Monitoring Connection Activity

You can use Performance Monitor in Windows NT to monitor your Web server's connection activity. When you monitor the number of current and attempted connections, you can assess the popularity of your content and assess whether the bandwidth is adequate for the load. For example, Performance Monitor counters can reveal that a Web site has had many more connection attempts than current connections. You can then use this performance information to decide what to do about increasing the bandwidth for the site. For detailed information about using Performance Monitor, see the Windows NT documentation.

To monitor connection activity
  1. In Windows NT, click the Start button, then point to Programs and then Administrative Tools (Common).
  2. On the resulting submenu, click Performance Monitor.
  3. Performance Monitor appears.

  4. From the View menu, make sure Chart is selected.
  5. From the Edit menu, click Add to Chart.
  6. The Add to Chart dialog box appears.

  7. In the Object list, select FTP Service or HTTP Service.
  8. In the Instance list, if applicable, select the Web or FTP site for which you wish to monitor performance. Select Total if you want to monitor all Web sites or FTP sites together.
  9. In the Counter list, select one or more of the following counters, and click Add after selecting each one:
    • Current Connections   This is the number of user connections to your Web or FTP sites.
    • Maximum Connections This is the maximum number of users connected to your Web or FTP sites at a specific interval of time.
    • Total Connection Attempts This is the total number of connection attempts that have been made.
  10. Repeat steps 5 through 8 as needed, then click Done.
  11. Note   For information on creating a performance log with the counters you have selected, see Recording Performance Over Time.
