Stop files from opening automatically

Q My Gateway P5-166 has a bug that loads many Excel files whenever I start the program. The PC, which is running Office 97 and Windows 95, is attached to a company NT 4.0 server, but I had the same problem on a Novell network. I've tried everything, including network experts' advice, but the problem remains. Excel loads so many files, it finally runs out of memory.

A This problem has nothing to do with your PC or your network. When Excel starts, it automatically opens all files in the \xlstart directory. Check \xlstart, and remove any files that shouldn't be there. Excel may also be opening files from an alternate start-up location. Start Excel and choose ToolsûOptions, click the General tab, and check the Alternate start-up file location field. Delete any directory listed there.
