More fax about fax formats

Being a subscriber and avid reader of The Help Screen in Australian PC World, I often share an interest in other readers' questions and use the helpful advice you give.
In the February 1997 issue (Fax you very much, p162) there is an answer to a dilemma that I have often been faced with: that of faxing back a reply to a fax that I have received when you don't have a scanner and suitable OCR software.
I use Bitware software which stores the faxes that I receive in a subdirectory called Bitware\Fax, in a file format with a BFX extension. Unfortunately these files can't be read by Paintbrush as they are not in the BMP format.
Is there another way of editing these files so I can add text or graphics to them before faxing them back to the sender? Or can I convert the file format to BMP?

The version of BitFax that I examined (BitFax Professional for Windows Version 3.0) saves faxes in a proprietary BFX format, probably because this format is capable of supporting images of two or more pages. Fortunately, this needn't be a limitation because BitFax allows you convert fax images to formats that popular graphics programs can understand.
With your fax document displayed on screen, choose File--Save Asand then select BMP in the File format field. Now you can edit the resulting BMP file in Paintbrush and fax back your reply.

BitFax can save fax images in a number of formats, including BMP
