I hate to tell you this, Jim, but I'm afraid the problem isn't with chkdsk, but with the stupidity of Adaptec, and I'm sorry to say you're very likely facing a complete reinstall of your data onto all your partitions Unfortunately -- and I'm fuzzy on the details, since it's been a while, and since I have since enabled translation for drives > 1 gig -- the fixpacked version of the AIC drivers will not allow for untranslated drives (else they simply default to them, I cn't recall), hence your filesystem errors. Chkdsking after this installation, and fixing the problems I believe only makes them worse. Still it might be possible but it's worth trying to fix them. You need to revert back to the old Adaptec driver -- it'll work fine under later FPs -- and see if you can rescue your HD. I haven't had any problems since this one with Adaptec but others have, and these -- along with the Incredible Growing Driver Size -- have probably put me off Adaptec forever. -- Ray Tennenbaum '99 YZF-R6 readme@ http://www.ray-field.com --- WtrGate+ v0.93.p7 sn 165 * Origin: Usenet: AT&T WorldNet Services (1:109/42) +----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ From: drider_trans@my-deja.com 22-Oct-99 17:17:12 To: All 23-Oct-99 04:42:01 Subj: Change font in MS Mail on OS/2 Warp 4 From: drider_trans@my-deja.com I need a PROVEN solution to changing the font in Win3x applications, such as MS Mail 3.5 and FileManager, so my users can see larger size text in extreme resolutions, such as 1280 x something-or-other. From: "Chris Stumpf" I had something like this happen to me. I lost an hpfs partition and chkdsk would not fix it. I eventually ended up trying of all thing DriveImage Pro from PowerQuest. It was able to see the data on the missing partition and I just had it transfer it to another drive. I then fdisked the bad partition, reformated with a /l and then copied the data back via the wps. The only thing I lost was some long file/dir names due to a bit of ea corruption, but I was able to fix that easily. I know that DriveImage is not supposed to be a data recovery tool, but it does work for the task surprisingly well. Where is the swap file, swapper.dat? Are there any files in use on the partition? Before you format anything, you may want to do a zip -rS$ yourfile.zip * or something to that effect (check syntax) from the root dir of your partition to another partition or to a tape or CD, it'll save your stuff for you just in case you decide you need some of it. Then boot to floppies; if you want to install Warp3 fresh anyway, make sure you know everythinb about all the hardware, and that the HD isn't too big for stock Warp 3 without updated IDE support to handle, and then select the advanced installation. It'll ask you which partition to install on and give you the option of formatting FAT or HPFS. Good luck. My frist guess would be; check all the setups on the cards and motherboard, making sure that there are no PORT or IRQ conflicts. Remove as much from the computer as you can to make the install process as easy as possible. That is to say, remove the sound card, lan, etc until you have a "vanilla" hardware mix... "vanilla" meaning minimum hardware configuration. Whatever you pull out now, can be easily installed later on, after your particular problem is ironed out. Try the install again. From my experience, OS/2 is very Frankenstien-hardware friendly, but does not share resources... one iota... I've built reliable computers with the clone-of-all-clone hardware mixes, cards and motherboards with not a single bit of printing or ID of any kind. Boot the machine from the Warp 3 install disks, when you get to the fist installation screen, press F3 for a command prompt. At the prompt, use the FDISK program and delete all partitions on the drive, save and exit, after the mandatory reboot, get a command prompt, use FDISK to set up your partitions, making one of the new partitions installable (the C: partition) reboot again, and proceed with the installation. This assumes that you are not interested in retaining any of the data in the current partitions. Lorne Sunley --- WtrGate+ v0.93.p7 sn 165 * Origin: Usenet: MBnet Networking Inc. How is the print quality compared to the two printers? Add some printer RAM, increase PRINTMONBUF a bit (I use 1500,134,134) and you shouldn't have any problem. There's not really a comparison possible. The Optra Color 40 uses either PCL5 or PS as printer language, and is more dependent on the printer driver. Both IBM and Lexmark continue to develop both printer drivers, so it appears to be a good choice. Got the hang of the changes to drivers for installing on large hard disks, etc., and installed fixpack 40. Got video drivers, sound drivers going. Installed Netscape 4.61 for OS/2 and Feature Installer 1.2.5, in preparation for Java 1.1.8 (which has not been installed yet). Currently, I'm researching the various TCP/IP and MPTS fixpacks I'll need. I have no network card, but I though it would be nice to get TCP/IP 3.0 (I used to run 2.0). After a couple of days of install, download, install, download, I still have several problems: 1. Netscape/TCP/IP setup and email access. TCPDial.exe gives me a dialog box with "account" and "User ID" marked as being missing from my current profile. Clicking okay leaves an invisible window (it shows up in the window list, but can't be viewed. I have been able to make a connection with dialer.exe. I can access websites and newsgroups, but for email and sometimes newsgroup messages, the heading shows up but now message. My ISP IBM Global, now ATT Global. Any ideas on getting TCPDial.exe to work? Could it be related to MPTS and TCP/IP fixpacks yet to be installed? 2. MPTS and TCP/IP fixpacks? For the latest stack, IBM states on the OS/2 TCP/IP V3.x Stack RSU Page the following are the requirements for installing this update: "MPTS FixPak WR08210. Note: WR08210 has been superceded by MPTS FixPak WRx8421. If you decide not to install WRx8421 at this time, you may proceed with this update to install the latest V3.x stack." Does that mean if 8210 is installed 8421 is not required (otherwise, there is no "requirement")? Then they state, "If you've installed . . . CSD WR08410 or MPTS FixPak WRx8421, you must install the latest V4 TCP/IP stack instead of the latest V3.x stack." At ps.softwware.ibm.com, they state WR08423 (called "comverged refresh") supercedes 8421. I guess "converged" refers to combining the V3.x and V4 stack? I am right to conclude I should install WR08423 (and another non cumulative fixpack after it, WR08424) then V4 stack? Where does that leave me, with MPTS V5?, TCP/IP V4?, or just TCP/IP V3 with stack V4? 3. WinOS2 Can't find file "network.drv" Everytime I open a WinOS2 session, I get a dialog box stating this. Hit ok and I'm fine. I can't find reference to this file in the win.ini, system.ini, autoexec.bat nor config.sys files for does a search find this file on my hd. Any ideas what this means, and how to get rid of it? 4. "Dos error:23" When I try to open a full screen WinOS2, after the "network.drv" message, I get a "Dos error:23" message. Hitting OK sends me back to OS/2, so I have no Win full screen capability. It appears the print manager icon appears just before the message; I don't know if this is related, or if its something that loads just before the problem. Any ideas to eliminate or diagnose this problem? As this was something we'd never put together before, we started in a test setup, using a cheap 32 MB memory module to make sure everything worked OK before we tried (and fried!) an expensive 256MB module. The installation went fine (better than some recent Pentium III installs, actually). Then, we decided to shut down and put in the big memory chip. The results were pretty distressing. With the CMOS BIOS flag set to Non-OS2 operating system (that flag having to do with over 64MB of memory), slightly over 64 MB of memory were detected; with the CMOS BIOS flag set to OS2 operating system, only about 16MB of memory was detected!! -- just as you described in your post. I went back and redid the install, with the 256MB module in place, and got exactly the same results. Finally, thinking we might have a hardware problem, we wiped everything and installed Win98; then all 256MBytes were detected. So, where do I go from here to start trying to resolve this? This machine has loads of stuff installed including: Adaptec SCSI 2940UW Matrox 200G AGP with 16MB of memory 3Com 509B PCI AOpen's PCI sound card (with Crystal chipset) I've seen some discussion in newsgroups about AGP possibly being a problem; we popped out the Matrox and put in a vanilla AOpen VGA card; no change in behavior (although I *didn't* try a reinstall). The Gigbyte motherboard is all AMD Irongate; both North and South bridges; the BIOS is Award v1.0 for the 71X motherboard. So, it's not just a VIA thing, as I think your message implied. What I'm less clear about is what, if anything, I can do about it. Is this really somthing that we have to rely on BIOS makers to fix, or is there something that can be done using settings/flags in the CONFIG.SYS? As this problem seems to be independant of motherboard, it may not be a BIOS issue, it could lie in AMD's chipset. I suggest you also report the problem to AMD. The OS/2 memory setting is obsolete and shouldn't be there on new hardware. It was fixed in OS/2 itself years ago. Well, I mailed Gigabyte-Taiwan this weekend. I'll wait a week for them to produce an answer. But in the end, I think we need to talk to the likes of AMI & Award to sort this out. From what I gather, the only thing we all have in common is an AGP bus. Motherboard Vendor or chipset does not matter (e.g. Super7, Athlon, Slot1,... or Ali,Via,Sis...). On the other hand, IBM may well be producing/have the answer already. I mean: there must be an Aurora (Warp Server 4.5 for eBusiness) system out there running with an AGP video card and more than 64MB, right ? Or maybe Aurora has been fixed, but Merlin (Warp 4.0) hasn't (yet?). > The OS/2 memory setting is obsolete and shouldn't be there on new > hardware. It was fixed in OS/2 itself years ago. [Start RANT] MickeySoft is battling against Linux now. However it gives indeed a bad impression on people who setup their BIOS. It looks like OS/2 needs help to use more than 64MB, adding to the 'OS/2 is dead' mantra. (Like running a clone of a certain OS, created in the early seventies, isn't waking the dead !) Ah well, one can only rant ;-) [Disclaimer: I know nothing about Linux, I have never used it, and I just happen to like object oriented desktops (as found in OS/2, BeOS, etc). However I do use a bunch of 'ported' linux programs, of which Xfree86 is the greatest, which can be of course a bad example of Linux desktops (I run the fwm window manager)] Please don't pick on me for being too stupid to understand Linux/Unix :-( And the EMX library is the best thing ever to happen to OS/2 (after JAVA) ! If you have enough space on another partition, you can XCOPY the whole CDROM or (if short of space) just the OS2IMAGE subdirectory from the CDROM to it and install from there. Also copy the OS2SE20.SRC file from the root directory of the CDROM to the root directory of that drive. If you only copied the OS2IMAGE subdirectory tree, don't try to install any networking or Bonus Pak stuff initially. Wait until you have the base OS installed and can reboot and use the CDROM drive before using the Selective Install functions to add networking and features. It only finds about 64 meg or 16 meg, depending on how the CMOS BIOS flag for >64MB handling is set (OS/2 or not). Here's the question: what's really going on? The BIOS detects all 256mb during the POST and Win98 seems to see it all as well. What is going wrong, exactly? And is it really something that only Award/Gigbyte can fix? Or can I do something with the way in which the system boots that will help? I don't need a complete explanation; even a couple of pointers to resources I can read myself would be a big help, since I'm sure that I'm going to have to explain myself to Gigabyte or my vendor more than once. From: prayer5@my-deja.com I have a fixed frequency monitor. It is limited to 60-82Khz horiz and 50-149 Hz vertical. OS/2's logo Warp for e-business displays fine. The desktop however aparently does a direct programming to the video card, I think it is about 53Khz horiz rate for the 640x480 mode. The dots are too slow and the desktop is stretched out horizontally and wrapped around so there are THREE columns of icons - not just the one on the left of the screen. Trying to line up the right one of the 3 mice pointers to the right icon is tough, but reading text in a window is undoable. To contrast old Win95 uses some kind of softer access. I setup 81Khz x 81 Hz for 640x480 in a dos video flash program. After setting that Win95 safe mode works fine with a full screen with the same size I just set up. Is there a way to get OS/2 Alt-F1 (F3) to access this preset mode? Is it something simple as adding to config.sys? or complex as modifying the BHVGA driver with a bit editor? HELP Hello Valheru, there are several cases, which will cause your problem. To tell, which applies, you should provide a bit more information. 1.) Post you disk layout to this group. Provide an output from 'fdisk /query' 2.) Tell us, how you switch between the two OSes. If your are still using OS/2 Bootmanager to switch, then it is not wiped. One wild guess: NT ( and Win98 ) can have several primary partitions active concurrently - Warp can't. I've seen some cases where the boot via bootmanager didn't update this info - it sometimes boots from one primary but assigns C: to another. This situation will result in the message 'not able to control HD'. BootDisks: I currently don't know the Warp server CD. But I assume there must be a utility on the CD to create bootdisks. It should be batch file located in the root. OT: guesswhere.com - sounds like challenge. Am I right guessing that you are located in Florida using an ISP that recently changed ownership and name ? I don't use multiple oses in one computer. I have 3 computers, one with win98, one with winnt 4 and one with os2. Do I have to use the os2 fdisk to do the query or can I use regular fdisk? Since I don't have any os2 disks, I looked online and found someone with warp v3 for sale not far from where I live. My thoughts are that since I have copied all of the files from the os2 HD to a backup folder on my winnt machine, I could buy v3 of warp, format a new hard drive, and then copy all of the files over to the newly formatted hd. Worst case scenario I can find is that i will have to v3 vs e-business. However, the two programs that I need from os2 don't require e-business anyway. Sounds like you're not loading the correct drivers for your hard-drive controller! Are you running this off of IDE or SCSI? Try booting from the install floppies, or when the white "OS/2" appears in the upper left corner hit Alt-F1 and then select Command Prompt (F2 I believe). Then tedit you config.sys (tedit config.sys). Hit Esc (to enter edit mode, F3 to exit) and look for any "basedev=" statements. Installation went smoothly and the printer is producing very nice output with very little impact on system resources - (the main reason I chose this printer and gave up on the Lexmark 3200). However I have no experience with a Postscript based printer and am hoping that someone here can answer a few questions I have about performance and operation. I have noticed that there is a considerable delay between the the time a print job is sent to the spooler and the printer actually starts printing. E.G. I just printed a 3.5 x 5.0 inch jpg file through PMview and the printer spent about 4 minutes in processing mode before the image was printed. Is this normal performance for a postscript based printer? Would adding more memory to the base 4 megs speed up the processing? Is there anything else one can do to speed up the processing or is this just a characteristic of postscript printers? I am not overly concerned about this as there is no hit on system performance during the print process, but I would like to know just for the sake of knowledge. Also does anyone have an idea of how to use this printer in PCL5 emulation mode. The installation process only installed the postscript driver. Do I have to install a different driver to use PCL5 mode? I Looked on the insallation CD and although there were PCL5 drivers the Optra 40 was not listed in them. How does PCL5 differ from Postscript? Is there an advantage to use one over the other? Am I even asking the right or pertinent questions in regards to the above paragraph? Thanks in advance for any time one spends in responding to my queries. First of all: thanks for putting up a message at ADMzone (it might feed Mickeysoft & Micronerd FUD, but at least we get more people in). It's not just K7 or Athlon. I'm running a Super7 MoBo (Gigabyte's GA-5AA), which is pretty recent (DIMM support only). And I seem to rememebr somebody posting the same probem with an Intel BX440 MoBo (over at comp.os.os2.misc). [Unfortunatedly, default settings in my newsgroup browser decided to axe it! I have a deep, deep hate for standard settings] I'm convinced it is a BIOS issue: for some reason the BIOS maker fumbled OS/2 4.0 compatibility (I'm don't know about OS/2 4.5 Aurora). Maybe they're doing something different because they switched from SIMM+DIMM to DIMM only. I might try a quick install of Aurora on my system and see what happens then, that'll keep me busy this weekend ;-) --- WtrGate+ v0.93.p7 sn 165 * Origin: Usenet: Sirius Cybernetics Corporation (1:109/42) +----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ From: no@no.no 28-Oct-99 07:19:25 To: All 28-Oct-99 11:18:04 Subj: Can't get window list From: Sadfer I am no longer able to get the 'window list' popup to appear using crtl-esc or the launchpad window list button. If not, you would cause your system to double spooling of print jobs printed from fullscreen WinOS/2, For the "Dos error:23" : I remember this as an WIN32S related error. Norris" I am getting exactly the same problem with an ATI Rage II+. I've managed to setup XFree86/OS2 on another machine with a different video card, and while it was a little tedious figuring out how to do it, with enough RTFMing, I managed it. This ATI however has me stumped. Why can't it read the BIOS? I know it's visible under OS/2 because I can see it using a memory browser in a DOS box, or using Theseus/3 in OS/2 itself. I assume it's because it can't read the BIOS that it doesn't seem to be able to figure out that there are several perfectly acceptable mode settings which would work. Running XF86-Mach64 with -probeonly doesn't work, with essentially the same set of messages, so I can't set the clock etc. by hand. I can get XFree86/OS2 to run with the VGA driver at 640x480 or with the SVGA driver at an unusable 320x400, so it seems like everything else is working, and installcheck (or is that checkinstall?) finds no errors. I've tried moving the xf86sup driver in front of and behind the ati0 driver, I've tried removing the theseus5 driver, I've turned off cacheing of the video BIOS. I have nothing connected to the TV out of my card (as suggested in the FAQ) and the TV out isn't enabled. I've fixed a problem which made fullscreen OS/2 sessions die if a working directory was specified, and I've now run out of ideas. My system is W4, FP12, DDFP1, AMDK6-200, 96MB. System type (Athlon or Super7, ...) BIOS manufacturer (Award or AMI) Chipset (Ali M1542 & M1543C , VIA Apollo MVP3, Intel810E, Intel BX440,...) Video interface (PCI or AGP) Memory module size or sequence. Yet it works fine on an FIC 2013 (see 'gbooth' fellow) ?? Just what the hell are we hunting down here ? Symptom round-up: 1) BIOS scans memory fine (aka POST runs ok) 2) Windows NT 4.0 or Dos7 (aka Win95, Win98) map all memory. 3) checking hardware settings under any operating system reveal no devices use the area between 64MB and 128MB (on a 128MB system), i.e. between 4000000hex and 8000000hex. 4) OS/2 does not map all memory: If you set 'OS select > 64MB' to OS/2, you get 16 or 32 MB only. (not a surprise because this bios setting is meant for really old OS/2 versions like 2.0 and 1.0). If you set 'OS select > 64MB' to non-OS/2, you get the magical 64+a bit MB (Like 65MB). It really depends on a lot of things, such as the speed of the CPU in the printer, the nature of the PostScript file produced by OS/2, etc. > Would adding more memory to > the base 4 megs speed up the processing? Possibly. I can't guarantee it. 4MB is pretty slim for a color PostScript printer, though. If nothing else, increasing the RAM is likely to increase the number of files you can print -- that is, with only 4MB, sooner or later you'll likely run into a file that the printer can't print because it has insufficient RAM. > Is there anything else one can do to > speed up the processing or is this just a characteristic of postscript > printers? Am I even asking the right or pertinent questions in regards to the > above paragraph? PostScript is a page description language (PDL) created by Adobe in the 1980s that supported, even then, some pretty advanced features. PCL is a PDL developed by Hewlett-Packard in the 1980s. At its inception, PCL was pretty weak compared to PostScript -- PCL was more like the Escape-code languages of dot-matrix printers, really. Over time, both languages improved, but PCL has improved more than PostScript, so they're now closer to being similar in power, although PostScript probably still has the edge in most respects. Because they're completely different and unrelated languages, you do need a different driver to use PCL mode. I'm not familiar with the Optra 40 per se, but most modern printers that support both modes will auto-detect which one to use, so you can just install a PCL 5 driver and print. It's best if the driver you install is specific to the printer, though, so that it can use any of the printer's unique features, and so it knows about the printer's margin capabilities and whatnot. -- Rod Smith smithrod@bellatlantic.net http://members.bellatlantic.net/~smithrod Author of _Special Edition Using Corel WordPerfect 8 for Linux_, from Que --- WtrGate+ v0.93.p7 sn 165 * Origin: Origin Line 1 Goes Here (1:109/42) +----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ From: rri0189@attglobal.net 28-Oct-99 13:14:28 To: All 28-Oct-99 16:44:09 Subj: Re: Lexmark Optra 40 From: "John W. These need to access our local network (NetBios & TCPIP), so getting the PCCard (PCMCIA) set up is paramount. I'm using 3Com 3C589C PCMCIA cards, previously used in TP560's. Well, to my horror I can not get the 600E to handshake with the network. I've reinstalled a bare Warp install now a couple of times, installed FP11, updated the MTPS and Peer services and the TCPIP stacks to the latest. I've installed Warp/peer services/TCPIP on a number of ThinkPads now, so that was a snap to run through. Then to that fresh setup I install the 600E PCCard drivers downloaded from the IBM device driver site, they are dated Sept 99. I then reconfigure the adapter to 3Com Etherlink PCCard family and attach the OS/2 NetBios and TCPIP protocols. (I have to install this as a second step, because the 600E's PCMCIA is not available in the base Warp4 install) I start the PC Card director, it recognizes the 3C589 PCMCIA lan card. I then logon to Peer services, but there is no communication. I can't see any of the new TP600E's resources from other machines, and opening up "File and Print Client Resource Browser" on the 600E shows only the TP600E listed. I also canNOT "ping" out to the network, although pinging the TP600E *itself* works. During boot up there are no error messages, or drivers skipped. Hot swapping the 3C589 to an older TP560 gets access to the network as normal, so it is not a card or cabling issue. I booted into Win98 on that new TP600E, and set it up for TCPIP on our intranet, and was able to ping out to another machine, which I guess proves out the base hardware. (notebook/PCMCIA slots/cabling/hub etc.) I'm sure that this is something really simple, but just a new twist on the new 600Es. Can anyone suggest what the needle in the haystack is? Any suggestions for testing this out further? You are right on, or real close just about everywhere. The invisible window-I should have caught that, but I was expecting something far more complicated. I did some research on the Netscape font deal, and sure enough, there are a number of particular circumstance that the Netscape for OS/2 default, Courier New is installed, but since I had yet to install Star Office, Lotus Smartsuite or Java Unicode, I didn't have it. After getting it working with another font choice per your suggestion, I went back and installed the unicode to get complete TrueType font access in the rest of Warp 3 Connect. All is well on this front. I have cautious optimism on the TCP/IP front. I've been studying the Warpupdate page Mark Schlegel suggested in the earlier post (Thanks Mark). I installed 8423/8424 and un00959 and was doing ok, but then got daring and went 8610. I looked through all the other odd updates for Warp 3 Connect but, checking the file dates before updating, I found that 8610 replaced almost everything with more recent files again. Another confusing thing is that some files were in different directories than the readme stated the "new" files should be placed in (e.g., TCPIP/ETC rather than MPTN/ETC). I skipped anything with an older date and ploughed ahead. Of course, at this point my intenet access was broke again. Six hours later I'm on line; maybe it was a service provider problem. I'm timid to update anything else as it seems to be working fine now. Done a backup of the drive for safety and good to go. A couple of small weird things: while cruisin around for clues while I couldn't get on line, I double clicked on the MPTS icon, chose config, I get a flickering window that I have to Cntl-Esc Kill to get out of. Also, when I boot, I get a fail sendmail cmd.exe routine (file not found) and the orphan window needs to be closed. Haven't found any reference to sendmail in autoexec.bat, config.sys, startup group, etc. Re network.drv, I found a doc reference to a system.ini boot line "network.drv=" that was missing from my ini file. Since I have no network driver, I added the line and set it to a dummy file named me.drv. It got rid of the warning message, but I like your solution. The dos error:23 warning is indeed related to wrong windows version stuff. The install routine picked up dozens of programs, and file associations with stuff on my c: drive (Win95). Warp 3 Connect is installed on my g:. I spent a couple of days remming the c:, then d: (win95 programs). Finally got rid of the message. Some concern that associations and setup that should have been associated with things in WINOS2 were not made because of the recognition of the win95 stuff. Also, I got a "file not found" message when booting winOS2 full screen, but not windowed. I copied the settings for the windowed to a new prog icon reset it to full screen and used that for my full screen WinOS2 sessions. NetBEUI over TCP/IP.(NET-2) 3 workstations, all OS/2 peer-to-peer, 1 Linux Samba server, NetBEUI over TCP/IP. When we switched NET-1 from NetBEUI to NetBEUI over TCP/IP (for access to the new Samba server), we encountered minor problems with StarOffice blowing up reading certain files from the Warp Server. Always one station could be found to load it and save it back, then no problems. Then we upgraded to FixPack-11 for Y2K. >>>MAJOR<<< StarOffice problems blowing up when loading files, or in many cases when going into settings menu (trace says GPF). Tried to get support from Star Division, but they were too busy selling out to Sun (we paid $500 for dealer status with support, boy did that evaporate). Bought StarOffice 5.1 (three days before it became free) - no help. Now Linux Care is providing StarOffice support. They said they would try, but they know OS/2 like the backside of the moon. Well, as an experiment, we upgraded TCP/IP and Peer on one machine. >>>That machine no longer autostarts its connections<<< (except to the Samba server). We have to "reconnect" them all by hand. No help for StarOffice. So, to try to get to the bottom of this, we installed FixPack-12, TCP/IP upgrade and Peer upgrade on two of the NET-2 machines. >>>No autostart of connections<<<. We deleted the shares and connections and reestablished them. No dice. Still no autoconnect - >>>and no error messages saying "one or more of your connections failed<<<. The resources shared from the server always work fine. I ran into this with both IP8410 and IP8412. The only way to get it to work is to roll back to the IP8407 level. It affects both disk shares and printer shares. If you have a support agreement with IBM file a program defect and maybe they will have it fixed for the next fixpack. There have been a number of complaints concerning this problem in the USENET comp.os.os2.networking groups. It happens with both NETBIOS and NETBIOS over TCP/IP so it is not a protocol problem. True enough. Today, RAM is cheap enough to get good bitmap throughput from an inexpensiv eprinter. It is quite possible to get good throughput from a 4MB PostScript printer if it is used for what it is good at. PostScript is a programming language which is excellent for vector graphics and (vector based) text rendering. The bitmap handling, on the other hand, is extremely inefficient. Some annotations left: SENDMAL.EXE This is a SMTP daemon for OS/2. You only need it, if you want to use ULTIMAIL , cause AFAIR it can't utilize a remote SMTP. The TCP/IP config prompts you for starting sendmail if you havn't selected it. Then it gets started by TCPSTART.CMD through your startup folder. You can just edit TCPSTART,CMD remming out the lines dealing with sendamil and you're fine. Locations moved With newer MPTS the TCP/IP stack and related programs ( route, ppp ... ) former located in the TCP/IP tree have been moved to MPTS. This will allow for running apps like Netscape by just installing MPTS and not TCP/IP. The most important thing left to TCPIP tree is the configuration notebook. Whithout that you will have to manually edit the configuration files - though possible but annoying. Others are FTP and Telnet both client and server as well as some other daemons. Flickering Window That's a serious one, and I don't have any idea. Maybe some other can jump in. OS/2 and Windows on the same machine I strongly recommend having each of them on a primary partition. Selecting one or the other in Bootmanager each will get assigned drive C:. This will prevent OS/2 from getting messed up by finding some W95 apps which it can't start anyway. It also prevents W* from playing havoc whith your OS/2 partition, which is a serious danger IMO. File not found while starting WinOS/2 FS Does the error appear in the Windows environment, or is it while still in the DOS stage ? For the latter look at AUTOEXEC.BAT, the former WIN.INI, SYSTEM.INI. You may also look at DOS_DEVICE in Win-OS/2 properties whether a driver designated to be loaded from there (e.g. ANSI.SYS) is pointing to a wrong location. Bye/2 Meinolf Satnam Singh wrote: > > Wow. Maybe still an APM question: Are COM-ports or audio device switched off while on battery ? From: Sushenjit Bandyopadhyay I have just installed Warp 4 (with FP 12). I have a dialup connection to the internet using DOIP. After running for a few days the (connecting and disconnecting as needed) the internet access stops working. I don't know much about TCPIP, but this is what I get, when I do netstat \a. [E:\]netstat -a addr 0.0.0.0 interface 10 mask 0 broadcast 0.0.0.0 addr 128.8.22.5 interface 10 mask ffff0000 broadcast 128.8.3.101 addr 127.0.0.1 interface 0 mask ff000000 broadcast 127.0.0.1 When the system works I get: [E:\]netstat -a addr 128.8.22.5 interface 10 mask ffff0000 broadcast 128.8.3.101 addr 127.0.0.1 interface 0 mask ff000000 broadcast 127.0.0.1 So what is adding the 0.0.0.0 IP? I've already tried once and run into the problem with processing locked files. I have some long LIBPATH and PATH statements, so this is likely to be the problem. I've installed peer on an alternate OS/2 partition so that I could see what was added to CONFIG.SYS. Is either of these approaches likely to work and be relatively safe? (1) Save the current CONFIG.SYS. Temporarily remove enough references in the long statements to get them below 256 characters. Boot with that and just don't start anything likely to use the removed entries. Run the selective install. Add the removed entries back to the new CONFIG.SYS. (2) Create empty directories for the entries that would be added by the selective install (\IBMLAN\NETLIB, \IBMLAN\NETPROG, etc.) and insert the necessary references to them in CONFIG.SYS, making sure that they fall within the first 256 characters of the statements they are added to. Run selective install. And in the second case, would I have to insert stuff only in the PATH, etc. statements that already exist, or would I have to add the new statements too (DEVICE=, RUN=, etc.)?
