OS/2 Warp News Service Brasil

Portuguese Version

The First Edition

Well, this is my first time here for the Brazilian Report in OS/2 CONNECT , and I hope that this is just the begining of a strong relationship with Brazilian people (and everyone around the world).

Brazil is a great country with some problems in its administration, but this is not the point. The point is that the number of OS/2 users here is low, but increases every day, and this section on OS/2 CONNECT is just another step on the long road to make this great system even more known in my country (Brazil!).

I hope everyone enjoys this new section, and stay with us!

OS/2 Brasil: The Brasilian User Group

OS/2 Brasil is the page of the largest user group in Brazil, and its members are spread over the entire country.

The OS/2 Brasil page has many useful things like a Tucows/2 Mirror, tips, tricks, a programs page and others... Stay tuned on it, but remember: It is all in Portuguese, and only in Portuguese.

OS/2 Warp News Service Brasil

The OS/2 Warp News Service Brasil is the only page of OS/2 news in Brazil. It is in Portuguese, and is written by me, and I try to make it a bit more useful than a simple news page, giving my coments, and some other services, like a Compatible Hardware page and other useful things.

This is interesting for everyone to visit this page, mainly because I "search" on every news service for OS/2 in the net and translate everything to Portuguese and, of course, add news sent by users, that usually are not in a page on the net.

OS/2 Brazilian News

The first and more strange news is that IBM Brasil drops OS/2 Warp 4 user support. Well, this is not the real truth at all, because they only follow the contract. The support ended in 1997, December 31st, as said on the manuals, but they don't forget the user. The information that I received officialy from IBM Brasil is that the support will be made by a third party enterprise, and said that everyone will be warned when the enterprise is selected too.

As IBM Corp dropped the VoiceType for OS/2 project, our hopes of a Portuguese VoiceType died with the project. This is terrible, because I think that no changes have to be made on actual VoiceType, it is really perfect, but the lack of a Portuguese version will be a sure of a limitation on the sells of the next versions of OS/2 here, as seen on the 4th version. This is bad news, but I had to talk about it.

This is the fresh news: WGet 1.5 Beta 9 is out! Compiled by Ivan F. Martinez, this is the newest WGet available for OS/2. Wget is a program that makes mirrors of sites, as well as do FTP and HTTP downloads with crash recovery on both types of download. It has many features and can become a good program to be used as a download helper on Navigator/2.

Here is some older, but important news...

FixPak 5 Br was released, after a long time without updates on this type of service. You can find it on Espírito Santo OS/2 User Group FTP, thanks to André Carraretto for it.

Banco Do Brasil, the largest bank in Brazil, changes its platform to OS/2 Warp. This is a very good news, because it means a lot of registered copies of OS/2 sold here, and means that IBM will be looking more carefully at this country, once it has a BIG consumer here. I've noticed too that some other banks are changing to OS/2 here, after Banco Do Brasil changes... At least, Bamerindos (now called HSBC Bamerindus) changed to OS/2 too.

Good Brazilian Page To Visit...

Macarlo's Site is actually the best of Brazilian users site. It has tips, hints, documents, programs and a lot of things that everyone must have in their hard disks and in their heads too... (-: This page can be visited without any problem by Brazilian and non-Brazilian people, once it has some pieces in Portuguese, but it is in English on the most pieces.

Suggestions, News, Everything You Want To Say!

Daniel Jorge Caetano is a student of Civil Engeneering at the Universidade de Sao Paulo (USP). He has nine years of extensive experience in the use of OS/2. He is member of the Student's Association on the University, and writes the "computers" section of the Association Publication. Daniel has solid knowledge in C programming and lots of knowledge on "the way that the operating systems works." He was a member of the "former" Sao Paulo OS/2 User Group, Brazil. He supported OS/2, for a period of time, on STI BBS, the 2nd largest BBS/Internet Provider in Brazil, and actually is "reformulating" the OS/2 Section on that BBS and creating an FTP on that provider, as well as doing an Internet Access Kit for OS/2 to be included on the CD distributed for the provider's users.
