Thank you for trying UPS Monitor for OS/2.

UPS Monitor comes with two executables:

 - UPS Monitor works for the American Power Conversion UPS models
   Back-UPS Pro, Smart-UPS and Smart-UPS v/s when using UPSMONS.EXE.

 - UPSMONB.EXE works with the APC Model Back-UPS (non-Pro version).


To install UPS Monitor for the first time, unzip the archive into
a subdirectory, I suggest to use the name UPSMON. From an OS/2
command line in the UPSMON directory, type INSTALL and follow the
directions displayed on screen. By default, UPS Monitor will not
connect when first opened.

If you are upgrading from a previous version, you must first close
UPS Monitor if it is running, then simply copy all files over an
existing installation. 

Make sure you use the proper cables with your UPS. See the HELP
sections in the UPS Monitor executables for information.

For more information on UPS Monitor, please consult the online
Help file. This software deals with shutting your system down
during power failures. Please familiarize yourself with the
program operation and understand how shutdown of the operating
system and UPS turn off happens before you use UPS Monitor.

For users of UPSMONB.EXE for APC UPS model Back-UPS.

Please read this carefully. I have discovered the behavior
listed below on my APC model Back-UPS 400 and assume that
all Back-UPS models reflect the same behavior. Remember,
this only happens when the line power is off and the UPS
is running on battery. It is a limitation specific to the
UPS, not the UPS Monitor software.

The Back-UPS (no-Pro) model uses the DTR line of the serial
port to receive a signal to turn itself off during a power failure.
If DTR is ON and the UPS is running on batteries (line power off),
it will turn off right away without any delay.

Under what circumstances can the UPS turn off unexpectedly?

  - The UPS can turn off if you connect the UPS with any
    cable to a serial port at the same time a power failure occurs.

  - If the UPS is attached to a serial port, no Back-UPS specific
    software is controlling it and the power goes out.

  - When UPS Monitor B is started while the UPS is running from battery
    (line power off) and DTR was left turned on from a previous program
    that controlled the serial port.

To prevent this unexpected turn off, you can do the following:

  - Start UPS Monitor B only when line power is active.

  - Connect serial cable to UPS only when line power is active and
    then run UPS Monitor B right away.


UPS Monitor B will turn DTR off whenever it is started. If you don't
use the serial port for any other purposes, and UPS Monitor B is used
exclusively to monitor the UPS, DTR will remain off and the above problem
will never happen. Other UPS models are not affected by this problem.
