Sorry, not an answer, some questions: I have an IBM Personal Computer 300PL with what is succinctly described as an S3Trio 3D card. It works very well indeed with OS/2. However, I haven't been able to get XFree86 to recognise it. I haven't downloaded the latest XFree86 (3.3.5) because I am confused as to whether it would support my S3Trio 3D card. I need more information: 1. The exact description of my S3Trio 3D card. I am right in assuming from jhong's post that it would be the PG128? 2. If I took the top off my case, could I verify that it was the PG128 by looking at the integrated chip? 3. How do I get the top back on again? (just kidding, I'll get some strong bloke to do it for me) 4. After all the hassle, would XFree86 3.5.5 actually support my S3Trio 3D card? Unless they are IBM XGA adapters, there must be a hierarchy, such as VGA and mono, or VGA and EGA. In the case of VGA and mono, only text output can appear on the mono display, either in VIO or VDM operation, and, of course, one must have the software to be able to use this capability. I currently have SVGA and mono with Warp 4, and have programs which use both displays simultaneously. I also run single DOS programs which display text only, and can run them on the mono display, while running other programs simultaneously on the SVGA display. Although I have not seen it, IBMer's have told me that a hierarchy is not necessary with two XGA displays, but this requires programs which can address the different output ports of the two display adapters. In one other use, I have heard of one company which makes a multi-port display adapter with will allow up to 4 SVGA displays. This requires special drivers for the board, and also special programs. Perhaps if you could be more specific about what you would like to see, it would be possible to give you a better answer. ----------------------------------------------------------- Fred Springfield for e-mail remove 'xxx' Plymouth, MN ----------------------------------------------------------- --- WtrGate+ v0.93.p7 sn 165 * Origin: Usenet: Professional Network Services (pro-ns.net) (1:109/42) +----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ From: jpolt@bradnet.legend.co.uk 23-Oct-99 11:49:08 To: All 23-Oct-99 10:32:23 Subj: Monitor capabilities From: jpolt@bradnet.legend.co.uk (John Poltorak) How do I determine the capabilities of a 'no-name' monitor? Norris" I've discovered an odd problem with my ATI setup. The system works normally with the ATI drivers in almost all cases, but I can make it hang without fail by starting a fullscreen OS/2 session with a working directory specified. After rebooting I find it had trapped in VIDEOPMI.DLL. The hang isn't a whole-system hang, for example the rest of the family can keep right on web surfing through the firewall on this machine, but the only keys which still work on it are Ctrl-Alt-Del. Fullscreen and windowed OS/2, DOS and Win-OS2 otherwise all work normally. The ATI drivers are the "latest", being as they're the only ones available, and they're off the CD that came with it, labelled release 435. The system is W4 with FP12. I've no idea when this started, nor even if it has been like it for the whole 18 months or so since I installed the ATI card; I don't use fullscreen OS/2 sessions very often! I'm interested to know if anyone else has experienced this, and even more interested to know if anyone has a solution (other than using IBM's or Scitech's GRADD drivers, which I have chosen not to use at this time for performance and stability reasons respectively). The described routine leaves something behind. If you reinstall the same sdd version the number of days left picks up where it was left. Why I'm asking is that after uninstalling sdd I've been trying nvidia's drivers as well as gradds and I can't set the refresh rate other than 60. In the box where you choose your monitor one alternative is Scitech Display Doctor which for sure has been uninstalled. I'm not going to use a beta version, uninstall it after 21 days and then reinstall it to avoid buying it, instead, I'd like to try if the presence of some remnants of sdd adversely affects the installation of the other drivers. Sdd has some bugs, in my case Winos2 hangs and some small flickering on the screen when poking around with the mouse cursor inside a window. That's why I want to use the gradd drivers, the higher refresh rates OTOH are why I use sdd. So, if someone knows how to *totally* eradicate sdd from the system please tell! The only arg where I get a working video is "gen" - so no 2X. But absolutely useable.!! I run 1024x768x65K... 1) I like to have "mode 80,102" in my prompts, which I prefer to have two or three of at the same time, on the same screen. But something gets confused when I use the clipboard in these sessions, because they extend to the buttom of the WP, and that was not where I wanted them to be. I have tried 800x600 - same result. 2) In the former paragraph I wrote "on the same screen", I did this because I use SkyScraber to give me a number(8) of different WPs. But SkyScraber can't handle these prompt-sessions correct either. When I try to "restore", it garbles up these sessions. 3) From time to time text seems to disappear in Lotus Wordpro/Approach, but normally some patience, or use of PgUp/PgDn, solves it. The two first remarks came alive after GRADD driver, it wasn't there in os/2-vga mode. The third one came with "S3Trio etc", it wasn't there with ET6000. On the first download of headers I got and read about 400.. But on a refresh there were 1345 which I haven't managed to tackle yet. Many are refering to earlier betas and the problems that I am having are with beta 8. My current (and temporary) setup is on an Intel Altserver dual 166Mhz pentium EISA motherboard with 32 meg of ram running 2 scsi drives. The monitor is probably only vga and the video card is built in and has one meg of memory, it is one of the listed cirrus cards. Fixpack 10 and other upgrades from the warpup cd from this summer. Scitech ran for a while but only at 16 colors, which wasn't the problem, but somewhere along the line, it tried to go to watchcat to kill a process and the machine hung. Since this time, I haven't been able to boot using the F1/F3 or any other combination of archived desktops, maintenance desktop or command line prompts other than the original install disks and a couple of bootos2 diskettes. F2 shows the computer hanging on the os2dasd.dmd file. In the first 400 messages, I didn't find much about my specific problem, which is really a curiosity about what is going on. What files got changed and what is the way to back out of the problem. I'll reinstall it if I have to, but I'd like to salvage some downloads that I have. Thanks for the help with the news groups.
