I too have pretty well sworn off beta software, but I was glad I made an exception for PmView 2. It installs without affecting your previous setup [pay attention to the install and association process] and certainly didn't screw anything up on _my_ system. I strongly suggest that you join the PMView beta mailing list and get hold of the current [practically finished] beta. I am sure you won't be disappointed. > Will I be able to create and edit (video) movies? Will OS/2 users see any major features and improvements? I find the interface vastly improved, and the display is faster. I have to admit that my use of the program is limited to the basics, but it works _so_ well.... From: Cityboy@Spam-No-More.Net What are the changes in 2.0 anyway. I downloaded 1.05 but didn't register it because there are a couple things about it I just didn't like. It takes way too long to load the files. If you have a directory with several thousand JPG's it takes a full two minutes just to load the thumbnails. I have a winos/2 program called Thumbsplus that loads the same directory in 5 seconds. The other thing is the interface just works backwards in my opinion. The first thing you get is a blank image viewing window and the file listing is opened from there. This results in only being able to have 1 image window open at a time. The file listing should be the first thing that opens and you should open the viewing windows from the thumbnails thereby allowing multiple viewing windows. -- ----------------------------------------------------------- cityboy@concentric.net ----------------------------------------------------------- --- WtrGate+ v0.93.p7 sn 165 * Origin: Usenet: Concentric Internet Services (1:109/42) +----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ From: drider_trans@my-deja.com 22-Oct-99 17:30:16 To: All 23-Oct-99 04:42:00 Subj: Change font in MS Mail on OS/2 Warp 4 From: drider_trans@my-deja.com I need a PROVEN solution to changing the font in Win3x applications, such as MS Mail 3.5 and FileManager, so my users can see larger size text in extreme resolutions, such as 1280 x something-or-other. Possibly. You need some fairly specialized hardware to reprogram the BIOS chips like that, and often they're soldered directly into the motherboard. The vast majority of computer shops, however, are not sophisticated enough to have the suitable equipment to reprogram your flash for you, so you probably would have had to buy a new motherboard. > (finally got both OS/2 and Linux installed, using bootmanager to > start both (onre or the other), with the mouse working. Unix was designed by programmers and syste administrators for programmers an system administrators. No provisions have been made in Linux for HCI. This doesn't make Linux a bad OS - for many things Linux is a great Unix, and is only going to continue to get better. But, well, it's still Unix, and if you don't like Unix, you won't generally like setting up Linux (thankfully, once it's setup, if you only have a very specific set of applications you need, and you can get GUI versions of them, you'll probably never have to worry about the underlying CLI or configuration ever again. I imagine one could setup an amazing Linux box for someone who has never seens a Unix command prompt before running Netscape, StarOffice and a few other productivity applications and they'd never know the difference). Infinite timeout on TCP/IP connections, resulting in PMMail waiting an infinitely long time for responses on an active TCP/IP session. 2. PMMail loses it's registration key and reverts back to "demo" mode, halting systems that run it in batch mode. 3. Filters intermittently won't function. 4. Messages intermittently won't display. >Now, it's completely obvious to me that this was a full maintenance >release :) Well, is sure isn't obvious to me. ;( I think it's interesting that although BMT Micro knew that Southsoft was not supporting their customers who purchased PMMail from them, and a BMT Micro person who knew about the problem with Southsoft took over the product, yet the new software producers still ignored former (and present) customers and continued to produce the product with serious bugs that often prevent it's use. I'm not impressed with the way the "new owners" do business. I hope they do something in the near future that may change that opinion. Or perhaps someone needs to do something to make it much more difficult for companies like BMT Micro to sell ALL of it's products without backing up the implied warranty when the producer won't? --- WtrGate+ v0.93.p7 sn 165 * Origin: Usenet: Dyslexics UNTIE (1:109/42) +----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ From: giprice@ibm.net 23-Oct-99 04:07:20 To: All 23-Oct-99 04:42:02 Subj: Re: Problem fixed! From: giprice@ibm.net I think that with any multi-module screensaver it is prudent to verify each and every module before making it eligible for selection in random mode. Sometimes a module will crash the system intermittently. I still don't know which of 2 out of 3 modules in ScreenSaver resulting in a black screen caused a permanent lock-up, but I have now disabled both of them. I would just try a couple of your faves to be eligible for activation, and then gradually increase the selection to see which particular module causes the problem. I wonder, because I want to use PNGs instead of GIFs in an application I develop (PNG files are both smaller and can have more than 256 colors) and I know that MS IE supports PNGs from v4. I have 64 MB of memory a Matrox Mystique Video card with 4 MB of memory. I have two hard drives and both are ATA 3 PIO Mode 4 drives. The 0 drive size is 2014 and the 1 drive has 1673 MB. I have four partitions on each drive and Windows 95 is installed on the 0 drive. I have two HPFS partitions on the second drive. When I boot the computer using the original Installation disk and after disk 2 has been installed I select Advanced Installation and then Select a different partition. FDISK starts and will see all of the partitions but when I select the HPFS partitions on the second drive the only options I get are to delete the partition and when I do, then it will allow me to create a partition. It just goes around in circles. It allows reading hpfs drives under DOS. It worked for me with Win95. I suspect it should work with Win98 also, however I don't know. If you load it from autoexec.bat any hpfs drives will be accessible once Win98 is loaded. Look for amos320.zip on hobbes. This is too bad and will not encourage me to upgrade my current registered PMView v1.05. PMView has its merits and provides some features that others do not (Embellish for instance), yet Embellish handles GIF animations quite well. I have seen the list of items the PMView 2.0 upgrade will offer and I'm not that impressed. I don't work with Windows graphic files, I DO work with GIF animations and movie videos. It would be very nice to have one graphics application that provided all of the features regular OS/2 users need. Without it, it means I am relegated to running at least three separate OS/2 applications to work with my graphics: Embellish, Photo>Graphics (a God-awful application), and MainActor/2. I haven't pursued Gimp/2 because it requires so much additional non-OS/2 programming to my system. I wonder if Peter Neilsen (sp?) isn't seeking to increase his profits by moving away from a once well received OS/2 product over to the Microsoft platform. I don't use those MS platforms so PMView's ability to work on those systems is mute to me. Is my upgrade dollar paying for entry/establishment into that market? If so, what am I, the OS/2 user, getting for my support and buck? I know now I'm not getting a new PMView feature to handle GIF animations and/or video graphics but I am getting a new and useless PMView feature that will allow me to use/work with Windows proprietary graphical formats. I do feel Peter's offer of lifetime upgrades of PMView/2 to those who register prior to the release of v2.0 is commendable but I'm skeptical. Pessimist, aren't you? As it happens, he's using Visual Age C++ and Open Class Libraries, so it's a common code base for the most part. Don't begrudge the guy an honest buck. As for upgrades, the free upgrade has always been a feature of the 1.x releases - nothing new there. You seem to have a current version of PMView already, as you speak of the possibility of upgrading to v2.0; if this is true, I do not understand what you mean by your "upgrade dollar" -- you already have a right to free upgrades. If, of course, you are "upgrading" from an unregistered copy, the consideration is a real one. How many free upgrades you would after registering v2.0 as a new user is not the right question to ask. Although PMView has been around for a long time, it is still in v1.05, the significance of which is that there have not been many bug fixes -- or much need for bug fixes. Peter is one of the more careful programmers; clearly he tests programs rather thoroughly before releasing them, thus avoiding the necessity for repeated bug fixes. ------------- Stan Goodman Qiryat Tiv'on Israel Spammers are getting smarter; email sent to l_luciano@da.mob will not reach me. The problem appears to be that I'm never getting an IP address for the host. I would prefer using Injoy anyway, since I want to set up a LAN so that all three computers can use the same Internet connection, and I understand that's the way to go. Using Injoy, I can dial in just fine and establish a PPP connection using either PAP or CHAP. Unfortunately, that gets me only to the local level. Netscape, PMMAIL, and PMINEWS can't find the host although Injoy reports local, remote, and nameserver addresses. To get connected to the Internet I've always had to say "SLIP," and I don't know how to do that with Injoy. I read about scripts, thinking that I could recreate what is being done and add one line to the end (the documentation for this program is awful if you don't know what you're doing already), but all my attempts to capture something get a bunch of garbage. I also tried sending "SLIP" to COM1 from the command line, but of course the com port is already in use so that doesn't work. Can anyone tell me something that will work? Is it really supposed to be this hard? I'd be really grateful for any help, since I'm losing access to the old lines at the end of the week. As a matter of fact, MANY new features came under discussion during this beta cycle. A lot of them were implemented, and many of them will have to wait for a future version. Basically, it came to a point where Peter had to start saying no to new features in order to get Version 2 finished before the end of the year. And, I might add, that he was encouraged to say no by most everyone on the beta mailing list. >I wonder if Peter Neilsen (sp?) isn't seeking to increase his >profits by moving away from a once well received OS/2 product >over to the Microsoft platform. Peter is doing cross-platform development, and doing it in such a way as to minimize his development costs while maximizing the performance on all platforms. Due to IBM's marketing (or lack thereof) of OS/2 to the mainstream users, it's simply not possible for a developer to make money by developing ONLY for OS/2 (unless that developer has found a niche market for an application that big business users will pay big $$$ for. >I do feel Peter's offer of lifetime upgrades of PMView/2 to those >who register prior to the release of v2.0 is commendable but I'm >skeptical. Given that this has been the case several times this past year, I don't blame you for your skepticism. However, having participated in the beta of PMView 2.0, I don't get that feeling at all. I've participated in (and continue to participate in) many beta tests for many different products (all OS/2 apps, including OS/2 itself) and the PMView BETA is the most unique I've been involved in. If a bug got reported, a new EXE file was posted within hours or days (I seem to remember a time frame in excess of 20 hours to compile the application from source). Many of the features that were requested will be in future releases. And these releases are already in the planning stages or the early stages of development. Peter was, and continues to be active in replying to users requests and reports in the mailing list. I'd expect a GA release of PMView 2.0 to be as near to bug free as you could possibly ask for. And fixes will not have to wait for the next release. BTW, the mailing list that I refer to is a closed list. The only way you can participate is by being a registered user of PMView 1.x. I would get a win-os2 error when trying to open BMP files. PMJPEG (and now PMView) was the program I was trying to use. I did have assocations for word procesing and spreadsheet files to MS Word and Excel (Office 4.2 - win16) which I had removed a little bit ago. When I changed those associatons for (DOC, WPD< SAM, XLS etc) to StarOffice, guess what happened when I tried to open a BMP? You got it. Star Office opened. THe same thing happens to me with PCX files too. If I remove the spreadsheet and word processing associtaions compeltely, then I get and error that PMMail tried to open a program in the foreground but that it got opened in the background instead. And what does CTRL-ESC bring up? PMView with the BMP I was trying to view. The only clue I have is that BMP is an octet-stream mime type like word processing and spreadsheet. The only other thing, I just thought of it, is that I haven't tried disabling Object Desktop. IT always bugged me that OD has file viewer built in and it seemed PMMAil should jsut be able to latch into those if nothing else is specified. How many folks with this problem are running OD 2.0? I don't know if this ehelps anyone but it is definetely a bug somewhere and it seems nothing you do with the associations wil change it much. If OD is the culprit, then is there anything for OS/2 that gives me quick Word file viewers and virtual desktops? I've not always been happy with the speed decrease OD brings with it for it's usability but that's for another thread. Regards, Kim -- ------- Kim A. Sommer Humans do it Better! If you boot from diskette these ACL's will keep you from reading the data on the drive using normal HPFS. There is also a THIN386.IFS that can be used to create boot diskettes that will read the data on the drive when the ACL's are in place. I remember that there was a statement somewhere that the "File and Print Services" client not completely compatible with HPFS386 but I cannot remember the source of the statement. I kind of took it for granted that it worked right for other people. My system was working fine for years up until the last couple weeks after a few installs that I made the mistake of trying. Recovering has been a job & a half... I may have gotten back my CD drive now and everything else seems to be working again, but who knows? I still can't get EscapeGL 3.0 to work right and haven't reinstalled my S3 video drivers after Scitech's SDDb7 fiasco.... And that's where this shutdown problem is a real pain... Hopefully someone has an idea why this one program won't exit while other emx programs do... Junkbuster is great, but right now it's really getting in the way... Of course if I just get the system back 100%, I won't have to worry about shutting it down ;-) Thanks again... Well then, unless you're trying to do some fancy X-windows stuff, if you're looking for a text-mode "file commander" utility, try one of the best OS/2 text-mode apps around: FC/2, which you can get at http://silk.apana.org.au/fc.htm Extremely user-configurable. Read the manual, then re-read it -- this is a wonderful too, very powerful. Just fyi: EMX is great to have for many applications, but you prolly should be up to speed on OS/2 and wps stuff before you start fiddling with it. Off the top of my head though I'd say if you want to check if you've installed it correctly, open up an OS/2 command window and type emxrev You should get something like EMX : revision = 60 EMXIO : revision = 60 EMXLIBC : revision = 60 EMXLIBCM : revision = 62 EMXLIBCS : revision = 62 EMXWRAP : revision = 60 If you don't, then something's wrong with your installation: probably the files are in directories not in your path, dpath and/or libpath statements. A word of advice: for the sake of doing installations of applications which need files (such as DLL files) to be in system paths in config.sys, you're best off creating a new (set of) subdirectory(ies) on a DIFFERENT DRIVE than the one you boot OS/2 off of. Eg, though I may boot off drives E: or L:, my EMX is installed on subdirectories on F:/ME/OS2/UNIX (and all my config.sys path statements of course point to these). This makes it easier to say, upgrade to newer revisions of OS/2, or share files between different OS/2 installations -- many other advantages. But all that's subsidiary to the main point: get FC/2. -- Ray Tennenbaum '99 YZF-R6 readme@ http://www.ray-field.com --- WtrGate+ v0.93.p7 sn 165 * Origin: Usenet: AT&T WorldNet Services (1:109/42) +----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ From: diin@xs4all.nl 26-Oct-99 19:54:26 To: All 26-Oct-99 20:25:02 Subj: Scanning. If you can't get it all in your first shot, you have a commandline that you can reuse to get the rest in a second shot. --- Disclaimer: unless explicitly mentioned otherwise, I do not speak for the company I work for. --- WtrGate+ v0.93.p7 sn 165 * Origin: Usenet: @Home Network Canada (1:109/42) +----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ From: mircomir@lica.unimo.it 27-Oct-99 14:44:12 To: All 28-Oct-99 10:23:16 Subj: Re: PMView 2.0 From: Mirco Miranda Dilbert Firestorm wrote: > RE: Re: PMView 2.0? > BY: whonea@codenet.net (Will Honea) > > Since the PMView won't be supporting animated gifs, is there an os2 program > that can do this? > > Origin: Nuclear Wasteland * 504-394-0509 With PMVIEW you can view all pages of Animated GIF (Menu : view, next pages) bye, Mirco. --- WtrGate+ v0.93.p7 sn 165 * Origin: Usenet: CINECA (1:109/42) +----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ From: tvv@sbs.kiev.ua 27-Oct-99 12:45:15 To: All 28-Oct-99 10:23:16 Subj: Re: Where can I get Microsoft C Compiler for OS/2 (version 6)? From the Netscape menu "Edit" -> "Preferences". Expand the "Appearance" tree in the "Category" field then click on "Fonts" the dialog windows changes to allow the selection of the default fonts. You could, also, be fooled if you have a network running, since that seems to take up to a minute to get itself shut down, before the rest of the shutdown can complete. When it "hangs", do Ctrl-Esc to get a window list. It might show you what is still running, which might be a clue, or, it might tell you that some program is not responding, which could be another clue. How much of the desktop (if any) is left when it "hangs"? Is there any single program that is running, when the hang happens, that may not be running, when it works? Install multimedia, but DESELECT the sound device. Check mmos2\mmpm2.ini (it's a text file). This is where you might see two drivers installed if that has happened. If you want me to post the contents of any other file let me know. The 2 I would normally expect ('resolv' and 'resolv2') plus an extra one 'resolv.inj'. 'resolv' and 'resolv.inj' are dated today and yesterday respectively. NetBEUI over TCP/IP.(NET-2) 3 workstations, all OS/2 peer-to-peer, 1 Linux Samba server, NetBEUI over TCP/IP. When we switched NET-1 from NetBEUI to NetBEUI over TCP/IP (for access to the new Samba server), we encountered minor problems with StarOffice blowing up reading certain files from the Warp Server. Always one station could be found to load it and save it back, then no problems. Then we upgraded to FixPack-11 for Y2K. >>>MAJOR<<< StarOffice problems blowing up when loading files, or in many cases when going into settings menu (trace says GPF). Tried to get support from Star Division, but they were too busy selling out to Sun (we paid $500 for dealer status with support, boy did that evaporate). Bought StarOffice 5.1 (three days before it became free) - no help. Now Linux Care is providing StarOffice support. They said they would try, but they know OS/2 like the backside of the moon. Well, as an experiment, we upgraded TCP/IP and Peer on one machine. >>>That machine no longer autostarts its connections<<< (except to the Samba server). We have to "reconnect" them all by hand. No help for StarOffice. So, to try to get to the bottom of this, we installed FixPack-12, TCP/IP upgrade and Peer upgrade on two of the NET-2 machines. >>>No autostart of connections<<<. We deleted the shares and connections and reestablished them. No dice. Still no autoconnect - >>>and no error messages saying "one or more of your connections failed<<<. The problem seems to center around Peer networking ACLs. If you installed hpfs386 before the network, I suspect it will continue to work fine after a Peer network installation. That was not the case for me (and others): at some point sooner or later, hpfs386 crashed the system and trashed the system and network directories, especially anything associated with ACLs. The resources shared from the server always work fine. I ran into this with both IP8410 and IP8412. The only way to get it to work is to roll back to the IP8407 level. It affects both disk shares and printer shares. If you have a support agreement with IBM file a program defect and maybe they will have it fixed for the next fixpack. There have been a number of complaints concerning this problem in the USENET comp.os.os2.networking groups. It happens with both NETBIOS and NETBIOS over TCP/IP so it is not a protocol problem. First Gripe: Approach with SmartSuite 2.2 v1.1. Now I PAID for this program and I expect this program to work for me but it continues to fail in the stretch. I have a large dbase of approximately 3,000 video movies and I'm adding all the time. I'm a real video hound and record just about everything I come across. I list them in categories like classic movies (usually old B&W), hit movies, TV Specials, Sports Events, etc. You name it and I've probably got it somewhere on the shelf, labeled, titled and numbered for easy finding. My problem with Approach has been trying to print out various or special reports. We've set up sort of a video club and there are friends who ask for a list of all mysteries or sports, etc. Each and every time I try to sort the full worksheet of all the records down to just particular cateogories Approach freezes up solid on me. It will take me days and a lot of luck to get one specialized listing printed. It is very embarrassing because I live in the dorms and one of the very few OS/2 users. I'm very proud of OS/2 but I die a thousand deaths when a group of college buddies come in and ask me if I've got "such and such a movie" and why don't you just print out a list so we can pick and choose? I finally gave up on trying to print out a full listing of all movies with SS/2 and turned to the dbase in IBMWorks. IBMWorks would not read a dbf4 file but it would read a dbf3. From there I was able to print out a full listing of every video. It is an awful looking report though and I don't know how to sort the records into categories and just print out each categorie (if anyone knows email me with the instructions). That's my complaint with SS/2. I want the Lotus developers to get off their damn butts and fix this program so it works properly. If I want to sort my dbase then control/hide all the unnecessary or unwanted records so I can create a nice looking report of special or a group of designated records I should be able to do it. I PAID for this DAMN program dammit! Gripe No. 2: Trying to empty my trash in Netscape 4.6.1. I know I've complained about this before and I know the Netscape Team is working on it (or has it fixed for the next release of Communicator) but get off your duffs and release an update ASAP. I get a lot of spam that goes straight to the dumper (trash). If the subject line as the letters sex, babe, lottery, casino, etc, I never see it but after a while my trash folder is huge. I've tried every possible way to empty it hoping it won't crash Netscape or bring my system to a halt without fail. If it only crashees Netscape the next time I open Communicator there is a tmp file filled with my trash. I try to delete that file and Communicator crashes. I start it up again and I've got ANOTHER temp file of my temp file trash. It's a catch22 and it just keeps building itself. I've got tons of hard disk space (now have 20 gig) but it is stupid to have an application that won't let me empty my deleted emails or an application that doubles my deleted emails if I try to delete them. FIX the DAMN thing DAMMIT! Communicator is free and I do appreciate it but give me a break, huh? What good is it if I have to keep uninstalling the program and reinstalling the program just to empty my trash? OS/2 has so many wonderful things going for it that I want the (few, i.e., dbase) applications we have to at least work well enough to give us what we need. Sorry if I rambled on. Actually I think the ACL's are a minor problem - just not working. What is more likely to wreck files read from and saved to a peer server running on HPFS386 is the communications architecture. I once had access to technical document discussing the difference between Entry Level Server and Advanced Server ( HPFS386 ). On the Entry Level the commuication stream from network to disk runs through every layer of the operating system opposed to the Advanced, where the networking stuff has direct access to the filesystem while bypassing several layers of the OS, hence gaining a lot of performance and decreasing system load. The Peer is not ( or even worse: partially ) aware of this technology. So, if you run HPFS386 on a workstation without serving any shares to others, you will still be illegal but technically quite save. If ever you start sharing resources from such a system, you will loose your data by a probability near 100%. However - the custom installation does not list StarBase as an installable component with all its file filters etc. Opening any dbase file opens it in the spreadsheet. How do I open StarBase files? See also my reply to Kris Kadela. The main problem is that a company I'm consulting also in the area of software likes to move from Office97 to StarOffice, but they are often getting Access97 files from business partners. Even if Acess97 is listed as a supported database file for the Windows version I did not find a possibility to open it in StarOffice. Doubleclicking on the Access file opens Access97(which they have to uninstall soon or buy additional license) instead. I know of Staroffice but I dislike the idea of not being able to fire up individual modules, like WordPro, as an individual application instead of being forced to run the entire Staroffice suite. I know Staroffice is free and for those who want a free suite it is wonderful to have available. SmartSuite for OS/2 is in all senses of the word, a fine suite of applications. Lotus123, WordPro and even Approach work very nicely and are impressive. There is just the one small and annoying glitch in Approach that really needs work and for a commercial application that requires payment I expect it to work properly. > > Gripe No. 2: > > > > Trying to empty my trash in Netscape 4.6.1. > I'm using PMMail happily for quite a while. It's not free though :-( I am very impressed with Communicator for OS/2 for many reasons. Like SS/2 it works exceptionally well in many areas including message, newsgroups and as a fine browser overall. They just need to correct this one small glitch and get an updated release out quickly. I have J Street Mailer and think it is top notch when it comes to emailers, even for a Java application. The problem with sorting and creating reports is a problem but overall, Approach has served me very well. I would like to be able to generate a report on my first try and it should not freeze the SS/2 application itself or my system (for that matter) so that needs to be corrected (and quickly Lotus, are you listening?). All of the SS/2 applications do a fine and expert job. My friends and buddies are very impressed and my college work reports, etc., are always presented in a professional manner. My personal feeling is that the Lotus OS/2 team dropped the ball on this one area of Approach and they need to fix it quickly. OS/2 is too fine an operating system to be hosed by the minor glitch in SS/2's Approach. > I wonder if DBExpert does what you want. I've never tried Approach, though I have SmartSuite. I have a fairly extensive database that runs on Alpha4 for OS/2. The problem is that Alpha doesn't support OS/2 anymore, but their database is a multiuser one, so as soon as you change from one record to another, the info is saved to disk while the record is unlocked and the new one locked. It's a character mode db, but it's never let me down and never frozen, even when sorting on multiple items. My records are about 30 items wide, and the biggest one is about 3500 records with no lockups. As an alternative, if you have Java installed, you can use MaxBase, a pure Java database w/reporting, etc. -bob- -- __________________________________________ F.R.Falbo | TheRef(tm) Website BeOS & OS/2 | http://theref.aquascape.com --- WtrGate+ v0.93.p7 sn 165 * Origin: Usenet: TheRef(tm) Website (1:109/42) +----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ From: donm@ftel.net 29-Oct-99 23:48:17 To: All 29-Oct-99 21:24:01 Subj: Re: Styler/2 AKA SmartWindows Increases Performace?
