War Wind Version 1.2 for DirectX 3.0 and KALI January 10, 1997 This is an upgraded executable for War Wind to run faster and provide better multi-player games over LANs and over the internet as well. As of release, this version of War Wind ran successfully on KALI 95, and with the German and English translations of the game. To play this version of War Wind, you need to have installed DirectX 3.0 onto your hard drive. ***NOTE*** ALL PLAYERS PLAYING NETWORK, MODEM, or KALI GAMES MUST USE THE SAME VERSION OF WAR WIND. Upgrading DirectX 2 to DirectX 3.0 (2.0 MB) ---------------------------------- Use this version of DirectX if you already have DirectX audio and video drivers on your PC and wish to upgrade to DirectX3. Installing DirectX 3.0 (6.5 MB) ----------------------- To install DirectX 3.0, create a temporary directory, download this file into it and unzip it. If you are using WINZIP from WINDOWS95, make sure you have the "use folder names" option set on. If you are using PKUNZIP from DOS, use the -d option. In this temporary directory you will then find a DIRECTX directory and inside that you will find a file called DXSETUP.EXE. Run that program to perform the install. You may then delete the whole temporary directory and its contents. Installing KALI (1.81 MB) --------------- The beta version of KALI 95, can be found at the following sites: ftp://ftp.axxis.com/pub/kali/beta/k95_11g.exe ftp://ftp.kali.net/pub/kali/beta/k95_11g.exe ftp://ftp.internexus.net/pub/kali/beta/k95_11g.exe ftp://ftp.pball.com/pub/kali/beta/k95_11g.exe _________________________ Playing War Wind on KALI ------------------------- One of the benefits of using this version is that War Wind can be played using KALI for Windows 95. When Playing War Wind on KALI, here are a few tips: 1. Make sure all computers are disconnected from Internal Networks. Leaving the machines connected to a LAN may cause synch problems. 2. Shut down unecessary programs running in the Win95 background. You can do this by pressing CTRL-ALT-Delete, and then selecting which programs you want to close. 3. Having the host player set up his machine as a Server is reccommended. This allows more players to play at a faster rate. To do this, start KALI, and have 1 player click on the "Server Mode". That player must then let the other players know his IP number and port number. All other players must then go to "Servers" and "Connect to Address." Below are the reccommended number of players for using a host server. More players may result in slower game performance. Host Machine Can Support --------------------------- Pentium 60 2 players and 2 Computer players Pentium 75 2-3 players with up to 3 Computer players Pentuim 90 4 players with up to 4 Computer players Pentium 120 5 players with up to 3 Computer players 4. If playing in a KALI Arena, choose the server with the lowest ping number. The lower the ping, the lower the latency. 5. Don't assign players to player slots until all player names appear and can be added. 6. When starting the game, if the host player doesn't place himself as a player, the game may crash. 7. If someone is dropped out of the game early, it is reccommended that all players restart KALI and then meet in the chat room. 8. We do not reccommend using the Network sceanarios "Trench Warfare" or "Get to Work you Maggots" over KALI. KALI and Internet Service Providers ----------------------------------- Extensive playtesting has shown that some internet service providers do not fully support KALI. If you are having problems seeing War Wind Games through KALI, please check with your internet service provider. A common problem can be when a host begins to assign players to a game, the other players will be unable to see the game created. This is due to your internet service provider not fully supporting KALI. We recommend having all players (including the host) quit out of KALI and start over. Modem ----- If you cancel a dial up when trying to connect to a game, and then attempt to dial again, an error will occur and no further calls can be made unless you quit the game and restart. Additional Information/Errata ----------------------------- In the Online Tutorial, under the category "landmines," the Vision Quest does not allow players to view mines. The Mind Shield spell now works correctly. Before, enemy units were still remaining visible to the enemy.
