If you have trouble starting the game with one of these systems: - If your Windows desktop is set to a high color mode (more than 256 colors) change your display settings to use a 256 color mode. - If your desktop is at a resolution above 640x480, change your display settings to 640x480. In most cases the game will run properly with these two workarounds. If the problems persist please contact your computer dealer for assistance. Note for advanced users: There are mixed reports about different drivers for these cards. One source recommended rolling the drivers back to 4.1.21 or earlier, others reccommend the newest drivers. The manufacturer, Alliance Semiconductor, distributes generic drivers for the chipset. There do not appear to be any drivers specifically written for the NEC implementation of the card. Alliance Semiconductor driver website http://www.alsc.com/ProMotion/support/index.html#DrvList AMD and Cyrix based systems --------------------------------------- This game uses the floating point processor for compression of voice data. You may want to disable voice playback if your processor is 'floating point challenged'. This applies to most AMD and some slower Cyrix CPUs. Voice playback can be disabled by adding the line Voice=0 to the [Sound] section of the FTA2.INI file in your Windows directory. Aztech Sound Galaxy Nova-16 Extra II --------------------------------------- On Packard Bell Pentium P60 and P75 machines using the Aztech Sound Galaxy Nova-16 Extra II (Washington) sound cards, you may experience task switching problems or crashes during game startup. These appear to be related to configuration detection problems in some of the older drivers for these cards. The latest drivers for this card are v 4.6.5 and are available at the Aztec web page. Aztech's driver website (FTP site really) ftp://ftp.aimnet.com/pub/users/aztech/win95/ Removing the game CD while in use --------------------------------------- Unless you used the unreasonably large instllation of the game, you should leave the game CD in the drive while playing the game, and even then you should not eject the CD while the videos are playing. If the CD is ejected while the game is using it, you are likely to get what is referred to as "the blue screen of death". The screen says to hit enter after putting the CD back in, but doing so is usualy ineffective, and the machine must be rebooted. ===================================================================== Manual Configuration Options (for advanced users) --------------------------------------------------------------------- Note: The uninstall program is likely to give you a "Not all components could be uninstalled" type warning if you change your configuration manually. You can safely ignore this warning. File locations --------------------------------------- The game uses entries in the [Paths] section of the FTA2.INI file to locate all its files. You can manually configure where these files are by moving the files and changing these entries. FILE INI entry CD path Description ------------------------------------------------------------------- FTAIMAGE.HRS ImageFile d:\RES All graphics data FTASOUND.HRS SoundFile d:\RES Music and non-voice sound FX FTAVOICE.HRS VoiceFile d:\RES Compressed voice data FTA.HRS MainResFile d:\RES Game objects and other data FTADATA.HRS DataFile d:\RES Behavior and spell tables SCRIPTS.HRS ScriptFile d:\RES Game interaction scripting *.SMK VideoPath d:\VIDEO Intro and ending videos Other options --------------------------------------- Note that these options are unsupported, and if you have any problems with them, then don't use them. Disabling audio: You can disable particular aspects of the audio in the game by adding one of these options to the [Sound] section of the INI file. Voice=0 disables voice playback Sound=0 disables one shot sound effects Loops=0 disables looping background sounds Music=0 disables MIDI music Windowed mode: You can run the game in a window by adding a Windowed=1 line to the [Options] section of your INI file. The game does run noticeably slower in this mode so you should only try it if you have a fast machine. Windows should be running 800x600 or better, and must be in a 256 color mode.
