A natural born leader and a champion swimmer from age eight forward, Cody has had his sights set on one day competing in the Olympics. However, his lifelong bout with asthma nearly cut his life short at age ten, not to mention shortchanging his Olympic chances. Through sheer force of will, Cody increased his lung capacity through swimming, breaking numerous records in high school. However, he failed to make the Olympic team in 1992.
Devastated, Cody moved to Southern California to get away. He decided to become a lifeguard as a means of supporting himself and staying active when not practicing. Competing in the `96 Games is the last thing on his mind, until he meets Stephanie who ignites Cody's competitive flame and as his "coach" pushes him to try out for the team.
