One of the most irritating things about working with floppy disks is the inordinate amount of time they can take for their icons to appear on the desktop. This especially happens with disks which have been used and overwritten often, and can also happen with Zip cartridges. The solution is simply to rebuild the desktop on the affected media. As soon as you insert the disk, hold down the Command and Option keys, then select OK when the dialogue appears. The difference can be amazing.
