-------------------- HISTORY OF THE WORLD version 1.02 update -------------------- The following changes have been made for version 1.02: - The advisor has been reworked. - After playing some events (notably, Disaster, Plague, Black Death), selecting "Choose it" from the Advisor box no longer applies the event to the recommendation IN ADDITION to areas already selected. - Problems with the "Empire Fortify" event card have been corrected. - Problems with retreating armies have been fixed. - Bugs in the Allies event have been corrected. - Numerous other minor bug fixes. Be sure you've extracted these two patch files (HOTW.EXE and README.TXT) into your HOTW directory (usually C:\HOTW), overwriting the older files. Please note that saved games from version 1.0 are NOT compatible with save games from version 1.02. This also means that PBEM games will have problems if not all the players are using the same version. We recommend restarting any PBEM or savegames with all players using this newer version. -------------------------------------------- Thank you for purchasing History of the World! This file contains late breaking news and information about the game. In general, please refer to the manual for information on playing the game. Some additional information is also available in the Help file (hotw.hlp). If you're not familiar with the Avalon Hill Board game, we recommend using the Tutorial feature of the program. Click on Help|Tutorial to start. You may cancel the Tutorial by clicking on any Cancel button displayed during the Tutorial. You can improve the performance of History of the World by running your computer in 256 color mode. Running Windows in higher color modes requires more memory. (Adding memory will also help the performance of History of the World). We also recommend playing in 800x600 resolution. Lower resolutions (640x480) will result in the Strategic Map overlapping the main map. You may close the Strategic Map or resize it to see both maps at any time during your turn. If you experience memory problems in Windows 3.1, increase the size of the permanent swap file to 16 MBytes or greater. Remember that Windows 3.1, unlike Windows 95, does not manage swap space automatically. You MUST have the CD-ROM in your drive to play History of the World. However, once you start the game, you may replace the CD with a music CD of your choice, and conquer the world to your favorite tunes. If you have another application that plays audio CDs, you will be prompted to exit that application to allow History of the World to control your CD Player. History of the World sets the volume of its sound effects to try and obtain balance with the CD audio track. You can control the sound effects volume from the command line -add -WAVE1 for very quiet sound effects, and -WAVE8 to wake the neighbors - adjust to your taste with numbers from 2 through 6. The default level is equivalent to -WAVE5. Whenever a new empire starts, a flashing marker is displayed in the start land. If you're not a big fan of flashing markers, you can add -NOFLASH to the command line of the application. Look in Windows help for an example of how to specify command line options for a Windows program. Remember, right-clicking on the map brings up a menu which allows you to see a full description of the contents of the land, sea or ocean that you are pointing at. To select lands for event play or monument placement, left-click on the land. When the game completes, the winner may be added to the high scores list - the score values are based on the victory points earned as follows: Take the winner's victory points. Add the absolute value of the difference between this score and each of the other player's victory points. This is the base score. Then, add 10% of the base score for each AI player at Level 3 and subtract 10% for each player at Level 1. If you are running Windows '95 or Windows NT 4.0, and the game covers up your taskbar, just resize the tactical map window to use the portion of the screen you want while the game is in progress. History of the World will retain your choice of the window size and position. You can also use the taskbar's AutoHide setting, which gives you maximum screen real-estate while allowing you to get to your other Windows '95 apps. To enable AutoHide, right-click on any empty part of your taskbar. Select Properties. Now you'll see the option to enable AutoHide. For Windows 95 users, we've included the Avalon Hill Compendium on the CD, which includes a full array of demos, screenshots, updates, and movies for the latest Avalon Hill games. To access the Compendium, double click on AHC.EXE (or AHC with the icon of a CD) from your CD-ROM drive in the Windows Explorer. The Avalon Hill Compendium is NOT compatible with Windows 3.1 or DOS.. If you do find an error while playing History of the World, please have the following information available: 1. Description of your computer 2. Description of your Operating System 3. Description of the problem - include whether a human or computer player was currently playing, what events were in play. 4. A copy of your hotw.ini file 5. If the problem is repeatable, and/or you have a saved game from just before the problem occurs, that would be a great help.
