any other fan inside your computer is working.

-          Make sure you have updated the Windows Operating System by using the Windows Update shortcut found in the START menu.

-          Re-Install the game.

-          Right-click on 'My Computer' > Properties > Performance > Graphics. There are four different settings here for your 'Hardware Acceleration'. Try all four of these, decreasing or increasing by one step at a time.

-          If all the other programs are running correctly and ZapperÖ Demo is still not working correctly, contact Infogrames Customer Support (as outlined below under Technical Support).

8. PROBLEM: The game just freezes for no apparent reason!

POSSIBLE REASONS: Other programs are running that are waiting for your input.á Multiple key presses may have triggered another program or have paused the game.á You may have hit the WINDOWS key, or ALT ESC.

TRY ONE OR MORE OF THESE STEPS:

-          Hit ESC a number of times and see if it resumes. Otherwise, see the possible solutions described under problem (7).

-          Manually quit the program and restart the computer.

-          Hold CTRL, ALT, DELETE to reveal the Windows Task Manager, highlight Zapper and click the END TASK button, then restart your computer.

9. PROBLEM: I cannot install Zapper.

POSSIBLE REASON: You are running Windows 3.1, Windows NT or Windows 95. You must have Windows 98, ME, 2000 or XP installed on your PC for Zapper to function correctly. You may not have enough disc space.

7b. Error Messages

MESSAGE: "Unable to start the game..."

REASON: If you get this message it means that there was a problem with setting up the graphics for the game.

TRY ONE OR MORE OF THESE STEPS:

- Ensure you have installed DirectX 8.1 successfully from the CD.

- Ensure you don't have any other programs running that may be preventing it from running (such as other games).

- Make sure you have the latest drivers (see section 7c below).

- Restart your machine and try again.

- Try different settings for the games resolutions and video options.

- Adjust your display color settings (right-click on desktop > Properties > Settings), to "True Color (16 bit)" and the screen area to "640x480" and try again.

- Check the troubleshooting section and any other sections that may be relevant in this document.

- Reinstall the game and try again.

MESSAGE: "Unable to start Zapper."

REASON: The computer was unable to find the game on the disk.

TRY ONE OR MORE OF THESE STEPS:

- Ensure the Zapper CD is free of scratches and dirt, and is in your computer's CD drive.

MESSAGE: "Unable to start the audio..."

REASON: This message means that the game was unable to begin using the soundcard on your machine.

TRY ONE OR MORE OF THESE:

- Ensure you have a windows compatible soundcard installed and working correctly on your machine.

- Ensure you don't have any other applications that require sound for their main functionality (such as games or MP3 players).

- Restart your machine and try again.

- You can still play the game without a working sound card.
