Beginning immediately, the development of CandyBarZ will be taken over by OS/2
Netlabs (http://www.netlabs.org). Among other
things, this means that CandyBarZ will be free.
I have several reasons for taking this step, chief among them being lack of
time. This move should not be interpreted as the death of another OS/2 developer.
I will continue to work on CandyBarZ, along with Peter Garner (peter.garner@toward.com)
and Eric Norman (warped@cs.montana.edu). Peter will assume the organizational duties,
and suggestions and problem reports should now be sent his way (gripes about this
post should be sent my way).
I would like to thank everyone who has registered CandyBarZ and reassure them
that their investment is secure. Development will continue, and many new features
are planned. Image support is nearly complete, and my mailbox is overflowing with
excellent suggestions for other enhancements.
Thank you for your support.

[I called Star Division and was told that both SO4 and SO5 should be availavle
in General Release by the end of this quarter. (why they choose to release both
at the same time, I have no idea) They said that the SO5 OS/2 and Java versions
would not be out until after the windows version. I believe he mentioned quarter
3. If you buy SO4 you get a free upgrade to SO5 (I assume this is because SO4 OS/2
will be out before SO5 OS/2, although both versions for Windows should be coming
out at the same time). I'm also assuming that since I started off by mentioning
the English version that these dates are for the English version. I was also told
that the going price of a copy would be $295. I don't know how much credence can
be given to this information, but at least now there is a place to call and people
to talk too.]
IBM to target low-end computing with OS/2 Warp
Once intended to rival Microsoft Corp.'s Windows NT Server and Novell Inc.'s
NetWare, IBM's OS/2 Warp Server is now being relegated to the low end of the server
operating system spectrum.
The next major release of OS/2 Warp-code-named Aurora and due in the first half
of 1999-will serve as an entry-level solution for corporate customers intent on
making Java the centerpiece of their network computing strategies, IBM officials
said.
"We're strong believers in thin-client computing," said Jeff Smith,
director of OS/2 business line management for IBM in Austin, Texas. "We will
continue to position OS/2 as an entry-level server for customers who want to simplify
the role of network clients in a workplace and lower their total cost of ownership."
Key to that strategy will also be continued enhancements to IBM's Workspace
on Demand client management software, Smith said. An updated version of Workspace
on Demand-which will include the ability to reboot clients remotely via IP instead
of NetBIOS-is due in the fourth quarter.
Features slated for Aurora include a journaling file system borrowed from IBM's
AIX operating system to improve server availability, year 2000 compliance and support
for the euro currency. So far, IBM has no plans yet to make OS/2 Warp Server over
into a 64-bit operating system to run on Intel Corp.'s Merced.
"We're taking a wait-and-see approach with Merced," Smith said. The
decision to port OS/2 Warp to Merced will depend on customer demand, he added.
IBM, of Armonk, N.Y., can be reached at www.ibm.com.
The OS/2 Process Documentation project housed at:
http://unsleeping.dyn.ml.org/processdoc.html
has been updated. The object of the project is to document just what each of
those processes that get launched by the default OS/2 CONFIG.SYS actually do. I'm
sure we've all wondered at some stage exactly what LSDAEMON.EXE does, why it's
there, whether you can kill it and reclaim valuable RAM, and so on. Hopefully,
one day we'll have the answer to those questions, for all those 20 odd processes
that are running before we even launch an app. This project keeps track of this
information as it comes to light.
AUSTIN, May 5, 1998 . . . IBM today announced several enhancements for the OS/2*
Warp Server family of products improving system management and back-up and recovery
capabilities. In addition, IBM has outlined plans for a new version of OS/2 Warp
Server and the next release of WorkSpace On-Demand, IBM's server-managed client
operating system.
IBM plans to introduce this next release into the OS/2 Warp Server family of
products in early 1999 and will serve as IBM's entry level server platform for
running e-business applications. In addition, IBM's new release of WorkSpace On-Demand
is also targeted for early 1999 and will offer customers support for a broader
range of hardware devices.
"We continue to strengthen the OS/2 Warp Server platform as a true enterprise
solution to meet our customers needs today," said Jeff Smith, director of
IBM's OS/2 Business Unit. "As more companies become e-businesses, we want
to offer an entry-level server platform that will provide all of the features and
functionality needed to build a network computing architecture that can grow to
meet customer's expanding e-business demands in the future."
New Features for Today's OS/2 Warp Server
OS/2 Warp Server systems management provides network administrators with a highly
flexible tool that allows them to configure, monitor, and manage local and remote
systems in a heterogeneous environment. This new update offers administrators management
of Windows NT 4.0 clients, expanded hardware support, and added functionality such
as continuous resource monitoring, utilization reports for all servers, and report
generation ranging from hourly to monthly.
IBM's backup and recovery feature in OS/2 Warp Server provides users with non-stop
system backup and recovery functionality through an easy-to-use graphical user
interface (GUI) or a new command-line interface. This enables users to schedule
backups to run with minimum intervention and allows for lost files to be restored
in minutes with its unique indexing facility. New features included in OS/2 Warp
Server's backup and recovery include:
Large Network Administration and Backup -- In addition to the easy-to-use graphical
interface, the new command-line interface now offers network administrators flexibility
to automate and customize the backup process for large networks.
Dual Device Backup Set and Removable Media Support -- Administrators can now
backup data on one or more different backup devices allowing for full system backups
to a tape drive, with incremental backup on a quick access drive. The tape drive
can be used for disaster recovery while the removable drive, such as IOMEGA JAZ
and ZIP drives, can be locally available for quick recovery. This allows an administrator
to take advantage of the price, capacity, and speed characteristics of different
storage devices, minimizing the time needed to recover an up-to-date system.
The new systems management and backup and recovery functionality that has been
added to OS/2 Warp Server is available today from Software Choice, IBM's Internet
software delivery site, at http://www.software.ibm.com/os2warp.
Roadmap Includes New Version of OS/2 Warp Server and WorkSpace On-Demand
The next release of OS/2 Warp Server is planned for beta availability in late
1998 and will be IBM's entry level e-business server and an ideal platform to help
reduce the total cost of management with WorkSpace On-Demand. In addition to all
of the feature and functionality found in today's OS/2 Warp Server, the new release
will offer customers out-of-box support for Year 2000 and Eurocurrency -- two critical
issues businesses are facing today. It will also include a high-performance Journaling
File System offering faster performance, improved scalability, and enhanced Web
serving capabilities. General availability is planned for early 1999.
The plans for the new release of WorkSpace On-Demand include support of a broader
set of hardware using standard IP Protocols allowing customers to continue to build
upon their existing hardware investments. IBM also plans to provide additional
pre-configured machine classes for hardware that has broad appeal to today's customers.
One example of the extended pre-configured machine class support, will be WorkSpace
On-Demand's support for select IBM Network Stations. Additional planned enhancements
will focus on continued ease-of-use for administrators by enhancing WorkSpace On-Demand's
application installation and machine class creation tools.
This release will also include Java 1.1.6 with support for additional releases
as they become available. General availability is planned for the fourth quarter
of 1998.

GUDisk - Graham Utilities WPS Disk Class
Last modified: 21 Apr 98
Beta: Release Notes
Release V1.03
I believe that everything in the GUDisk module is complete, please let me know
if you find anything wrong.
I have implemented the DeskMan2QuerySetup method, so the GUDisk class should
respond to and use either DeskMan/2 or Object Desktop to save its data.
The GUDisk.Hlp file is now mostly complete. It is only missing some of the stuff
needed for the individual commands. All of the class reference and programming
information is considered to be complete.
InstWPS.Exe is used to install the class. Make sure that GUDisk.Dll is in a
path in your LIBPATH statement - the directory where you installed the text version
of The Graham Utilities for OS/2, V2.00 will do fine (assuming that you updated
CONFIG.SYS in the original install). INSTWPS will install the class, INSTWPS -d
will deregister the classes. A reboot is necessary at each stage. Or, you can use
killem or something similar to kill PMSHELL.EXE - just make sure that the INI's
have been written to disk.
Please let me know what you find or any other comments.

WPSoundPalette - WPS Sound Scheme Palette Class
Last modified: 21 Apr 98
Beta: Release Notes
Release V1.02
I have implemented a WPS class that encances your Warp 4/Warp 3 system. Warp
4 comes with the concept of "Sound Schemes". A Sound Scheme is a logical
collection of sound files that are grouped together to form a theme/scheme. Under
Warp 4, there are 4 schemes provided. However, IBM in their infinite wisdom did
not give us any means of (easily) editing/adding/deleting these schemes. The WPSoundPalette
(WPSndPal) class is intended to do just that.
InstWPS will register the WPSoundPalette class, InstWPS -d will deregister the
class.
I have implemented the DeskMan2QuerySetup method, so the WPSoundPalette class
should respond to and use either DeskMan/2 or Object Desktop to save its data.
[Could someone please test this and get back to me with the results???]
Currently there is no help for it.
The Apply button in the edit dialog should do the same as a drag/drop operation
to the desktop.
I believe that the code is now complete, all I have to do is to finish the on-line
help file.
Please let me know what you find or any other comments.
-Chris

NOTICE for Warp Fixpak 35 Users
04-16-98
IBM has discovered a problem with the IPSRAID.ADD device driver that is contained
in previously released versions of FP35. This driver will cause machines containing
the ServeRAID II disk subsystem to fail to boot after installation of the fixpak.
We are releasing an updated version of FP35 with a new version of this file. Users
of FP35 that do not have thishardware configuration are unaffected and should not
have to install the new version. Users of ServeRaid II should only install this
new version of FP35. Here is how you can tell which version you have:
Initial FP35:
(Released in US, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Norwegian, Dutch, Italian, French
and Danish)
Diskette images dated prior to 04-15-98
README.1ST dated prior to 04-15-98
IPSRAID.ADD dated 12-05-98, 18714 bytes (listed in README.1ST or in \OS2\BOOT directory)
New FP35:
Diskette images dated on or after 04-15-98
README.1ST dated on or after 04-15-98
IPSRAID.ADD dated 03-10-98, 19922 bytes (listed in README.1ST or in \OS2\BOOT directory)
If you have already installed the initial version of FP35, you may install the
new FP35 and the driver will be replaced, or you can access the driver at http://www.pc.ibm.com/us/searchfiles.html
where you will need to enter the search string of: ServeRAID II device driver.
This will bring up the US and Japanese version of this driver to choose from as
well as the associated text file. Use the US version for all Single Byte versions
of FP35.
We have removed all of the fixpaks from our internal and external sites. We
are in the process of replacing these fixpaks with the new version. This will take
a few days to complete. When we have completed replacement of FP 35, you will be
pointed to the New FP 35.
Following Fixpak 35's have been released or re-released. Find the country you
require in the table the links below point to then select Fixpak 35 for the RSU
enabled version or the AlsoAvailable link for the diskette images.

HumbleSoft's kBootManager, a replacement for IBM's BootManager, has been updated
to version 0.36.3. This update includes the following changes:
For more information, see the kBootManager page at:

There is a new alpha version of GIMP/2 available, Asbjoern Pettersen released
version 0.3 last weekend.
It still requires the XFree86 for OS/2 package. You will find information about
installing it on the GIMP/2 page (see address below)
New features:
The new version has been greatly enhanced over the first release, so don't miss
this upgrade!
Limitations in the current release:
Unfortunately I don't know what happened to Hugues Ferland (he was working on
the PM Version of GIMP) I think we have to start again from scratch with the native
PM version. The work we have to do is porting the GTK (Gimp ToolKit) to OS/2.
The rest should not be very hard because we have an XFree-Version of GIMP running.
If you are interested in supporting us, or if you know what might have happened
to Hugues Ferland, please send a mail to ktk@netlabs.org!
You will find all about GIMP/2 at
If you don't know the OS/2 Netlabs please visit
That's it, have fun with the GIMP/2!

The following note comes from Stephane Charette, author of OS/2's DCITU (Digital
Camera Image Transfer Utility):
DCITU (Digital Camera Image Utility) for OS/2 has changed address -- the new
web page is:
http://www.evcom.net/~software/dcitu/index.html
This change comes at the same time that new features have been announced as
being in development. Discussions on DCITU can be found at the new support forum

Although BlueCAD for OS/2 is no longer distributed through Indelible Blue, there
is another source for USA sales. According to Cadware sales department:
BlueCAD is not discontinued and we are working to a new BlueCAD version. FRANK
KASPER & ASSOCIATES, INC. - 612-942-0566 VOICE - 612-942-5039 FAX. http://www.kasper-cdrom.com/
is distributing BlueCAD in the US.
CD EUROM INTERNATIONAL Inc. is importing BlueCAD in US but it's not a good reference
for end users. Frank Kasper is actually carrying the product. You can e-mail them
to know about their retail price and policy.
The current BlueCAD retail box includes both OS/2 and Win 95/NT versions; users
can choose platform and they are encouraged to try OS/2.
Visit us at http://www.cadware.it: to get trial versions, a complete list price,
ordering information and more info about CadWare and CadWare products.
APM/2 is now available. APM/2 is a commandline interface to OS/2's Advanced
Power Management, which allows you to request APM ready, standby, suspend, power
off and power on requests. Additionally, a scheduler, NLS support and a APM C/C++
toolkit is included (full source code is included too).
Does it work?
Well yes, but YMMV. Unfortunately APM may cause problems even if the calls to
the OS/2 APM subsystem return successfully; however, these should not cause more
harm than a CHKDSK during next boot.
Where to download it?
APM/2 is Freeware and available from my APM/2 homepage at the URL: http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Pines/7885/DownloadAPM2.html
Please don't upload APM/2 to other sites as, depending on how many people I see
downloading, I might do updates soon.
Feedback:
Of course feedback is welcome, I've even prepared an online form that allows
you do that in a preferred layout, at the URL: http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Pines/7885/DownloadAPM2From.html
APM/2 is NLS enabled, so if you want to do a national language translation to be
included in the package you're welcome too.

The PreRelease of Mesa 2 version 2.2 has been updated effective April 15, 1998,
and includes enhancements and fixes based on user feedback. You can try it out
- http://www.sundialsystems.com/mesa/mesa22printrofromhome.html
I tried to use Mesa 2 today and it refused to run, saying I needed to get a
refresh of the Pre-release as the code expired on April 15th. So here is a warning
for anyone else running the Mesa 2 Pre-release.
