After that, you'll have to help us out in recovering our costs to keep you on the mailing list. We are a user group, not a charity or government agency with endless sources. I think we can do better than the file you requested. I'm sending the latest version I found here - "TE_124.ZIP'. OS/2 Chalks Up Win 100 Award ═══ OS/2 Chalks Up Win 100 Award Date - March 13, 1994 From - Steve Gallagher Original Area - comp.os.os2.advocacy Origin - OS/2 connection (1:202/354) IBM'S OS/2 NAMED ONE OF THE BEST WINDOWS PRODUCTS OF THE YEAR AUSTIN, Texas, March 9, 1994 ... Catapulting to the top of the competitive operating systems category, IBM's OS/2* captured WINDOWS Magazine's "WIN 100 Award." Named one of the best Windows** products of the year, IBM's award-winning, 32-bit operating system beat Windows NT for this year's recognition. The WIN 100 Awards are selected by the editors of WINDOWS Magazine annually, recognizing the top 100 Windows hardware and software products of the year. "IBM's desktop operating system comes of age in a version that provides performance equal to (and in some cases, better than) Windows 3.1 while running Windows applications," said Jake Kirchner, the magazine's executive editor. "It's not surprising that WINDOWS Magazine chose OS/2 2.1 for a WIN 100 Award this year. OS/2 supports Windows 3.0 and 3.1 applications in Standard and Enhanced mode and offers 32-bit processing." Wally Casey, director of marketing for IBM's Personal Software Products division noted, "OS/2 has been designed as an integrating platform with capabilities to support DOS/Windows as well as OS/2 applications. OS/2's popularity continues to surge due to strong customer demand, especially with the recent introduction of OS/2 for Windows. By giving OS/2 the WIN 100 Award, the editors of WINDOWS Magazine acknowledge the industry-wide acceptance of OS/2 as the 32-bit operating system of choice, even among Windows users." OS/2, like Windows, is an operating environment for PCs. OS/2, however, not only runs DOS and Windows applications, but it runs several at the same time, and in many cases faster than in Windows. In addition, OS/2 allows users to run the latest 32-bit applications. OS/2 for Windows provides this same capability to users who already own Windows 3.1. For the price of Windows or DOS utilities, users get better performance, fewer crashes, and true multitasking. IBM's Personal Software Products division, headquartered in Austin, Texas, is an industry leader in the development of operating systems, including PC DOS and OS/2, as well as networking software and other advanced technologies. * Indicates a trademark or registered trademark of the International Business Machines Corporation. ** Indicates a trademark or registered trademark of its respected company. ═══ 1.4.2. OS/2 Wins Byte Award for Excellence ═══ OS/2 Wins Byte Magazine's 1993 Award Of Excellence Date - February 23, 1994 From - Dave Sichak Origin - OS/2 Connection (1:202/354) IBM's award-winning 32-bit PC operating system, has snapped up BYTE Magazine's "1993 Award of Excellence," bringing the total industry awards to 24 since Version 2 was shipped in March 1992. OS/2 2.1 was the only software/operating system recognized as one of the three "top vote-getters," sharing the honors with the IBM/Apple/Motorola PowerPC 601(b) and Intel's Pentium(b) processor. BYTE Magazine's 1993 Editorial Awards, which comprise Awards of Excellence, Merit and Distinction, recognize breakthrough products that set the standards for innovation and price/performance. According to BYTE, of the many computer-related products and technologies that debuted in 1993, only 71 earned the prestigious awards and, of those, only 16 are honored with Awards of Excellence. Jon Udell, BYTE's senior technical editor-at-large, lauded IBM's OS/2. "Running OS/2 2.1 on an 8 MB machine that hasn't a prayer of running Windows NT, I find that it delivers many of the same benefits: robust multithreading and multitasking, a comprehensive 32-bit API, an advanced file system, and support for Windows 3.1 software," Udell said. "Software developers have known for years that OS/2 is a far more productive environment than DOS plus Windows. With the polish and maturity of version 2.1, more and more users are discovering the same advantage." To date, OS/2 has garnered a total of 24 U.S. and international industry awards, including: "1992 Software Product of the Year," InfoWorld (March 1993) "Most Valuable Product," PC/Computing (November 1992 and 1993) "Best Desktop Operating System," PC Magazine, London (December 1993) "Best Operating System/Software," Ingram Micro's Best Seller's List (December 1993) "Best Operating System," Houston Chronicle (December 1993) "Best Chinese Information Product of 1993," Chinese Micro-Computer Extended Foundation, Taiwan (December 1993) "OS/2's popularity has exploded in recent months and is gaining industry-wide recognition as a powerful, stable and reliable 32-bit operating system," said Wally Casey, director of marketing for IBM's Personal Software Products division. "These awards prove that OS/2 lives up to its promises -- not only to corporate users, but to home and small business computer users." BYTE is a world-leading multiplatform computing authority, providing Early Product Adopters with in-depth coverage of leading products and emerging technologies. (Giangarra is the lead architect for OS/2 and Workplace OS for IBM PSP. Barnes is IBM's pitchman extraordinaire for OS/2.) One of the two men is quoted as saying OS/2 2.2 will be delivered, "by June at the latest." (The article does not specify which of the two it is quoting.) The features mentioned for 2.2 in the article include shrink-to-fit 4 MB ("runs well in 4 MB"), optional support for C2 security and SMP, and 3-D effects and more color instead of "that neutral, soothing but dog-ugly interface." Software News ═══ New From Info-Zip Pegasus Resource Monitor & Tools ═══ 1.6.1. New From Info-Zip ═══ New From Info-Zip Date - February 14, 1994 From - Greg Roelofs Info-ZIP is pleased to announce (at long last) the public release of version 5.1 of its UnZip utility. UnZip is an extraction utility for archives compressed in .zip format (also called "zipfiles"). Although highly compatible with PKWARE's PKZIP and PKUNZIP utilities for MS-DOS (in addition to Info-ZIP's own Zip program), our primary objectives have been portability and non-MSDOS functionality. This version of UnZip has been ported to a wide array of hardware--from micros to supercomputers--and operating systems: Unix (many flavors), VMS, OS/2, MSDOS (+ Windows), NT, TOPS-20 (partly), AmigaDOS, Atari TOS, Macintosh and Human68k. UnZip features not found in PKUNZIP include source code; default extraction of directory trees (with a switch to defeat this, rather than the reverse); VMS, Macintosh and OS/2 extended file attributes; and, of course, the ability to run under most of your favorite operating systems. Plus, it's free. :-) New features in this version include the ability to extract to a directory other than the current one; the inclusion of Zip-Info as an integral part of UnZip; wildcard zipfiles; full Amiga, Atari, Mac, NT and Human68K support (and partial TOPS-20 support); and unzip ports to most systems. UnZip itself still does not have the capability to extract zipfiles read from stdin, nor to extract multi-part archives. Both of these features are planned for the next version. The OS/2 version still supports extended attributes, of course. Both 16- and 32-bit executables have been uploaded to ftp-os2.cdrom.com (unz51x1.exe and unz51x2.exe), as well as the complete source code archive (unzip51.zip). ═══ 1.6.2. Pegasus Resource Monitor & Tools ═══ Pegasus Resource Monitor & Pegasus Tools Date - March 08, 1994 From - Frank V. Castellucci The Pegasus Resource Monitor and Pegasus Tools provide professional resource and performance monitoring tools for the OS/2 2.x platform. All the listed systems take advantage of the OS/2 2.x flat memory model, multithreading, and CUA'91 PM controls. In addition, WPS install utilities and on-line documentation accompany each product. [The] Pegasus Collection Engine ... is the heart of the Pegasus System. This is where all resource measurements are collected directly from the operating system itself instead of the pulse idle thread and DosQProcStatus approximation techniques. This means that the Pegasus System can report valid detailed measurements from the following resource centers: CPU,IRQ Paging and Memory Subsystem Physical and Logical IO Subsystems ( File, Comm, Print ) Cache Managers ( FAT and HPFS ) Scheduler and Task Manager In addition, the Pegasus collection engine works on timed intervals and does not expend resources between samples. Recent changes to the collection engine have reduced overall utilization by 60% or better on non-math co-processor machines! ═══ 1.7. San Diego Teamos2 News ═══ San Diego CompUSA OS/2 Day Report ═══ 1.7.1. San Diego CompUSA OS/2 Day Report ═══ San Diego CompUSA OS/2 Day Report By Dave Sichak Area - Fidonet Teamos2 Origin - OS/2 Connection BBS Mira Mesa, California (619) 549-4215 (1:202/354) It may be a week late, but I didn't want to let the recognition go by the wayside. Here's a short report on CompUSA Sunday in San Diego at our Kearny Mesa store - I have no knowledge of how the event went over in the Rancho Bernardo store near Rte 78 & I-15. Alann Lopes, one of our user group members and local software consultant was on hand this fine Sunday and led the efforts. We had a nice demo machine and had a great assortment of apps to show the folks. On top of that, Alann had a connection to the Internet to hold the attention of folks even more. Also assisting us at the event was Clark Fagot, another OS/2 fan. Michael Cummings, the sysop of the Zzyxx Road BBS in town stopped by and helped out a bit and got to see the "hard copy" of our newsletter for the first time. Wonder who was manning the bbs while he was out circulating? Peter Schulz of PCX and BakUpWiz fame stopped by and was wearing a smile - he seemed rather pleased with the promotion that was going on and related how re-orders had been placed for more product to meet the demand. Several CompUSA employees stopped by and offered some words to the effect that they hope this means we'll see more OS/2 stuff in the stores. Is that nice to hear or what? The products on display this weekend were: Performance 2.1 Plus Watcom VX-REXX FaxPM Golden CommPass HyperAccess/5 CorelDraw for OS/2 PFS:Works Power Translator (spanish) Link Right Central Point Anti-Virus DeScribe (upgrade) Lotus Smart Suite ($499, $364.99, $299) OPen Shutter BakUpWiz Source Link CA-Super Project WordPerfect (full-blown retail price) Freelance Graphics (upgrade) Stacker for OS/2 & DOS Lotus 1-2-3 (upgrade) They took down a price list I had seen posted last weekend, tho the prices were on shelf stickers, but not all items had prices. I do know that several other products I had seen the previous weeks were gone - such as Window Washer, Draw, FootPrint Works, Faxworks, etc. We had some sticky pads with the OS/2 logo on it to pass out, OS/2 pens that were snatched up by all, a few dozen copies of the past two months of our user group newsletter to help people continue to find out more about OS/2 ( I have a feeling we'll see a few more people this month.). I think it might be helpful if a lot of us put up some of the questions we got from folks to help us prepare for future events - it helps to understand what others want to know about OS/2 and may even help the marketing types who get paid for it to know where they need to improve on getting consumer awareness / attention. The most common question I got was would OS/2 be a good thing to use even if they were just using DOS or Windows apps. I of course pointed out the advantages of such a situation. Others wanted to know if their CD ROM or sound board would work with OS/2. I had a couple of extra copies of the OS/2 Hardware compatability handbook so we used that quite a bit and one copy was left with the CompUSA folks who seemed very appreciative of that. Perhaps that might be something that IBM should make standard in providing the stores? Ooops, editorializing. Others wanted to know about video drivers for SVGA. Me? I'm in the dark on that - I only have VGA and all I know is that it works. But it gives me a chance to understand what the issues are out there. We always had a crowd around the machine - by the end of my stay there, I had dry mouth and was sore from all the talking. And I did see more than several copies of OS/2 and other software make their way to the altar of the almighty dollar - the register lines. As for the other CompUSA store in town - I do know that their end of aisle display was limited to OS/2 only - the other vendor apps were just around the corner in a single area on three shelves, though some of the Lotus apps were scattered elsewhere. Here's to Alann, Clark, Peter, Michael and the others who made the day a nice success in San Diego. And that's the way it was, Sunday, March 6, 1994. On the beat...in the streets... reporter on the loose.... Cheers, =8:|)ave ═══ 1.8. User Group Introduction ═══ User Group Directory Grows to Over 145 Listings! The User Group Directory keeps growing! And we keep trying to stay ahead of the game on changes. I've recovered from my faux pas from about a month or so ago, learning firsthand of the power of the "del *.* command. We're using R:Base 4.5 Plus for OS/2 to keep the user group database. By doing so, I can more readily make sure we have the most current, available public information and update the list easier, too. But the best reason is that I can use the "report" feature to create the code I need to create the INF version. Clever, eh? We publish only information that has been published in: Fidonet, CompuServe, Internet & Issue 1 of IBM's "Personal Software" newsletter, which listed OS/2 user groups. I have also been lucky enough to stumble upon a good number of newsletters by attending Comdex and APCUG events. I pulled additional information when I found it from these publications. The list also provides interested OS/2 vendors with a handy, easy way to target potential future presentations of their products. I've got these meetings listed in a calendar format in our hard copy. In a future INF version, I may figure out how to do that, too. We try to list known OS/2 User Groups whenever we get the information. Of course, we can't be responsible if the information proves to be unreliable -- you, the reader are our best source of this information. ═══ 1.8.2. The Phoenix PC Users Group will host a demonstration of IBM's award winning PC operating system, OS/2 2.1, on Monday, April 11, 1994. Admission to the event, which will be held at Phoenix Symphony Hall, 225 East Adams, is free. The doors will open at 6:00 p.m. and the demonstration will begin at 6:30 p.m. The event is sponsored by the Phoenix PC User Group with the cooperation of IBM and will be hosted by David Barnes of IBM's Personal Software Products group who conducts OS/2 product demonstrations and competitive "shoot-outs" to sellout crowds of customers, industry and user groups worldwide. The demonstration will highlight some of today's hottest personal computing features including multimedia and voice recognition, and showcase why the top rated OS/2 is one of today's more popular software products. Barnes will show how OS/2 can run existing DOS and Windows programs effortlessly, efficiently and simultaneously. Barnes will demonstrate OS/2's voice recognition capabilities, object-oriented Workplace Shell graphical user interface, and functions such as cut and paste, drag and drop, and more. The demonstration will provide a closer look at OS/2's Multimedia Presentation Manager, exhibiting why OS/2 is the strongest multimedia platform available for today's PCs. And, the audience won't miss a keystroke of computing action, as Barnes' computer monitor will be projected onto a 15 by 20-foot screen. Since the OS/2 2.0 introduction in April 1992, the number of OS/2 user groups and special interest groups has exploded from just a few to almost 200 today. PC users who want to learn about exploiting their current hardware, saving time and increasing productivity in a powerful, stable and reliable operating environment won't want to miss this inside look at IBM's OS/2 operating system, which has topped the software best seller list for months. OS/2 2.1, the leading 32-bit PC operating system, runs new and existing DOS, Windows and OS/2 applications. It offers users such features as multitasking, which allows two or more applications to run at the same time, and a stable environment, which keeps the system running even if one application "crashes." IBM's Personal Software Products division, located in Austin, Texas, is an industry leader in the development of operating systems including PC DOS and OS/2, as well as networking software and other advanced software technologies. Tips, Tricks & Solutions ═══ Weaning From Windows DOS Sessions Q&A ═══ 1.9.1. Weaning from Windows ═══ Date - February 08, 1994 From - Abimbola Olowofoyeku Subject - Seamless Windows I have just uploaded SEAMWIN4.ZIP to ftp-os2.cdrom.com. This is only a "consolidation" package, fully described below. Full documentation for the program itself can be found in SEAMWIN.DOC the other .DOC files only detail the changes. The idea of SEAMWIN (a program to speed up the launching of seamless Win-OS/2 sessions) seems to have become popular. Version 1.00 was quickly followed by version 2.00, which used about 9kb less memory. This version presented some problems for some users with Diamond and ATI video cards. Version 3.00 solved most of those problems, but some people still have problems with it (again, some Diamond cards seem to be the culprits). I have no idea why some people should have problems with any version of SEAMWIN, because they are all programs that do ABSOLUTELY NOTHING - but then there you are. I have decided to package all 3 versions together in this release, because version 1.00 is no longer available on any ftp site. The only advantages of versions 2.00 and 3.00 over version 1.00 is that they use about 9kb less memory, and less system resources. If neither SEAMWIN2.EXE nor SEAMWIN3.EXE has given you any problem, then you should use one of them, and you do not need to download this package. ═══ 1.9.2. DOS Sessions Q&A ═══ DOS Fullscreen to Window Transfering FAT Files to HPFS Drive Changing Window Size Optimizing HPFS Performance ═══ 1.9.2.1. DOS Fullscreen to Window ═══ DOS Sessions Tips DOS Fullscreen to Window From - Craig Swanson Subject - Dos Programs Date - January 1994 Origin - OS/2 Connection (1:202/354) BM> How can I change these [full screen sessions] so that I can call them up in a Dos window so that I can put them into the background. Can't find how to change from full to window. Use the "Session" page in the settings notebook for the program. To open the settings notebook, click the right mouse button on the program icon. Then click the left button on the arrow next to "Open" on the pop-up menu. Then click the left button on "Settings" and you will see the notebook appear. ═══ 1.9.2.2. Transferring FAT Files to HPFS Drive ═══ Transferring FAT Files to HPFS Drive From - Craig Swanson Subject - Dos Programs Date - January 1994 Origin - OS/2 Connection (1:202/354) BM> I have two HDs - one for DOS & Boot Manager, the other totally HPFS for OS/2. If I want to install a new DOS program to use only in OS/2, or to transfer DOS programs from the DOS drive to the OS/2 drive so that I no longer need MSDOS on my machine, how do I do this? Just copy the program directories and files to 8.3 type file names on the HPFS drive. If you are installing the program from scratch, just install as usual. There are almost no DOS programs that mind being run on HPFS drives as long as you use FAT style 8.3 file names and directory names for the files and directories they need to access. ═══ 1.9.2.3. Changing Window Size ═══ Changing Window Size From - Craig Swanson Subject - Dos Programs Date - January 1994 Origin - OS/2 Connection (1:202/354) BM> Second, when running a Dos program in a OS/2 Dos window the prog thinks it is running in a full window and overflows the window. Is an elongated window and cascading the only way to run MSDOS programs? Will they adjust into a window if you use TILE? If you reposition a window how do you make it stay where you put it the next time you call it up? I've use the Shift, Ctrl, and Alt keys when moving with mouse, but can't seem to fix it's location. I can't find anything in the manual about fixing a window to a new location. Do you mean that a small window (i.e., one that is not maximized and has scroll bars) is not big enough to show the entire contents of a typical DOS program screen? Drag the border to make it bigger or click on the maximize button in the upper right hand corner of the window at top. I'm not aware of a way to fix the window position directly as you request. ═══ 1.9.2.4. Optimizing HPFS Performance ═══ Optimizing HPFS Performance From - Craig Swanson Subject - Dos Programs Date - January 1994 Origin - OS/2 Connection (1:202/354) RM> Whenever you have time, can you be kind enough and let me know what would be the best top performance parameters for my system. There is no strictly "best" setting for any caches simply based on hardware. You can only find the "best" setting for your system by trying various settings and using the computer the way you would normally use it to see what settings work best. In general, you should first decide how much RAM you can afford for a software-based disk cache. I wouldn't use more than 8MB for software disk caching on your system and would probably use a 4MB software cache given that would leave 16MB RAM left over for other things. Since you have a hardware-based disk cache, there may be advantages to using very short lazy write times (or no lazy write at all) and letting the hardware cache reorder the writes for maximum throughput. Keep in mind that with HPFS386 you can set different settings for each partition. So for a partition that is used for temporary files and spooling you might set longer lazy write times than for a partition that has valuable data that is read a lot more often than it is modified. RM> The other day while scanning other boards I saw the same HPFS386 zip file, but spelled differently. When I unzipped the file there were different dates between the uncompressed files. which one should be the valid zipped file? Do a LOCATE for HPFS386 and see what files turn up. I think that IBM386FS.ZIP is the newest one. In general it is usually (but certainly not always) better to use newer versions as they will probably have fewer bugs as long as no major features were added. RM> The following is what I put in my config.sys. Is this okay, not enough, too much, or doesn't make sense: IFS=c:\hpfs386\HPFS386.IFS C:\HPFS386\HPFS200.386 /C:4096 /AUTOCHECK:C: /USEALLMEM The /AUTOCHECK parameter should have a ':' after the drive letters. For example "/AUTOCHECK:CDEF" would automatically run CHKDSK at boot time on drives C, D, E, and F if they are found to be in an improperly shut down state. A 4MB cache on a machine with 20MB RAM sounds reasonable to me. RM> I don't know what the Maxage and BufferIdle are for [e.g.]: RUN = C : \ HPFS386 \ CACHE386 . EXE/ LAZY : OFF/ MAXAGE :C:5000 /BUFFERIDLE:C:1000 MAXAGE controls how long written data can remain in the cache before being written to disk. Setting it high gives a large opportunity to reorder writes and accumulate writes to optimize disk performance, but it does risk loosing data if the power fails or the machine crashes. Personally I would suggest MAXAGE times of between 5000 and 10000 to be reasonably conservative, but if you have any drives that are used only for paging, spooling, and/or temporary files you can set the MAXAGE parameter very high because loosing any of that type of data is no big deal. 60000 might be good for those types of drives. BUFFERIDLE controls how aggressive HPFS386 will be at writing data out to disk when the file system isn't being used. Setting it higher helps preserve responsiveness to read requests by delaying physical writes to the disk driver until the file system hasn't been used by any programs for some period of time. This of course does increase risk, however. A setting between 1000 and 3000 seems reasonable to me. Opinions on cache settings are going to vary widely depending on the machine, the type of software used, and most importantly how much of a risk taker you are. If you don't care about risking the loss of data, set MAXAGE very high and bump up BUFFERIDLE a bit to help improve performance. ═══ 1.10. Evan Champion has also posted a "wish list" for OS/2. I've known of John's for quite a long time and have pestered him in the past to send me the whole thing. Guess what I got in my email last month? OS/2 2.x Wish List! January 10, 1994 John Faughnan OS/2 FidoNet Wish List UPDATE! The Wish List is an edited compilation of many ideas and requests from subscribers to the FidoNet OS/2 echo. Portions of it are periodically posted on the echo; it's too large to post in its entirety. Anyone wishing a complete copy of the list please contact me at 4867991@mcimail.com. Please post this list wherever it might be of value, and particularly forward it to persons involved in OS/2 development. Contributors to this list are not individually recognized. Thanks to everyone who's worked to make a good working environment better! CONTENTS BASE FEATURES CONNECTIVITY DOS SUPPORT DRIVERS AND HARDWARE INSTALLATION AND SETUP INTERFACE COMMAND LINE (OS/2) INTERFACE GRAPHICAL (WPS) MULTIMEDIA UTILITIES and APPLETS MISCELLANEOUS (THE TOP FIVE WISHES are preceded by a *.) ═══ 1.10.2. Base Features ═══ Base Features Fidonet OS/2 Wish List - Part I Compiled By John Faughnan 4867991@mcimail.com Escanaba, Michigan BASE FEATURES 1. An official IBM email address to send wish lists to! 2. * Provide a new 32 bit file system for OS/2 that addresses cache size/file size limits (2GB file size limit), EA 64K size limit, 8.3 filename mapping, and true symbolic links, and SUBST mapping of drive letters/names to paths. It should provide commonality to removable media as well (a subset of FS for floppies). 3. Incorporate features of Toronto Virtual File System, including a virtual drive letter and IBM's High Performance Optical File System (HPOFS). File system security should be an optional add-on. 4. * Support for extended character sets and foreign languages within all PM applications through the API. Unicode support. 5. * Better memory management by the operating system. More efficient use of system memory, more sophisticated memory compaction and distribution to applications. 6. Allow drive spanning, so that file(s) can be allocated across multiple drives. 7. Be able to assign any letter or text string to represent any drive. In particular be able to assign letter Z: to cd-rom, MO drives, etc. 8. The WPS file system should allow shadows of objects stored on offline media. Referencing these shadows should create a request for the offline media. 9. Provide a single boot diskette that will allow one to revise all system configuration settings, including video settings, from the boot disk. 10. Desynchronized message queues for PM apps. - OLE 2.0 support for PM apps. 11. True Type support for PM apps as well as Windows apps. 12. 32-bit HPFS, PMWIN.DLL 13. 32-bit printer drivers all across (currently, only the Postscript Driver is 32-bit, the rest are all 16-bit). 14. Provide something like Uni-driver architecture like Windows to ease printer driver development. 15. Built in file compression IFS. 16. User profile storage so that each user of a computer can have his/her own WPS settings and desktop. This would require logging in each time the machine is used. These should be secure. Allow each user to also define default keyboard status, such as num lock off or on. 17. Add a key press sequence that on startup causes chkdsk to be run on all partitions. 18. Ability to set each session's "shift key status", or a system default for each session, so that NumLock can be turned on for each session, rather than being done manually (again, without requiring an extra util). 19. A quick Cut and Paste. Instead of click on Settings, click on Mark, select area, click on Copy, and then go to the other window and click on Paste, it would be nice if there was, say, Shift-Alt LMB to do this, something that doesn't require so many clicks. 20. Use Ctrl-C, Ctrl-V, and Ctrl-X for copy, paste, and cut (as an option for the user). 21. Enable the clipboard for cutting and pasting from PM dialog boxes (for entry into fields used by a PM app for paths, settings, etc.). 22. Cut and paste for DOS sessions that can append text, or omit CR... 23. Be able to edit the paste buffer 24. Add import and export features to the clipboard viewer applet - provide an the option within settings menus for an object to have no default values; i.e., on a double click just pop up the select actions menu rather than executing anything. 25. Some objects have no preferred action. 26. Add "/?" command line parameter to *all* OS/2 and DOS commands (internal and external) to provide a quick lookup, rather than requiring a full PM session opened to check parameters for commands. Also implement /Q for quick format. 27. Hotkey or key-click combo or other shortcut to temporarily alter an application's priority or background process. (e.g., Ctrl-Alt Shift-S -Speed program to Max Priority for 5 sec) 28. When dragging multiple icons, they should maintain their relative positions, rather than being "arranged" at the end of the move. 29. 32 bit text-mode API and a text-shell (permit selective installation) 30. API translation tools: programs can call the API to do translation, such as: a. QuickTime to Ultimedia b. Word to WordPerfect etc. 31. API should support translation modules that can be added easily (DLLs?) from other vendors. 32. Sort the Task List, and try to differentiate between multiple OS2 or VDM windows (i.e. by displaying the running app name, or current default directory) 33. When a floppy is read through the WPS object, don't always write a hidden file to the floppy, and manage a locked floppy more elegantly. 34. * The OS/2 system configuration should not be accessed and changed through the ascii config.sys file. This is far too vulnerable to naive manipulation, and even in expert hands a typing error in the config.sys can create an unstable system configuration. System settings for OS/2 and OS2DOS should be incorporated into OS2SYS.INI and OS2.INI. These settings should be accessible through an API, and changeable through a WPS notebook interface. To maintain compatibility with older applications an ascii config.sys would have to be maintained (perhaps limited to path statements and the like). On bootup OS/2 would read and parse the ascii file, then ask the user to confirm that the new config.sys should be adopted, then write the changes through the API to the binary file. 35. Ability to load OS/2 drivers for a single OS/2 session only. 36. * Create a set of system PM utilities for maintaining INI files and EAs, including rebuilding corrupted files (saving as much as possible), exporting portions, editing out old and unused data, transporting and saving the desktop, etc. 37. Add a key press sequence that on startup cleans up INI files without requiring complete ini file replacement. Then it launches the system utilities for maintaining INI files. 38. Fix the font situation with the confusing OFM description file that is not supported by commercial font vendors. Provide at least a utility to convert PFMs to OFMs, or switch to PFMs. ═══ 1.10.3. Connectivity ═══ Connectivity Fidonet OS/2 Wish List - Part I Compiled By John Faughnan 4867991@mcimail.com Escanaba, Michigan CONNECTIVITY 1. More networks drivers (NEx) for LAPS 2. Optional integrated 32 bit version of IBM's TCP/IP package, 3. Encompassing TCP (and UDP, &c.), IP (and ICMP, &c.), TELNET, FTP, SLIP (for serial comms using modems), SMTP, NNTP and X11R5 (local server for displaying output from X apps on other machines only) 4. Include basic peer-to-peer networking ability (Mac Sys 7 equivalent) - support AppleTalk networks 5. Built in TCP/IP support as a minimal subset of full TCP/IP package - an optional package for SLIP/PPP tcp/ip connections only, including support for Windows tcp/ip apps. ═══ 1.10.4. DOS Support ═══ DOS Support Fidonet OS/2 Wish List - Part I Compiled By John Faughnan 4867991@mcimail.com Escanaba, Michigan DOS SUPPORT 1. More comprehensive help for DOS Settings, and all components of config.sys. 2. Help that identifies function of ALL files included in OS/2 base system. 3. DOS migration database could be improved, should also be extensible by downloading additions from IBM BBS. 4. Scalable DOS windows as in DV/X. Use Adobe scalable fonts. Better ways to force ill behaved DOS apps to print! 5. Support for SVGA resolution in a VDM window. ═══ 1.10.5. Drivers and Hardware ═══ Drivers and Hardware Fidonet OS/2 Wish List - Part I Compiled By John Faughnan 4867991@mcimail.com Escanaba, Michigan DRIVERS and HARDWARE 1. In future releases of OS/2, if it is legally possible, include all freely available 3rd-party drivers for screen, printers, CD-ROM and other devices. If necessary, include appropriate disclaimer(s). This is particularly feasible with CD-ROM distribution, for diskette distribution, size limitations may require that these be ordered separately. The order forms should be included with OS/2 and all drivers should be available from a central source. ═══ 1.10.6. Installation and Setup ═══ Installation and Setup Fidonet OS/2 Wish List - Part I Compiled By John Faughnan 4867991@mcimail.com Escanaba, Michigan INSTALLATION AND SETUP 1. * Installation and Deinstallation APIs 2. Standard APIs for installing, moving, and deleting programs. System should maintain a list of all files loaded during install, deleting can then remove all parts of the program, including files put in other drives/directories. Uninstallation should also restore prior *.INI and other initialisation files. LZW compression APIs should be included for moving files from installation diskettes. 3. Improve the documentation and methodology for installing video adapters and changing video modes for OS/2 and WinOS2. 4. 800x600x256 for 512k video cards 5. FDISK should be _greatly_ simplified. 6. Include a diagnostic/installation utility that could inform the user of any IRQ conflicts such as the common COM1/COM3 and IRQ7/SB that many new users experience. This should run under DOS and be able to test systems for compatibility with OS/2, and could be freely distributed to all BBS. It could also examine the system, ask the user questions, and optimize the config.sys file. 7. As well as improved selective installation, with detailed descriptions of all modules available via a help function, also implement a selective de-install for system features that can be accessed via the setup functions. 8. One should not _have_ to type a path name _anywhere_ in the WPS environment, including the spooler path. Paths should be chosen using the Find dialog, although that particular dialog could be improved in many ways. 9. Initial installation should support (and encourage) creating a partition for the base operating system and installing the desktop, spooler and swapper in another partition. The base partition should be optionally created to a recommended size from FDISK (click on button called: create OS2 system partition). 10. During installation with Dual Boot allow for pre-existing SHELL and COMSPEC configurations other than "C:\\COMMAND.COM". 11. The order of executables displayed in the migration file (when adding files not listed in the migration database) is difficult to discern (sort by path). Choose another sort order or widen the display window. Also the migrate applet does not allow one to migrate a file if there are NO applications on the hard drive that can be recognized by the migration applet. 12. Allow one to set defaults that apply to a class or sub-class of objects. A global setting might cause an OS/2 or DOS window to start maximized. Other system defaults: Maintain Sort Order, default Open type. 13. Allow one to readily move desktop setups between installs, including icons and program references. (A subset of DeskMan/2 features should be a part of the OS.) 14. Better support for hardware revisions. When one adds a different serial card, video card, hard drive, etc. the OS/2 reconfiguration process could be made easier. 15. During installation there's the ability to revise the config.sys file through the WPS OS/2 Setup and Installation tool. This is not available after installation. It should be. (See also 'wish' on the elimination of the ascii config.sys file in favor of an API based config.sys with a binary editing tool.) 16. Improve on MIGRATE. Let us open a newly installed object and click on settings, migrate, and have it set up the parameters. 17. Fix MIGRATE so one can ADD a program not in the database even if migrate cannot find ANY programs to migrate, or without going through the migrate search. ═══ 1.11. I felt my chest swell, and the buttons on my shirt began to pop off. Noticing the commotion, Lois came back to my aisle, shouting, "Clark, what's happening". OS/2 For Non-Nerds even made my pants longer; I was a former geek. "I read OS/2 For Non-Nerds in one hour. Now I'm not only an OS/2 pro, but I lost that nerdy nasal laugh. I gave up my pocket calculator and even got more dates that I can handle, " claims one reformed geek. "This book saved my job." When I started working at my company, says Kevin, they stuck me in the mail room. I just couldn't seem to do anything right. I sent packages to the wrong address. I lost the key to the postage meter. I was on the verge of being fired. Then one day, a copy of OS/2 For Non-Nerds came through on its way to the corporate library. I picked up a copy and read part of it during my lunch hour. By the next day, I was working so efficiently, my boss promoted me. Now, in just six months time, I am president of the company." Famous Manhattan actor/screen writer spotted hiding behind a copy of OS/2 For Non-Nerds in a posh New York restaurant. ═══ 1.12. BBS Introduction ═══ This listing is for the BBS junkie in you who needs to have a phone bill treat once in a while . Or bored to death while you're travelling. Our listing is based on a rather extensive listing put together by Dave Fisher of OS/2 type Bulletin Boards. Space limits this month prevent us from listing all the details he has for each BBS, but we've tried to include a couple from every state in the US (Notice and hint to you sysops...not all states are represented.) and a few foreign countries, too. Dave Fisher's list is a compilation of OS/2 BBS's across the world. If you wish to make an addition or correction to his list, he's asked that you please netmail your BBS information to Dave Fisher at LiveNet, 1:170/110@fidonet.org. For the newsletter, I've sorted the in alphabetical order by Country for the international ones and by state for those in the USA to make it easier to find one close to you. His file has other details related to these BBS's but we didn't have room, okay? The file we're using showed that the last update was September 7, 1992. Does anyone know if this list of his is being kept up to date? I hope to expand it more next month; ran out of time. But I've got his list in a database right now and I'll be able to code that list a lot easier next month. Hope you find this inclusion useful. Large phone bills are not my fault...!!! ═══ 1.13.2.
