Password amnesia

Under Dial-up Networking Windows 95 will no longer save my password for connections even when the Save password checkbox is ticked -- a bug in Windows 95 or something I am overlooking?

There are four reasons why this might occur:
1. Password caching is disabled. To verify this, check to see if the following registry key is present: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Network\DisablePwdCaching. If it is, and it has the value of 1, then password caching has been disabled. Either delete this key or change the value to 0.
2. One of the files associated with Dial-up Networking may be damaged. You will need to remove Dial-up Networking and then reinstall it. Go to the Add/Remove Programs applet in Control Panel and click on the Windows Setup tab. Uncheck the Dial-up Networking box which is part of the Communications component of Windows 95. Restart your computer. Go back and re-check the Dial-up Networking box to reinstall it.
3. Your password list file may be damaged. This is located in your Windows directory with the name <username>.pwl. Rename or delete this file. Restart your computer. Windows will create a new password file for that username.
4. The rna.pwl file, if it is present, may be damaged. Some configurations require this file. It is located in your Windows directory. Rename or delete it and restart your computer. Windows will create a new rna.pwl file.
Note. Try each of these solutions in turn before proceeding to the next one.
