There's a slight problem with the way Word 98 for Mac OS saves its files. If a Word file occupies a sector on your hard drive that used to belong to a file which has been deleted, bits of that deleted file can show up in the Word document.
These aren't visible when you open the document up in Word 98 or Word 97 for Windows, but if you e-mail the file to a friend who has to import the text into their word processor, they will see the junk data. Usually it's just unreadable garbage, but every so often a bit of text ù your address book, confidential budget reports, love letters to your secretary ù could show up and embarrass you. Microsoft has posted an update for Word 98 that fixes this specific problem on its Web site. Go to www.microsoft.com/macoffice/users/freedl.htm There's also an updater for users of Mac OS 8.5 posted on the site.
