To use the Enterprise JavaBeans (EJB) Functionality, choose Enterprise|Configure Servers the first time you run JBuilder 2006 to setup the application server of your choice.
Borland StarTeam provides an automated and comprehensive software configuration management (SCM) system for supporting the management of assets and application lifecycle tasks, all from within a single repository.
Designed for use in situations where there is no database administrator or IT support, Borland InterBase is powerful enough to support mission-critical applications, yet compact enough to run on very modest systems. Unlike enterprise databases that require expensive ecosystems of support and maintenance, InterBase requires virtually no maintenance. Registered users of JBuilder can also download a Developer version of InterBase. For more information, see Using InterBase with JBuilder 2006.

The installation program appears to hang during exit
Under some circumstances, it may take a long time for the installation program to exit and close after completion. Do not forcibly exit the program; it will eventually close down successfully.
If the installation can be performed successfully on another machine (with the same OS platform), the resulting installation directory can be copied from one machine to another. This can be the easiest way to workaround installation problems, but is only useful when other machines on a network are available.
Error -1 when starting the installation program from a CD-ROM
This error occurs when the CD-ROM driver is having trouble reading from the CD. In this case, try copying the contents of the CD into a temporary directory on your hard drive and then launch the installer from that location. If the files cannot be copied from the CD-ROM to the hard drive because of read errors (e.g. error -1, read errors, etc.), check the CD for scratches. If the CD is visibly damaged, please call disk replacement to be issued new media by calling 831-461-9190.
If the contents of the CD-ROM still cannot be copied to the hard drive, an alternative is to simply download and install the appropriate trial version of JBuilder. The trial product will be converted to a full product by using your serial number during registration. Make sure that you choose the download that matches the license (e.g a serial number for Developer will NOT activate the Enterprise Trial). The Trial downloads may be accessed from the following location:
In this case, make sure to download and install any supplementary files on the same page as the main download (e.g documentation, samples, extras).
The main installation program does not launch when the CD-ROM is inserted
To eliminate possible conflicts with other third-party software, disable anti-virus software (e.g. stop the service), exit out of any other currently running software, and then retest the installation.
In Windows XP, you can automatically do this using the msconfig.exe tool to restart your system in a diagnostic mode that prevents third-party services from starting up. To do this:
Choose Start|Run.
Enter msconfig and click OK.
Under the General tab, select Diagnostic Startup and click OK.
Restart your system and start the JBuilder installation program again.
After successfully installing JBuilder, repeat these steps, changing Diagnostic Startup to your usual Startup mode.
Nothing happens after the installation program is started
If the main installation program does not automatically launch when the CD is inserted into the CD-ROM drive:
Navigate to the CD-ROM drive.
Navigate to the Disk1\InstData\<platform>\VM\ directory.
Double-click on the installation executable (install.exe or install.bin in most cases).
The installation programs seems to start, but then freezes at the splash screen
To troubleshoot installation graphics driver issues, try the following:
First, visit the website of the manufacturer of the graphics card to download and install the latest driver.
Windows 2000/XP: If the issue is not resolved, try turning down the graphics card acceleration. To do this:
Right-click on the desktop.
Choose Properties|Settings|Advanced|Troubleshoot.
Set the Hardware acceleration to None.
Start the JBuilder installation program again.
Installing JBuilder as "root" (Linux or Solaris)
This note applies if you are installing JBuilder as a super-user through the "su" command or a different user from the one who started the X server process.
XWindows has security restrictions that can cause a GUI application to fail if running the application as a different user than the one logged in. One such case is when you open a terminal window and use the "su" command to become "root". The error message issued is usually 'Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server'. This is a security feature, not a bug. To avoid this problem, open a terminal window and type the following commands:
This command notifies XWindows that any user on your machine is authorized to use your display. After the installation you can run the command:
xhost -localhost
to reset the value to the default.
On Linux, another possible side effect of this is that you will get an icon for JBuilder 2006 installed on your desktop that does not work when selected. To fix this:
Log back in as root using the "su" command.
Copy the link created for the icon to your local desktop.
Insufficient available disk space reported with NFS volumes mounted (Solaris)
If you have any NFS volumes mounted, the installation may fail with an error reporting insufficient available disk space.
If you encounter this error and are certain that you have enough disk space available for installation,
disable NFS before installing JBuilder, then re-enable it after the installation has successfully completed.
The installation progress bar stays near the end for a very long time (Linux)
In most cases, the installation will complete successfully after waiting for a while.
Known problems
[173965] The installation program might report that it completed successfully without installing all of the files. This is most likely to happen if there is not enough disk space to complete the installation, but enough is detected by the installation program to begin the installation process.
[163474] Windows only: During a full installation of JBuilder Enterprise and Borland Enterprise Server, after the Borland Enterprise Server installation is finished, an error message is displayed:
Borland JBuilder Enterprise Install: javaw.exe - Wrong Volume
The wrong volume is in the drive. Please insert the volume JBuilder into the drive:
Workaround: This error does not affect your installation of either JBuilder or Borland Enterprise Server. If the error dialog persists even after you have clicked Cancel several times, try the following:
Start the Windows Task Manager.
Select the Processes tab.
Select the install_windows.exe process.
Click End Process.
If the error dialog is still visible, click Cancel again.
[123127] When a user reinstalls JBuilder to a different directory than the first time, the default JDK configuration points to wrong location. The user cannot compile code.
Workaround:
Choose Tools|Configure|JDKs.
Select this SDK on the Configure JDKs dialog.
Click on the Change button to change the JDK home path to a valid location.
Solaris only:
The Browse CD button does not work on the main installation launcher.
Workaround: Verify that dtfile (typically in /usr/dt/bin) is in your PATH.
The "JBuilder on the Web" or "Setup information" buttons do not work.
Workaround: Verify that netscape (typically in /opt/NSCPcom) is in your PATH.
Known problems (Linux)
Possible Problem: System minimum configuration meets or exceeds specified requirements, but JBuilder runs slowly.
Solution: The Linux kernel has problems with a few motherboard/BIOS not reporting total memory available. To check that all installed memory is being recognized, type the following at a shell prompt:
cat /proc/meminfo
the output will include a line looking like:
MemTotal: ######## kB
where "########" should equal the amount of memory your computer has. If it doesn't, you'll need to explicitly tell the kernel by editing the file /etc/lilo.conf.
[182564] When installing JBuilder on Linux, in order to use the all of the features the integration with Borland Enterprise Server, you must have the Korn shell installed.
[180257] The installation progress bar stays near the end for a very long time, making it appear that the installation program has hung.
Workaround: The installation will complete successfully after waiting for a while. The installation program is updating the permissions on all of the installed files--a process that can take a while.

When I log in using an account in a different Windows Domain, why can't I use the previously registered licenses for my Borland Products?
Borland products are licensed per user. The Windows operating system sees these accounts in other domains as different users, even if they share the same account name and password.
If both domains exist in the same organization, a trust could be established between the domains. With this configuration, a single domain login can be given access to resources in both domains. This would allow the one Windows login to use the resources in both domains, removing the need for multiple accounts.
Related Microsoft Knowledge Base "How To" Documents:
If the domains do not exist in the same organization, consider installing and using the software with a local user account. A local user account cannot automatically be provided access to resources in a domain, but instead would be prompted for credentials when attempting to access each resource. These credentials would be specific to the particular domain in which the resource is located.

When you're using a concurrent license for your Borland product, you might have occasions where you want to work offline, rather than connected to the Borland License Server. The License Manager provides Check Out and Check In features that allow you to work offline. When you check out a license, you need to specify the duration of the check out. Once you've completed your offline work, you can check in the license to return it to the license pool. The client product has to be able to reach the license server in order to check in the license.
Concurrent licenses are listed on the server in a userlist-concurrent.txt file. The maximum checkout time is set by the server administrator for each user.
Follow these simple steps to check out a license:
Choose Tools|License Manager to open the License Manager.
Right-click the Concurrent Network License node in the tree on the left and choose Check Out License.
Enter the duration time in hours in the License Duration (hours) field. You can't exceed the maximum checkout time set by your server administrator. See your administrator for the maximum setting.
Click OK to close the Checkout License dialog box. A Checkout Successful message displays. Click OK to close it. A red check mark displays next to the Concurrent Network License node to indicate that you're disconnected from the Borland License Server and can use the product offline.
Important: Notice that the remaining checkout time is displayed next to the Concurrent Network License node in parenthesis. For example, Concurrent Network License (1 hour left). To refresh the checkout time, right-click the Concurrent Network License node and choose Refresh Time Left.
Checking in a concurrent license
Once you've completed your offline work, you need to check the license in to return it to the license pool.
Follow these simple steps to check in a license:
Choose Tools|License Manager to open the License Manager.
Right-click the Concurrent Network License node in the tree on the left and choose Check In License.
Click Yes in the Confirm License Checkin dialog box to check the license in.
JBuilder Enterprise Trial users: Borland Enterprise Server is not included with trial editions of JBuilder. You can download a trial edition of Borland Enterprise Server 6.5 from Borland Enterprise Server Downloads.
See the Borland Enterprise Server 6.5 Release Notes for further information on installing and configuring the Borland Enterprise Server 6.5.
The serial number and key for the Borland Enterprise Server are provided in the Installation and Licensing Instructions pamphlet in your JBuilder 2006 product box.
Licensing issues with Borland Enterprise Server in JBuilder 2006 Developer and Enterprise
If you install both JBuilder 2006 Enterprise Edition and JBuilder 2006 Developer Edition (usually done for demonstration purposes) and also install Borland Enterprise Server in both cases, Borland Enterprise Server will not function due to conflicting licenses. To make Borland Enterprise Server work in this situation, do not install Borland Enterprise Server with either JBuilder Edition. Instead, download and install a trial version of Borland Enterprise Server 6.0RP1; this version can be used by both JBuilder editions.
Adding a Borland Deployment Op-Center license to a Borland Enterprise Server installed with JBuilder 2006
This configuration is not currently supported, as there is no user-based license available for Op-Center. Until this is available, download and install a trial version of Borland Enterprise Server 6.0RP1, then apply both the Borland Enterprise Server 6.0 Trial license and an Op-Center Trial (or Production) license.
Upgrading Borland Enterprise Server installed with JBuilder 2006 to a Borland Enterprise Server Production license
This requires that a configuration file be modified, and the Borland Enterprise Server management agent be restarted. A procedure for this upgrade will be available on the Borland Enterprise Server FAQ site at http://info.borland.com/devsupport/bes/faq/6.0/index.html.
J2ME Mobile development is automatically installed when you choose a full installation of JBuilder. A separate serial number and key is not required. For information on configuring JBuilder for mobile development, see readme.html.
See Developing Mobile Applications in the JBuilder documentation for information on using JBuilder Mobile development.
The Development version of InterBase is provided with JBuilder Enterprise and is included on the Premium Tools CD. JBuilder Developer customers can get InterBase from the JBuilder download site. (There is no Premium Tools CD for JBuilder Developer.) For links to downloads, please visit the JBuilder registered user page at http://www.borland.com/downloads/registered/download_jbuilder.html
Please unzip the contents of the JBuilder 2006 zip file and the Premium Tools zip file to separate directories. This will prevent files from being overwritten.
Choose Settings|Control Panel|Add/Remove programs and select "Borland JBuilder 2006 Enterprise" from the list.
Linux or Solaris
To uninstall JBuilder 2006, do one of the following:
Double-click "Uninstall Borland JBuilder 2006 Enterprise" in the directory where you installed JBuilder 2006.
Run /Developer/Applications/Borland/JBuilder2006/UninstallEnterprise/UninstallEnterprise.
Known problems
[206183] Uninstalling JBuilder might leave some files on your system which will need to be manually removed.
[206123] JBuilder uninstall is not removing the following files from the JBuilder/lib directory:
admintool.jar
gantry-common.jar
sbtoolbar.jar
servers
ss.jar
starteam-extensions.jar
starteam-gui.jar
starteam60.jar
streplicate.jar
[208325] The following files are left behind on Windows installations:
bin directory: SBToolbar.exe and 10 .dll files
extras directory: all files
lib/ext directory: Optimizeit config and jar files
templates/StarTeam/Reports directory: 157 files
[226996] You should uninstall the Premium Tools before uninstalling JBuilder. When the StarTeam client is installed, there is a bug that halts the uninstall.
Workaround: You will need to manually remove some of the files and directories.
