The Hohe Tauern National Park has an area of approximately 1800 km▓ and is one of the last large, intact and undisturbed mountain environments in the heart of Europe. The Park protects characteristic terrain and landscape types which contain unique animal and plant worlds.

The peaks, cliffs, glacier regions and alpine grasslands remain untouched here from human influence. Different underlying geological formations and climatic conditions which change according to elevation are responsible for fascinating and specially adapted natural communities. Nature can develop according to its own laws here.

The historically significant cultural areas and the traditionally cultivated farming landscapes of the alpine meadows are all integrated into the National Park. The harmonic correlation of cliffs and glacier regions, water elements, forests and alpine meadows provides a diversity of habitats and the remarkable landscape characteristics of the Hohe Tauern.
