OVERVIEW ************************************************************ The Intel® INF Installation Utility installs to the target system the Windows* INF files that outline to the operating system how the chipset components shall be configured. This is needed for proper functionality of the following features: - Core PCI and ISAPNP Services - AGP Support - IDE/ATA33/ATA66 Storage Support - USB Support - Identification of Intel Chipset Components in Device Manager Files for Windows 98 operating system and files for Windows 95 operating system are included in this software package. The files for Windows 95 are designed to work solely with Windows 95 (all versions). The files for Windows 98 are designed to work solely with Windows 98. ************************************************************ * 2. CONTENTS OF THE DISTRIBUTION PACKAGE ************************************************************ The Intel® INF Installation Utility package contains the following items: File ---- INFINST.ZIP README.TXT RELNOTES.TXT The version of the software included in the distribution package is specified in the file, RELNOTES.TXT. After installation, the one or more of the following files are copied to the (the target directory selected during installation - refer to Section 4 for more information). *** NOTE: Only the files that reference the currently detected devices are copied to the system. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS ************************************************************ 1. The system must contain one of the following Intel chipsets: Intel® 810 Chipset Intel® 820 Chipset Intel® 430TX PCIset Intel® 440BX AGPset Intel® 440DX AGPset Intel® 440EX AGPset Intel® 440GX AGPset Intel® 440LX AGPset Intel® 440ZX AGPset 2. The one of the following operating systems must be installed on the system: Windows 95 4.00.950 (Original Release) Windows 95 4.00.950a (OSR1) Windows 95 4.00.950b (OSR2 without USB Supplement) Windows 95 4.00.950b (OSR2.1 with USB Supplement) Windows 95 4.00.950c (OSR2.5 with or without USB Supplement) Windows 98 4.10.1998 (Original Release) Windows 98 Second Edition 4.10.2222 (Original Release) 3. This software has been designed solely for systems running Windows 95 or Windows 98 with one of the above Intel® chipsets. 4. It is recommended that the kit software be installed on systems with at least 32MB of system memory. 5. It is recommended that there is sufficient hard disk space in the directory (typically C:\WINDOWS\TEMP) on the system to install this software. Please check with your system provider to determine which operating system and Intel® chipset are used in your system. ************************************************************ * 4. INSTALLING THE SOFTWARE ************************************************************ 1. Check the System Requirements. Windows 95 or Windows 98 must be fully installed and running on the system prior to running this software. 2. Close any running applications. You may experience some difficulties if you don't do this. 3. Un-zip the InstallShield* installation program files into a temporary directory. 4. Run the InstallShield installation program, SETUP.EXE. 5. You will be prompted to agree to the license agreement. If you do not agree, the Installer will exit prior to extracting any files. 6. The README.TXT file will be copied to the directory C:\Program Files\Intel\InfInst by default. If desired, change the target directory by selecting 'Browse.' This directory will henceforth be referred to as 7. Follow the screen instructions and use default settings to complete the setup once the operating system has rebooted. 8. At this point, the installation of the Intel® INF Installation Utility is complete. ************************************************************ * 5. VERIFYING INSTALLATION OF THE SOFTWARE ************************************************************ NOTE: This procedure is common to both Windows 95 and Windows 98 systems. Run Device Manager to verify correct installation and usage of the INF files. 1. Click on Start 2. Select Settings 3. Select Control Panel 4. Double click on System icon 5. Click on Device Manager tab 6. Click on View Devices by Connection button 7. Click on Plug and Play BIOS 8. Click on PCI 9. TROUBLESHOOTING ************************************************************ It is assumed that the system requirements from Section 3 above have been satisfied. Issue: System locks up during Device Manager Remove or during restart. Solution: System lockup can occur during Restart as a result of several possible system issues. In the event of system lockup, restart the machine and view Device Manager. If devices are listed properly and system experiences no further problems, then .INF file restore process was successful. If devices are not configured correctly try re-running the procedures outlined in Section 4. If this does not fix problems or further problems are experienced, re-install the operating system. Issue: After running the setup program and rebooting the machine, Windows claims that it cannot find one of the following files: ESDI_506.pdr Solution: Click Browse in the dialog box where this problem occurs and locate the \System\IOSubsys directory and click OK. The system should be able to locate this file in this directory and continue re-enumerating for the new devices. Issue: After running the setup program and rebooting the machine, Windows claims that it cannot find one of the following files: UHCD.SYS USBD.SYS USBHUB.SYS Solution: Click Browse in the dialog box where this problem occurs and locate the \System32\drivers directory and click OK. The system should be able to locate this file in this directory and continue re-enumerating for the new devices. ************************************************************ ************************************************************ * DISCLAIMER ************************************************************ Intel is making no claims of usability, efficacy or warranty.
