Hardware
* The Complete PC Upgrade and Maintenance Guide by Mark Minasi ($85, Sybex, 1996) is a great source for the motivated beginner or intermediate user who wants to know more about PC subsystems and making repairs and upgrades.

* Troubleshooting Your PC by Jim Aspinwall and Mike Todd ($65, MIS Press, 1996) lists symptoms and causes of common hardware problems, as well as solutions. It also has basic explanations of hardware systems, cabling diagrams, and a list of DOS error messages. The third edition is weak on Windows 95.

* Upgrading and Repairing PCs by Scott Mueller ($79.95, QUE, 1996) is well suited to the experienced PC enthusiast looking for deeper background or upgrade tips.

* The Winn L. Rosch Hardware Bible by (yes, you guessed it!) Winn L. Rosch ($99.95, SAMS, 1997) is an excellent reference for anyone wishing to learn the nuts and bolts of PC technology. The latest version -- the Premier Edition -- is up-to-date and comprehensive and comes with a CD-ROM.

Windows 95

* The Mother of All Windows 95 Books by Woody Leonhard and Barry Simon ($89.95, Addison-Wesley, 1996) provides humorous and sometimes unorthodox tidbits about Windows 95. You'll find lots of attitude, good explanations, and multiple non-Microsoft perspectives.

* Microsoft Windows 95 Resource Kit ($99.95, Microsoft Press, 1995) is the official party line on Windows 95. Much of the book is available for free on your Windows 95 CD-ROM in the Admin/Reskit/Helpfile folder.

* The Windows 95 and NT 4.0 Registry and Customization Handbook by Jerry Honeycutt ($99.95, QUE, 1997) contains just about everything you could possibly want to know about the arcane workings of the Windows registry. It's intended for advanced users.

* Windows 95 for Dummies -- 3rd Edition by Andy Rathbone ($39.95, IDG Books, 1997). Despite the title (or perhaps because of the title), this volume sells by the truckload at a price less gouging than the norm. Its clear, extremely simple prose is designed to acquaint novice users with the basic functions of Windows 95
