Under Mac OS 7.x or lower, avoid using virtual memory wherever possible. The reduced speed and stability of the system cancel out any benefits, and RAM isnÆt all that expensive these days.

Under Mac OS 8.x, use virtual memory if you can. Your applications actually require less RAM if youÆre running VM and they will launch faster. Some applications, such as Adobe Premiere, donÆt like VM very much, but they are in the minority.

Under Mac OS 8.5, using virtual memory will drastically reduce the memory requirements of your System and allow more room to run applications.
