Sports mags race for Olympic coverage 20 June
NBC's Interactive Media and Sports divisions said new participants in the form of major sporting magazines are crossing the cyber-finish line to help the network cover this summer's Olympic Games on the World Wide Web

"Having reports from sports magazines means our Web users will get the most detailed and authoritative news on these sports from the leading international experts in the field," said Bet Howard, NBC Interactive Media producer. Howard also said the Web site will compliment and add to a TV viewer's enjoyment of watching NBC's Olympic coverage.

The magazines providing special Olympic coverage include: Track & Field News, which will report on US Olympic track and field events; VeloNews will create Olympic-specific information on the history of cycling; International Gymnast will give an international perspective on the various gymnastic endeavors at the Games; Volleyball magazine will provide a preview of the games; and Swimming World will cover the competitors and editorial analyses of swimming and diving.

NBC's Olympic Web site will also cover the games on an hour-by-hour basis -- with digital photos of each event, a chat room for each of the 30 Olympic sports, an "Athlete of the Week" profile, and a weekly interactive poll. One-on-one interviews with athletes and coaches will be provided, as well as NBC air talent. Another feature will give Web surfers a glimpse into what really happens at the Olympics, with a daily diary from ten Olympic hopefuls.

Television schedules and stories from Olympic historian Bud Greenspan will also be available at the site. Advertising is also ramping up for NBC's cyberspace Olympic coverage.
