The Tweek FAQ

How do I make Tweeks settings available to all programs?

You need to alter your autoexec.bat if you want to do this. You need to remove all lines that are of the form "set FX_" or "set SST_"

You should also put a line in "call C:\twk3dfx.bat"

e.g.

Before

Set INCLUDE=C:\INCLUDE;C:\MFC\INCLUDE

Set TEMP=C:\temp

Set FX_GLIDE_NO_SPLASH=0

Set SST_GRXCLK=47

Becomes

Set INCLUDE=C:\INCLUDE;C:\MFC\INCLUDE

Set TEMP=C:\temp

....

Call c:\twk3dfx.bat

If you just want to use tweek to launch other programs with modified settings then you dont need to do this.

Hey! What do all these weird options do?

Weird Lighting effect

This appears to cause bright pixels in the top of the screen to be replicated across the screen. This has the appearance of certain types of lens flare û hence the name.

Slight Blurring

This causes the pixels to run slightly û the result being an overall blurring of the screen. Quite what you would use this for is a mystery.

Shameless Plug

This causes the æ3dfx logoÆ to appear in the corner of all programs.

All of these options DO NOT AFFECT PERFORMANCE.

What would be the highest performance set of options?

Tick Fast Memory Option, Fast PCI Read and set overclock to something.

Hey! But disabling Vsync speeds X up.

Sure it does û but it also causes ætearingÆ. Some people find that the tearing artifacts reduce their enjoyment of some games.

I cannot overclock my board at all û do I have a dud board?

No. Your board is specified to run at a certain speed û in the current set of boards thatÆs 50Mhz. If you can overclock beyond that then that is a bonus.

How can I be sure that Overclocking to speed X is OK?

After you have overclocked your board, you should load Tunnel or Valley of Ra and keep it running for 25-30 minutes or so. If your machine locks up then you are overclocking the machine too much.

You should also keep an eye out for artifacts û texture map corruptions and polygons not being drawn.

Orchid users should be aware that EltronTech RAM boards appear to be able to go upto 57. The Sec RAM versions donÆt appear to go as high. (See below).

Monster users appear able to go upto 57.

Do these options affect Direct3d?

Yes they do.

IÆm altering the gamma and nothing is happening!

The gamma changes only take affect when the refresh rate is set to 60Hz. Above that the refresh rate is disabled. To re-enable it you need to tick the 24Bpp box on the æGammaÆ page.

IÆm using a Monster but overclock is doing nothing!

Check your autoexec.bat for set SST_GRXCLK lines that have appeared from nowhere. It appears that the Monsters utility may set this.

My spinning logo has vanished!

I bet you installed MW2 recently. This adds a line to your autoexec.bat:

Set FX_GLIDE_NOSPLASH=1. When you stop playing MW2 remove this line from autoexec.bat

Driver Excitement

In recent weeks, Orchid made available their v1.3 driver. This enforces an underclocking of 48Mhz. This does result is lesser performance and solves some problems with some programs. I would recommend that you donÆt use these drivers and stick to the 1.1 release or the 1.2 release.

Fatal Racing

This appears to be more stable when the 3dfx boards are underclocked. Some people report that 46-48 is the most useful for Fatal Racing.

Where can I download Tweek?

You can get Tweek from:

http://www.wolf.demon.co.uk/

http://www.crunge.com/voodoo/

http://www.dimension3d.com/

I canÆt get GlQuake to run...

Sorry, I donÆt answer questions about GlQuake... Quite a few sites carry GLQUAKE FAQÆs. You could search for them by going to alta-vista ( http://www.alta-vista.com/ ) and doing a search for "+glquake +faq".

Known Problems

It does appear to crash if you run Tweek on Windows NT v4.

Does Tweek do anything with my Verite/Virge/Kitchen Sink?

Nope. It is a 3dfx utility only.

Anything other 3dfx utilities coming soon?

Not really. Tweek has been pushed as far as it can. If there are other, useful settings then I have yet to discover them. I might change the UI a bit though. It doesnÆt seem possible to write a screen centering program though, which is the bane of some users lives.

I keep on meaning to finish of a small program that IÆve been playing with through Glide. IÆm suffering from a severe lack of time though.
