Lt. Mitch Buchannon

Mitch is the heart of the series. Now in his 40's, he is facing a midlife crisis, struggling to decide what he wants to do with his life. He recently fulfilled a lifelong dream by becoming part owner in a private investigation agency and is valiantly trying to balance two careers without losing time with his son, Hobie.

He's in great shape, very physical and athletic. He's a full-time lifeguard lieutenant, in command at lifeguard headquarters. All problems come to and through him, whether they are lifeguard issues or personal problems that other cast members are having. Mitch has a close relationship with the other lifeguards and will be at the center of most of the action and rescues.

His relationship with his son, Hobie, is another centerpiece of the show. Mitch was divorced from his wife, Gayle, a few years ago, and the long term effects of divorce and single parenting occasionally cause problems for Mitch and Hobie.
