What to do with old PCs

Tip
In reply to your column in June's edition, I am a firm believer in recycling. Don't throw away that old XT or 286. You can simply upgrade what you currently have. I'll give you an example of how much it costs.
We'll presume at this stage you have a VGA monitor with card, and if you don't, you can usually pick up a second-hand one for up to $200. Colour cards now cost about $70. Next, you keep the case, power supply, floppy drives and any 1Mb SIMM chips. Throw the rest away.
Motherboards with a CPU will cost between $50 to $140, depending on whether you buy a 386 or 486. Controller cards cost $45 or more second-hand. Most of these parts you can get readily out of the Trading Post. Next, take all the components to your PC shop, and for approximately $50 labour you will get back an up-to-date PC. So, as you can see, you don't have to throw away that old PC -- just upgrade it!
