What are Snippets?
Snippets is the term used to describe the information items you save and organize using the Net Snippets software. In most cases Snippets are actually HTML files you save from the Internet. By using Net Snippets unique ability to select and save a portion of any web page, you can create your personal collection of Snippets (or HTML pages in other words).

But Net Snippets is not limited to HTML. You can also save other file types from the Internet (PDF Files, Doc files, multimedia files and more). Within the Net Snippets software, these other files types are referred to as Snippets as well. For each Snippet (whether it's in HTML format or another format), you can fill in fields like comments, keywords, importance level and more.

Now that you understand what Snippets are, please read the 'Adding New Snippets' section to see how it's all done.

Adding New Snippets

Adding a new Snippet
There are a several ways you can add a new Snippet. Which one to use depends on what you want to save and your personal preferences. Below is an overview of each method.

  • Drag & Drop in Internet Explorer - Net Snippets supports drag & drop allowing you to save information you find on a web page, within seconds. All you have to do is select a block of text or images on the web page you are currently viewing, and drag that block to the 'Net Snippets' explorer bar (You can drag the selected block to the actual folder you want the Snippet to be saved in or to an existing Snippet).

Using drag & drop you can also save individual images and links.

  • Internet Explorer's Popup Menu - Frequently you will surf the Web without opening the Net Snippets explorer bar. If you find something you wish to keep and don't want to open the Net Snippets explorer bar, Internet Explorer's popup menu is a good choice.

Simply click the right button of your mouse over the selected block of text (or images).  A popup menu will show up containing an 'Add to Net Snippets' menu item.

You can also use this method to save individual images, links and even an entire web page. Right click the entity you wish to save (page, link, image etc.) and select 'Add to Net Snippets' from the popup menu.

  • Net Snippets Add Menu - Clicking the 'Add' menu in the Net Snippets explorer bar will show a drop down menu containing the 'Add Selection' menu item. Selecting 'Add Selection' from this menu will add a new Snippet based on the current Internet Explorer selection.
  • Net Snippets Toolbar - The Net Snippets Toolbar is not displayed by default after installing Net Snippets. To add the Net Snippets Toolbar to Internet Explorer, please follow the instruction in the 'Adding the Net Snippets Toolbar to Internet Explorer' section.

Clicking the 'Add Selection' button in the Net Snippets toolbar, will add a new Snippet based on the current Internet Explorer selection.

  • Drag & Drop to Net Snippet's Drop Spot - Net Snippets allows you to save information from Internet Explorer as well as other Windows programs that support drag & drop. The easiest way to capture information from other programs (e.g.: MS Word, Outlook), is to use Net Snippets Drop SpotTM feature. To learn more about this unique feature, please read 'Using Net Snippet's Drop Spot feature'.
Editing a Snippet before it is saved
After adding a new Snippet, a 'Snippet Editor' will open up. The editor allows you to annotate the Snippet before saving it. Below is a list of some of the editing tools you'll find in the Snippet Editor:
  • Edit the actual text contained within the Snippet.
  • Add your own text to the Snippet.
  • Format the text (highlight, bold, underline etc.)
  • Paste text or images from the Clipboard.
  • Add images and hyperlinks.

In addition to editing the actual Snippet content, you'll be able to edit and specify additional information about the new Snippet. This includes choosing a name for the new Snippet, deciding in which folder to save it etc. For a complete description of this additional information, please read 'Specifying additional information about a Snippet'.

After you finish editing the Snippet, you can save it by clicking the 'Save' button or click 'Cancel' if you decide you don't want it after all. If you decide to save the Snippet, you can always edit it later using the "Organize->Edit" or "Organize->Open With..." menu items or simply by double clicking it.

Specifying additional information about a Snippet
Net Snippets automatically saves additional information about each Snippet. For example the date and time the Snippet was added, is recorded. The URL and Title of the page it was saved from, is recorded as well. In addition, Net Snippets allows you to specify things like importance level, comments etc. Below is a complete list of all the additional information you can specify for each Snippet:
  • Snippet Name (available only when a new Snippet is added)
  • Folder - Specifies to which folder the Snippet will be added (available only when a new Snippet is added).
  • Comments - Allows you to describe the Snippet and add you personal comments.
  • Importance - Allow you to specify how important the Snippet is (There are 3 levels: Low, Medium & High)
  • Source - Contains the list of sources the Snippet was taken from. This includes the URL's (Web addresses or documents that the Snippet was saved from), Titles and other bibliographical information like Author, Access Date etc. All source information is editable and can be easily inserted into the actual Snippet by double clicking a specific source. The different fields can be filled-in by simply typing-in the information or by selecting text from the editor and dragging it into the relevant field.
  • Keywords - Allow you to associate keywords with the Snippet. You can select from a list of pre-defined keywords or type in new keywords. To learn how you can define a list of global keywords, please read the 'Defining Keywords' section.
  • Other Information - Net Snippets allows you to associate custom information with each Snippet. To learn more about this subject, please read the 'Defining Custom Fields' section.

Adding other file types
Net Snippets allows you to save non-HTML content from the Internet. For example you can save a PDF or Word file from the Web and store it in one of the Net Snippets folders. Before a new file is added, you can fill in fields like comments, keywords, importance level and more. This information is identical to the information you fill in when adding an HTML based Snippet. To learn more, please read 'Specifying additional information about a Snippet'.

Saving a PDF file (or any other file type supported by Net Snippets) from the Internet is easy. Simply drag the link to the file from the web page to the Net Snippets Explorer Bar. You can also right click the link and use the Net Snippets pop-up menu.

Net Snippets supports common file types like PDF, Doc, TXT, Zip, AVI, WAV, mp3 and others.

Adding Snippets from other applications (Not Internet Explorer)
In many cases you need to save information not directly found on the Web. This information might be a paragraph from an E-mail you've received or one page out of MS Word document someone sent you.

Net Snippets allows you to add Snippets that contain information originating from other Windows application (other than Internet Explorer). There are three ways to add a Snippet from another Windows program:
  • Drag & Drop to Net Snippet's Drop SpotTM - Simply drag & drop the selected block of text from the source application (e.g.: Outlook Express) to the Net Snippets Drop Spot desk band. By default the Drop Spot desk band is not shown in your Windows task bar. To add Drop Spot to your task bar, please read  'Using Net Snippet's Drop Spot feature'.

Not all Windows application support drag & drop (Notepad for example, doesn't). If the source application does not support drag & drop, please use the Clipboard method described below.

  • Drag & Drop to Internet Explorer - Drag & drop the selected block of text from the source application (e.g.: Outlook Express) to the Net Snippets explorer bar.
  • Clipboard - You can add a Snippet based on the contents of the Windows Clipboard. This is done via the 'Add Clipboard Contents' menu item located under the 'Add' menu. Here is an example of how this would work if you wanted to keep an important sentence out of an E-mail you received:
  1. Select the sentence in the E-mail application (Lets assume Outlook Express) with the mouse or keyboard.
  2. Copy the sentence to the Windows Clipboard using the "Edit->Copy" feature of that application (In many application a toolbar button is provided).
  3. Switch to Internet Explorer and open the 'Net Snippets' explorer bar.
  4. Click the 'Add' menu and select the 'Add Clipboard Contents' menu item.
  5. You should see the 'Add Snippet' window with the text you copied. Now all you need to do is click 'Save' and you're done.
Using Net Snippet's Drop SpotTM feature
The Drop Spot feature allows you to save information from other Windows applications (not just Internet Explorer). By default the Drop Spot desk band is not shown in your Windows task bar. To add Drop Spot to your task bar, follow the steps below.
How to add Net Snippet's Drop SpotTM to your Windows task bar?
  1. Click the right button of your mouse on the Windows task bar (usually at the bottom of your desktop).
  2. From The popup menu select 'Toolbars'.
  3. Select 'Net Snippets Drop Spot' from the 'Toolbars' menu.
  4. You should see a new desk band titled 'Drop Spot' on the right side of your task bar (by the system tray).
  5. You can resize the Drop Spot band or drag it to your desktop, if you prefer a floating window. If you decide to use the floating window, make sure you configure it to stay on top of other windows. To do that, right click the Drop Spot window and select the 'Stay On Top' option.
  6. To close the Drop Spot desk band, right click it and select 'Close'.
Drag text or images to Net Snippet's Drop Spot
Select a block of text (or images) in any Windows application that supports drag & drop and drag it to the Net Snippet's Drop Spot. After dropping the selected content, you'll see the 'Snippet Editor' prompting you to save the new Snippet.

Displaying Snippets from Drop Spot
Double clicking Net Snippet's Drop Spot will open Internet Explorer and show the Net Snippets explorer bar. You can also right click the Drop Spot desk band and select 'Show Snippets' from the popup menu.

Adding personal notes
This feature allows you to start with an empty Snippet and type in the text yourself. It may be useful when you wish to keep a phone number, address or other typically short pieces of information. To add a personal note, select the "Add Empty Snippet" menu item under the 'Add' menu.

Saving an entire web page
This feature allows you to save an entire web page in one Snippet. All images contained in the page along with the text and links are going to be stored on your local computer. To save an entire web page select the "Add Entire Page" menu item under the 'Add' menu. This option is also available from the Net Snippets Toolbar.

One would use this feature only if the entire page is of interest (in a case of an article for example). If you don't need the entire page it is better to select the portion you wish to save and use the 'Add Selection' option.

Saving an individual image
There are several ways you can add a Snippet that contains an image. The different methods are listed below.
  • Click the right button of the mouse over the image and select 'Add To Net Snippets'
  • Drag the image to the Net Snippets explorer bar (to the folder you wish to store it in) without selecting it.
  • Drag the image to the Net Snippets explorer bar (to the folder you wish to store it in) after selecting it with the mouse (possibly with other images or text).
  • Copy the image to the Windows Clipboard (using the 'Copy' menu item provided in the context menu) and then select 'Add Clipboard Contents' from the 'Add' menu in Net Snippets.

Saving all images on a web page
Simply select the 'Grab All Images' menu item located under the 'Add' menu in the Net Snippets explorer bar. This will create a new Snippet with all the images contained in the current web page you are viewing. This option is also available from the Net Snippets Toolbar.

Adding content to an Existing Snippet
Adding content to an existing Snippet using drag & drop
Adding content to an existing Snippet is as easy as adding a new Snippet. You simply drag a block of text or images to an an existing Snippet in the Net Snippets explorer bar. The 'Snippet Editor' will open up displaying the existing snippet's content along with the new content.

The 'References' field located in the 'Source' tab of the 'Snippet Editor', will contain a list of all the URLs the content was taken from.

Adding content to the last Snippet
To quickly add content from several web pages to the same Snippet, it is recommended to use the 'Add To Last' feature of Net Snippets. There are two ways you can add content to the last Snippet you saved:
  • Use the 'Add To Last' button located in the main Net Snippets toolbar. To the right of the 'Add To Last' button there is also a small drop down menu (click the down arrow) which allows you to add content to recently used Snippets.
  • Under the 'Add' menu, located in the Net Snippets explorer bar, there is an option to add to the last Snippet that was saved. This option is only available, after saving at least one Snippet.

Editing Snippets
Editing a Snippet using Net Snippets
Net Snippets provides its own HTML editor (Snippet Editor) which allows you to customize the appearance and contents of a Snippet. This is the same editor that appears when a new HTML Snippet is added.

To read more about the features available by this editor see 'Editing a Snippet before it is saved'. To see how you can edit an HTML Snippet using other HTML editors, please read below.

Editing a Snippet using an HTML Editor
Frequently you'll want some extra control on how a Snippet looks and the information it contains. Although the Net Snippets editor allows you to edit the contents of a Snippet, it is certainly not a full blown HTML editor.

To edit an HTML Snippet with one of the HTML editors installed on your computer (FrontPage, MS Word etc.) select a Snippet and click the 'Open With...' menu item located under the 'Organize' menu. One of the options under the "Open With' menu is the familiar Notepad for those of you who prefer raw HTML.

After editing a Snippet with an HTML editor you will need to refresh the browser in order to see the changes. To refresh simply click the browser's refresh button or click the F5 key on your keyboard.

Organizing Snippets
Creating Folders
Net Snippets supports Folders allowing you to easily categorize the information you manage. Each folder can contain multiple Snippets and multiple sub-folders much like Windows Explorer contains directories and files.

To create a new folder simply select the "Create Folder" menu item located under the 'Organize' menu. You can also right click the Snippet (or Folder) and use a pop-up menu. When adding a new Folder you can specify its importance level and type in a description (Optional). Folder importance is used when sorting Snippets and Folders by importance.

To learn more about sorting see "Sorting Snippets and Folders".

Renaming Snippets and Folders
To rename a Snippet or Folder simply select it and click the 'Rename' menu item located under the 'Organize' menu. You can also right click the Snippet (or Folder) and use a pop-up menu.

Moving Snippets and Folders
There are two ways to manage Snippets and folders:
  • Drag & Drop - Simply drag & drop a folder or a Snippet from one folder to another (Same way you drag & drop a file in Window Explorer)
  • 'Move To' Menu - To move a Snippet or Folder to another folder select it and click the 'Move To...' menu item located under the 'Organize' menu. You can also right click the Snippet (or Folder) and use a pop-up menu. You will be prompted for a destination folder.

Deleting Snippets and Folders
To delete a Snippet or Folder select it and click the 'Delete' menu item located under the 'Organize' menu. You can also right click the Snippet (or Folder) and use a pop-up menu. By default Net Snippets will ask you to confirm when you delete a Folder.

To change the confirmation settings, please visit the 'Options' screen accessible via the 'Tools->Options' menu item.

Creating Bibliography Reports
Creating a Folder Bibliography Report
Net Snippets allows you to create Folder specific bibliography reports. To create a report, select a Folder in the Net Snippets explorer bar and click the 'Create Bibliography' menu item under the 'Organize' menu.

When creating a new bibliography report, you can select between several bibliography styles, customize the appearance of the report (select colors) and specify which information will be included in the report. For example you can specify if fields like Snippet Name, Date & Time or Comments, are going to be included in the final report. When selecting a standard bibliography style like MLA or APA, you will not be able to select which information is included, since this is specified by the actual standard.

You can also specify if sub-folders are included and if a link to the original Snippet is placed in the report.

Creating a Master Bibliography Report
Creating a master bibliography report is much like creating a Folder specific report. The only difference is that the master report includes all of your Snippets and Folders.

To create a master bibliography report, select the 'Create Master Bibliography' menu item, located under the Net Snippets 'Tools' menu.

Merging Snippets
Net Snippets allows you to merge multiple HTML Snippets. To merge multiple Snippets into one HTML document select a folder that contains at least two HTML Snippets and then select the 'Organize->Merge Snippets' menu item.

You can select which Snippets are going to be included in the newly created document and control if the references and title are going to be added to the actual document. After you specify which Snippets to include, a new document is created and you are able to edit it before it is saved.

When Snippets are merged, the newly created document contains all of their referencing URL's, comments, keywords and custom fields.

Searching Snippets
Net Snippets allows you to search for Snippets. To start a new search select the 'Search' menu item located under the Net Snippets 'Tools' menu. You can also click the 'Search' button located in the Net Snippets toolbar. The above methods search the entire Net Snippets tree (all of your snippets). Alternatively you can search a specific folder by selecting it and then selecting the 'Organize->Search' menu item.

When searching for Snippets, you can specify which fields are going to be searched. After a search is completed, you can either view the results without saving them or view results and save them to the 'Search Results' folder.

Saving the search results to the 'Search Results' Folder, allows you to keep the search results for future reference. Since the search results contain links to your local Snippets as well as the original web site the Snippet was taken from, this is an excellent way keep a cross Folder collection of Snippets.

Backing-up Snippets
Net Snippets allows you to easily backup your Snippets. You can backup a single Snippet, a Folder and even the entire Net Snippets library (including all the Snippets and Folders).

There are several reasons for backing-up your Snippets. First, as a precaution you want to regularly backup all your data incase something happens to your computer. Another reason is to be able to transfer the data from one computer to the other. By backing-up Snippets on one computer and restoring them on another, you are able to safely transfer your Snippets between computers.

To help you backup your data, Net Snippets provides a Backup Wizard. The wizard is launched from the 'Organize->Backup' menu item (for a single Snippet or folder) or from the 'Tools->Backup All' menu item if you wish to backup all your Snippets and folders.

When backing-up your Snippets you are asked to make the following choices:

1. In which format to package Snippets - Net Snippets supports 3 formats for packaging Snippets. Below is a description of each format:

- Net Snippets Format: When using the Net Snippets format (also known as .NS), Net Snippets packages the selected Snippets and folders into one archive file that has the .NS extension. This archive file can later be opened using the Net Snippets software by simply double clicking it.

- Zip Format: When using the Zip format,  Net Snippets packages the selected Snippets and folders into one Zip file. The advantage of this format over the .NS format is that it does not require the Net Snippets software for unpacking. To open and view the packaged Snippets, all you need is a Zip complaint software (e.g.: WinZip) and a Web browser to view the Snippets (HTML files).

- Copy Snippets without packaging: This 3rd option allows you to backup your Snippets and folders without any archiving or compression. Net Snippets simply copies the Snippets and folders you selected to your destination media (Floppy, hard drive etc.).

2. Where should the backup file(s) be created - In additional to specifying the backup format, you are asked to specify where the backup file(s) are going to be created. Three options are available: Desktop, Floppy Drive (A:) or any other user-defined folder.

E-mailing Snippets
Net Snippets E-mail Overview
Net Snippets allows you to share your Snippets with your friends, co-workers or anyone else. One way of sharing Snippets is via E-mail. Net Snippets support several methods of sending Snippets by e-mail.

Which method you use, depends on the e-mail software you use, your requirements and the recipient's ability to view Snippets. Net Snippets E-mail features can be accessed through the 'Organize->E-mail' menu. Below is an overview of each method:

E-mailing a Snippet using Outlook Express
This method allows you to send a single Snippet via Outlook Express. The main advantage of this method is that the receipt does not receive any attachments and instead can view the Snippet right inside his/her E-mail software (as HTML mail). In addition the recipient does not need to have the Net Snippets software, in order to view the Snippet.

E-mailing a Snippet using any E-mail program
This method is similar to 'E-mailing a Snippet using Outlook Express' but instead of opening Outlook Express, it creates an HTML mail file and places it on your Desktop. The file is always named after the Snippet and has the '.MHT' file extension.

All you need to do is open your E-mail software and attach this file to the e-mail message you are sending. When the recipient receives the file (Snippet), he/she will be able to view it, by simply opening it in their default web browser.

To use this option select the 'Prepare for E-mail' menu item under the 'Organize->E-mail' menu.

E-mailing multiple Snippets
Net Snippets allows you to E-mail an entire Folder including its sub folders and Snippets. To use this option select the 'Organize->E-mail' menu, after selecting a Folder.

When using this method, you can select between 2 packaging formats. The Net Snippets format (also called .NS) and the well known Zip format.

Which format you select depends on the recipient of the E-mail. If the recipient has the Net Snippets software, it is recommended to use the .NS format. If the recipient does not have Net Snippets or you are unsure, use the Zip format.

In both cases the recipient will receive a single file attachment which contains all the Snippets you sent. To read more about the '.NS' format, please see 'E-mailing Snippets to other Net Snippets users' section.

Please note, this method does not actually send an e-mail but instead prepares a file attachment on your Desktop, which you should e-mail yourself.

E-mailing Snippets to other Net Snippets users
When you know for sure that a friend or work colleague has Net Snippets installed, it is recommended to use the '.NS' format when sending Snippets by e-mail.

To send a Snippet or Folder by E-mail, using the .NS format follow these steps:

  1. Select a Snippet or Folder in the Net Snippets explorer bar.
  2. Select the 'Organize->E-mail' menu item if you are e-mailing a Folder or the "Organize->E-mail->E-mail Wizard" menu item if you are e-mailing a Snippet.
  3. Follow the instructions provided by the E-mail wizard and make sure you select the 'Package in Net Snippets format' option.
  4. Select if to include sub-folders and Snippet details by checking or un-checking the appropriate options.
  5. In the last Wizard screen, click the 'Package Now' button.
  6. A new file named after the Folder or Snippet you selected (with the .NS extension), should now be on your Desktop.
  7. Attach the .NS file to your e-mail message and send it using your preferred E-mail software.

You can also use this method to prepare .NS files for other transport mechanisms (not E-mail). For example, you could send a .NS file though Instant messaging, FTP or even place it on a floppy disk and have someone else open it on his/her computer. The only requirement is that the target machine, has Net Snippets installed.

Other Options
Sorting Snippets and Folders

  • Show Information Tip when the mouse is over a Snippet - This option specifies if an information tip should be shown when you move your mouse over a Snippet. You can also customize which fields are going to be included in the Snippet information tip in the 'Show Fields' section in the same screen.
  • Auto Format - The Auto Format feature allows you to specify if new Snippets will automatically be formatted. You can specify the background and foreground colors of a new Snippet and the Font style. If you disable auto formatting, you can still apply the format you specified, using the 'Auto Format' button in the 'Snippet Editor' window.

Color Settings:

  • Toolbar Color - This option allows you to specify the color of the main Net Snippets toolbar.
  • Explorer Bar Color - This option allows you to specify the color of the Net Snippets Explorer Bar.

  • Snippet Information Tip Text Color -  Allow you to select the text color of the Snippet/Folder information tip.

Defining Keywords:

The Keywords tab, located in the 'Options' screen, allows you to specify the list of available keywords. When adding or editing Snippets, you can associate one or more of these keywords to the Snippet. Keywords can also be used when searching for Snippets (see Searching Snippets).

Defining Custom Fields:

The Custom Fields tab, located in the 'Options' screen, allows you to create your own user-defined fields to better describe a Snippet. When adding or editing a Snippet, you are able to edit these custom fields from the 'Other Information' tab located in the Snippet Editor. Currently, all custom fields are text fields, they are not limited in length or the number of fields you can define.

When adding a new custom field you will be asked to give it a name and specify if Net Snippets will "remember" its last value. Instructing Net Snippets to "remember" the last value is useful for fields like "Your Name" or "Your E-mail Address". After entering the value once for the first Snippet, you won't need to re-enter it for each new Snippet.

Custom fields will be displayed in Bibliography Reports and are also Searchable.

Adding the Net Snippets Toolbar to Internet Explorer
Adding the Net Snippets toolbar to Internet Explorer, is easy. Simply click Internet Explorer's 'View->Toolbars' menu item and select 'Net Snippets' from the available toolbars.

In new versions of Internet Explorer you may need to right click the main IE toolbar and uncheck the 'Lock the Toolbars' option, after adding the Net Snippets toolbar. This will allow you to position the Net Snippets toolbar according to your personal preferences.

After positioning the Net Snippets toolbar, you can lock IE's toolbars so that you don't accidentally move them.

Browsing to a Snippet's source
When Net Snippets saves a Snippet it also saves source information like URL & title. For example, if the Snippet was taken from a web page, the web address the Snippet came from, is saved. There are two ways you can browse back to this web address:
  • The quick way is to click a Snippet (In the Net Snippets Explorer bar) while holding down the Control key (Ctrl). Instead of seeing the Snippet in the browser window, like you are used to, you'll see the web page where the Snippet came from. If the Snippet was saved from several web sites, you'll see a list of all the referring URLs.
  • Another way you can browse to the Snippet source is by clicking the link in the 'Snippet Details' frame, just below the actual Snippet.

Accessing Snippets through Windows Explorer
By default, all Snippets reside under a folder called 'My Snippets'. The 'My Snippets' folder is located under your 'My Documents' folder. You can access individual Snippets from Windows Explorer or 'My Computer' by browsing that folder.

You can change the location where Snippets are stored in the 'General' tab, located in the Net Snippets 'Options' screen.
