Norton Utilities for Win95 reports too much drive space

Q Why is Norton Utilities reporting more hard drive space than there physically is?

A For a more accurate reading, do the following: open the Norton Recycled bin. Choose Empty Norton Protected files.

Tip: Creating Document Scraps with Word 7.0 for Windows 95

T If you are using Microsoft Word 7.0, you can highlight a section of the document then drag and drop the highlighted area to your desktop. Windows will create a file for you with a name like Document Scrap From... followed by the first few words you selected.

Patch for Excel 7.0 for Windows 95

Q I heard that there is a patch for Excel 7 which fixes a few bugs. Where can I get hold of this patch?

A Contact Microsoft or get the patch on-line on The Microsoft Network in the Excel Forum (GO MSEXCEL), or on CompuServe in the Excel Forum (GO MSEXCEL) and on the Internet at http://www.microsoft.com/msexcel/FreeStuff/MSTools/xl95err/xl95err.htm

Backing up the Windows 95 registry

Q I'm about to make changes to the Windows 95 registry manually. What is the best and quickest way to make a backup (and restoration, if need be) of the registry?

A Use the Configuration Backup Tool CFGBACK.EXE on the Win95 CD. It is in the /OTHER/MISC/CFGBACK directory.

Changing modem initialisation string in Win95

Q How do I change the Initialization String for my modem?

A Make the following changes to the registry:

1. Start REGEDIT

2. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ System \ CurrentControlSet \ Services \ Class \ Modem \ 0000 \ Init

3. Change the settings to the values for your modem

Extracting a file from the Win95 cabinet files

Q I need to extract a certain file from one of the Win95 CAB files but I don't know the particular CAB file that it's in. How can I find it?

A The following batch file can be used from the DOS command line:

for %p in (x:\win95\*.cab) do extract %p filename

Where x:\win95 is the drive and path where your Win95 files are located and filename is the name of the file you want to extract. This will extract the file to your current directory. If you want to save this as a batch file, replace %p with %%p

Win95 can't find CD-ROM drive

Q When I try to access my CD-ROM drive in Windows 95, I get the error message Device not found. What does this mean?

A This problem can occur if you are using an older version of MSCDEX.EXE that is not compatible with Windows 95. You may also experience the following problems:

You cannot run executable (.exe) files.

You cannot view complete directory listings.

When you install certain real-mode CD-ROM drivers, an older version of MSCDEX.EXE is copied to the hard disk and a reference to the older version of MSCDEX.EXE is placed in the Autoexec.bat file. To fix this, modify the line containing MSCDEX.EXE to read

<drive>:\windows\command\mscdex.exe <parameters>

where <drive> is the drive containing Windows 95 and <parameters> are the parameters from the original line containing MSCDEX.EXE.

What IRQs are free in Win95?

Q How can I find out which IRQ's are available on my machine?

A Do the following: Right-click on My Computer, choose Properties, select the Device Manager tab, and double-click on Computer.

This will show which IRQs are currently in use.

MS Mail: Who owns shared folders?

Q How do I find out who owns a shared folder in MS Mail?

A The MS Mail Administrator needs to run MS Mail - Admin-Local Admin-Folders. From here you can print a text file containing a listing of all shared and group folders, the folder name, who created the folder and the permissions on the folder.

Upside down text in Microsoft Word 6

You can do this in Microsoft Word 6 if you have Microsoft WordArt installed. Highlight the text you wish to invert and cut it to the clipboard (use <Ctrl>+X). Then choose Insert-Object. Select Microsoft WordArt 2.0. A dialogue box appears with the prompt enter your text here. Paste the cut text in (using <Ctrl>+V).

Now choose Format-Rotation & effects, and type 180 into the rotation field. Press <Enter>, then press <Esc>

If you wish to modify the upside-down text, double-click it. This will take you back to the WordArt tool.

Type 1 fonts in Corel Draw 6.0

Q Why can't I load/view my Type 1 fonts in DRAW 6.0 or in Windows`95's Control Panel?

A Windows 95 requires ATM 3.01 or later. ATM 3.01 or 3.02 must be setup on your system before Type 1 fonts can be loaded/viewed.
