═══ 1. License Tracking Utility Help ═══ The License Tracking Utility helps you, as a LAN administrator, keep track of the LAN Server software licenses on your LAN. ═══ 1.1. Overview ═══ The License Tracking Utility (LTU) can help you keep track of LAN Server software licenses on your network. Use Search to find the active computers in your selected domains and use Tag to designate the type of network software and its license status. LTU creates a list of computers in the network that are using LAN Server or compatible network software, and are active on the domains that you are connected to. LTU does this by searching your requester's default domain, your logged-on domain, and up to four other domains that you are interested in. (see How the list is created for details.) You can tag each computer in the list with the type of network software in use, and indicate whether the software is licensed or not. Once you have created the list of computers, you can save your work in an LTU file. You can retrieve the saved file later, and add or change entries in the list. You can sort the list by any column of data. You can also view a summary of your work and write a report file with summary and detail records. The summary shows, for each type of network software, how many computers are using the software, how many are licensed, and how many additional licenses are required. The report file contains the summary information (if you were displaying the summary at the time you wrote the report file), and the detailed computer listing. ═══ 1.2. Main Window Help ═══ Use Search to find the active computers in your selected domains and use Tag to designate the type of network software and its license status. For each active computer the main window displays the computer name, the logged-on user name, and the type of computer (server, requester, etc.), as well as the network software installed and the licensing status. From the main window, you can search the network for computers, tag computers with network software and licensing information, sort the list, start a new file, save your work in a file, open a previously saved file, write a report to a file, display a summary window, and exit the application. For an overview of the License Tracking Utility, see Overview. For more information on the list of computers, select: o How the list is created o Computer name o User name o Computer type o Network software type o Lic? For more information on menu items, select: o New o Open o Save o Save as o Summary o Write report o Exit o Search o Tag o Sort ═══ 1.2.1. How the list of computers is created ═══ LTU creates the list of computers by searching the network for active requesters and servers running LAN Server or compatible software. The search is limited to specific domains: your logged-on domain, your default domain, and up to four other domains. The other domains are specified in your requester's IBMLAN.INI file othdomain= parameter. You can modify the other domains temporarily with the NET CONFIG REQ command. LTU creates the list by searching each server in these domains, and noting each requester that is logged onto or using resources on each server. For LTU to search a network, you must be running LAN Server OS/2 requester software, and be logged onto the network. Your userid/password must be valid on each domain being searched, either as an administrator, a general user, or a guest. If your userid/password is not valid, that domain or server will not be searched. A computer is added to the list if it is running LAN Server or compatible software, and is logged onto or actively using resources on one or more of the domains being searched. The search process may take a long time for large networks with many servers and requesters. Also, some computers may not be found if the network is busy or heavily loaded. You can repeat the search process and the results will accumulate in the list. ═══ 1.2.2. Computer name ═══ The Computer name column in the main window shows the assigned name for each computer. This name must be unique on the network. It is specified by the computername= parameter in the computer's IBMLAN.INI file. ═══ 1.2.3. User name ═══ The User name column in the main window shows the logged-on user name for each computer. The user name is captured when the LAN is searched. If a different user logs on to a computer, you must search again to change the user name. If no user is currently logged on to the computer, Unknown is displayed. ═══ 1.2.4. Computer type ═══ The Computer type column in the main window shows the type or role of the computer. It will be one of the following: Domain Server: Primary Domain Controller. Backup Server: Backup Domain Controller. Server Server: not a Primary or Backup Domain Controller. Requester Requester: with or without Peer Services. ═══ 1.2.5. Network software type ═══ The Network software type column in the main window shows the type of network software installed on the computer, as you designated when you tagged it. ═══ 1.2.6. Lic? ═══ The Lic? column in the main window shows whether the network software is licensed or not, as you designated when you tagged it. The column displays a check mark if you designated it as licensed, or is blank if not licensed. ═══ 1.2.7. New ═══ New clears all data from the main window. If you created or changed data, a message displays to allow you to confirm whether you wish to discard the data. ═══ 1.2.8. Open ═══ Open allows you to select and open a previously saved LTU data file. Files with the extension LTU in the current directory are displayed by default. You may select a file from the list, browse other directories, or enter a path and filename. ═══ 1.2.9. Open LTU data file dialog ═══ This dialog allows you to select the LTU data file you wish to open. The files in the current directory with the extension LTU are listed by default. You can choose one of the listed files by double-clicking it with the mouse. You can also type a different filename, or browse the available drives and directories. The extension .LTU is the default extension for the data file but you may change it, if necessary. When you open a file, data from the file is added to the data currently displayed on the main window. ═══ 1.2.10. Save ═══ Save saves an LTU data file. The last file opened using Open is saved. If no file has been opened, a list of files is displayed to allow you to select one. ═══ 1.2.11. Save as ═══ Save as allows you to select an LTU data file to save your work. ═══ 1.2.12. Save LTU data file dialog ═══ This dialog allows you to select the filename for your data file. If you have previously opened a file the name is displayed as the default. You can select another name from the list, type a different name, or browse through the available drives and directories. ═══ 1.2.13.
