To optimize your network connection time, Active Setup downloads only the install engine, then identifies any potential problems (such as insufficient disk space) before downloading any components.
These Active Setup features make installation easier than ever:
- Components can be dynamically updated with Active Setup. Just download the latest versions of the components. You don't need to redistribute the install engine to your users.
- You can use Active Setup to create a single Internet Explorer 4.0 installation disk that contains only the install engine, which will then download components from your server. You can also post all installation files on a Web server, or create an installation CD-ROM for your users.
- If there is a broken connection or transfer error, Active Setup attempts to pick up where it left off. This keeps the user from having to download the components repeatedly.
- Your users can install their customized browsers over earlier versions of Internet Explorer or other Internet browsers; they can also install the customized browser if they don't have a browser installed. They must have an Internet connection and Internet access (either through an Internet Service Provider or through a corporate proxy server).
- Active Setup creates the following two log files that help you pinpoint any issues that may occur. The log files appear in the Windows or NT folders:
Active Setup Log.txt – Logs all actions during the Active Setup wizard or component installation. Use this log if Internet Explorer 4.0 components are not installed properly.
RunOnceEx Log.txt – Logs all actions during Dynamic Link Library registration. Use this log if you receive a message stating that a specific .dll did not register properly, or if any unexpected dialog box appears during the final phase of setup.
