Demo Instructions Welcome to the world of Azrael's Tear! Azrael's Tear is a first-person, real-time 3D adventure role playing game, featuring complex interaction and dialogue with other characters, high-tension combat, and a host of puzzles to solve. Set in a vast underground temple called Aeternis, peopled by the mythical Templar knights, obsessive, desperate ghosts, and mutated dinosaurs all kept alive by the mystic powers of the Holy Grail. You will assume the role of a futuristic thief equipped with high-tech mapping and sensor gear arranged on a sophisticated "heads-up" display. Your task is to untangle the temple's mysteries, thereby gaining the knowledge and gathering the tools that will take you to the Holy Grail -- perhaps to return with it to the outer world. Along the way, you must take pains to plan out both your seizure of the Grail and your intended escape route. This demo will provide you with a taste of things to come: a few of the many rooms you'll explore in the final game. We Welcome Your Feedback! If you have any comments about this demo, please send e-mail to azrael@mindscape.com and let us hear about it! We're sorry, but no technical support will be provided through this automated account and we regret that we will be unable to respond to your comments personally. Rest assured, though, that your comments will be passed along to the development team. For technical support information, see the section entitled "Technical Support" at the end of this document. System Requirements The Azrael's Tear interactive demo requires a 486DX/2 66MHz or better processor, 8MB or more RAM, and a Microsoft- compatible mouse. A Pentium processor is recommended. A Sound Blaster-compatible sound card is also recommended. NOTE: These requirements may vary from those of the final game. System Configuration This demo requires that a valid mouse driver and VESA video driver be loaded in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. Consult your computer's operating manual for more information. Controls Azrael's Tear is experienced from within the confines of your state-of-the-art head-mounted display. Along the right side, you will see helpful hints -- tips that can assist in overcoming obstacles, or warn you of oncoming danger. Hold the right mouse button down while moving the mouse to look around your environment. If you hold down the left mouse button at the same time you will move in the direction you are facing. You can also use the cursor keys to move backwards and forwards. The Left and Right Arrow keys turn you left and right. If you hold the Shift key down while walking you will run. On the HUD, the top left button is used for scanning objects (this is only needed if an object can be actioned, otherwise you automatically scan when you put the cursor over something), and the button below this is used for the map and the right hand button brings up the load save box and is used to adjust the volume. Pressing the M key toggles between the map screen and the external view. The box on the left is used to list any objects you are carrying and the arrow keys are used to scroll up and down through them. Pressing the space bar toggles you between combat mode and normal mode. While in combat mode a target will appear on the screen. Pushing the cursor off the side of the screen causes you to turn, you do not need to hold the right mouse button down. Left clicking shoots at a target. You can still move in combat mode but only with the arrow keys. The resolution can be altered by using the keys 1 to 4. 1 puts you in the top resolution but you move at the slowest speed. 3 is the lowest resolution and the fastest speed. 4 is used to auto select, when you are moving it is at resolution 2 and when stationary at resolution 1. If you press 5 the hud text and wireframes disappear after a short time, but will reappear when updated. During conversation the up and down cursor keys move you through the conversation options and the press return when you have selected your response. You can also use the mouse to select a conversation option. You can only get out of a conversation by hitting the end conversation response or one of the obvious 'goodbye' responses. Starting point You start in the entry corridor. There are two Eugenes (small dinosaurs) runnng around, a parchment to look at, a tapestry piece and some tongs. A locked door and an unlocked door are your only exits. Good luck! Skip over this section if you don't want to know how to solve the puzzles in this demo! You have been warned! * Starting Point You start in the entry corridor. There are two Eugenes (small dinosaurs) runnng around, a parchment to look at, a tapestry piece and some tongs. You need the tongs to get the key in the Well Room, and the key to open the locked door here. * Well Room When you enter here and approach the well Niamh's ghost will greet you. The most successful path through the conversation is to be honest and say that you're not Oisin. Pointing out that she's dead has a predictably distressing effect on her. Use the tongs to get the well key. The switchboard device on the wall needs reconfiguring to the arrangement shown on the plaque in the Baptistery. That is, use the right-most lever to pull the right pipe out, the lower right wheel to rotate it, and the lever again to put it back into the new hole. This will drain the bath in the Baptistery and expose the lens. You will hear water running sound effect when you solve the puzzle. * Baptistery Puzzle There are stairs at the back of the Baptistery that lead up to some loose pieces of tapestry and one piece hanging up. The piece hanging up can be rotated to reveal a message. The other pieces must be placed in the empty slots next to the one hanging up. There are four slots and only three tapestry pieces in the room -- the fourth piece is in the entry corridor. This message tells you that the bath with murky water contains an item. There are two baths in the room. One has murky water and one has clear water. Above the murky water is a plaque with symbols that show you how to solve the well room puzzle which drains the bath. To solve the puzzle you must go to the well room and adjust the pipe settings in the puzzle there. Once the bath in the Baptistry has drained you will see a lens lying on the bottom. This lens must be placed on the stone bible. When you stand on the pad in front of the font and action the lens you will see an animation and a secret door will open to your left with a shield. This shield is used in a later puzzle in the full version of the game but for now it ends the playable section of the demo.
