Wyse first with $500 Internet client 24 June
Wyse Technology is claiming the first $500 "thin client" computing device with Internet capabilities that will be supplied, bundled, through an Internet service provider (ISP). The new Wyse Winterm information devices have Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) and modem capabilities enabling direct access to the Internet.

Moose Logic Technologies, a regional ISP in Woodinville, Washington, will be the first ISP to offer subscribers the network computing device, included as part of the basic Internet package. Moose Logic Technologies' package will provide a Winterm Internet box and unlimited Internet access for as low as $39.95 per month.

Nadia Jamshidi, a spokesperson for Wyse, told Newsbytes that this will be the first of many ISPs to be offering the Winterm bundled in with a Internet access package. Within the next few weeks, a "large national ISP organization" will be including the Winterm bundled, said Jamshidi.

The new Internet-capable Winterm "thin client" device comes with a keyboard, mouse, modem, and full Windows compatibility. Pricing for the new Winterm models begins at $500 for black and white monitors, up to $900 for 15-inch color monitor. Jamshidi said that the first roll outs will be through ISPs, with all models available for individuals in July.

Wyse claims to be the only company to deliver on the promise of a $500 "thin client" Internet-capable device. Wyse's Winterm device enables users to utilize software residing on application servers located over the Internet. Wyse's Terminal 2000 (T2000) hardware/software technology is the platform for the Winterm product line.

"Functionality beyond that of the highly-touted network computer, or NC, of tomorrow is here today with our Winterm product family," said Jeff McNaught, Wyse's director and general manager of advanced platforms. "The original $500 Winterm devices introduced last year delivered Microsoft Windows 3.1, 95, and NT applications to the corporate desktop at a fraction of the cost of a PC. Now, we are delivering Windows applications and Internet access to the home and other markets where cost and functionality are critical issues."

The first generation Winterm models were officially introduced in November, 1995. They were terminal boxes with minimal computing power. Adding Internet access creates the $500 Internet box. In recent weeks, Wyse has joined the Network Computer (NC) Reference Profile and added Sun Microsystems' JavaOS.
