Indent a block of text

Not all quotations are sound bites - often, they run for several paragraphs. When they do, it's common practice to indent both sides of the block. Here's a guide to handling the job in the three major word processing programs.

Word 6 and later:

1. Select the paragraphs you want to indent.

2. Right-click the selection and select Paragraph. Click the Indents and Spacing tab if it's not already selected.

3. In the Indentation section of the Paragraph dialogue box, type the number of units (centimetres or inches) you want the paragraphs indented in the Left and Right fields, or click the Up and Down arrows in each field.

4. Click OK.

WordPerfect 6.1 and later: WordPerfect offers a quick way to indent both sides of text paragraphs.

1. In Versions 7 and 8, select the paragraphs you want to indent. In Version 6.1, do not select the paragraphs. Instead, place the cursor at the beginning of each paragraph in turn before giving the command below.

2. Select Format-Paragraph-Double Indent, or press <Ctrl>-<Shift>-<F7>. This indents both sides of the paragraphs to the first tab setting. (Hint: Repeat Step 2 to increase the amount of indentation.)

Word Pro (all versions): The Text InfoBox gives you a fast way to indent both sides of a paragraph.

1. Select the text you want to indent.

2. If the Text InfoBox is not visible, press <Alt>-<Enter> to display it.

3. Click the Alignment tab in the InfoBox.

4. Click the double indentation button in the Indent section of the InfoBox.

5. If necessary, adjust the level of the desired indentation in the InfoBox's Indent from margin field.
