Microsoft signs deal with Japanese credit card company 24 June
Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates will sign a deal with Japan's biggest credit card company, JCB, in Tokyo on Wednesday, it was confirmed to Newsbytes today. The US computer giant will assist JCB in researching and trials of electronic commerce on the Internet.

JCB will gain advanced encryption and verification technology from Microsoft which will enable it to open an Internet shopping mall in April next year. Around 200 stores will take part in the project according to reports, including a front page story in today's Nihon Keizai Shimbun.

The technology to be supplied is based on the combined electronic commerce standard, called Secure Electronic Transactions (SET), agreed between Visa International and Mastercard International in February this year. Other companies that are participating in the ongoing development include IBM, GTE, Microsoft, Netscape, SAIC, Terisa Systems, and Verisign.

In the United States, use of SET in Internet applications is scheduled to make its public debut in the fourth quarter, around three to six months before the Japanese trials are expected to begin.
