New Style Counselors: AMBER VALLETTA (top) and SHALOM HARLOW.After monthes of delay and secrecy, MTV has finally named models AMBER VALLETTA and SHALOM HARLOW as CINDY CRAWFORD'S successors as hosts of HOUSE OF STYLE. The new cohosts, who beat out such fashion fatales as LINDA EVANGELISTA, MICHELE HICKS, and CARLA BRUNI, are each riding a hot streak. Harlow was named female model of the year at VH1's Fashion & Music Awards, while Valletta was the Gucci girl for 1995.
Still, MTV didn't rush to crown the new queens of TV couture. Crawford's last show was in December, but the start date for Style's '96 season was pushed back two monthes, to March 11, because of the search.
Producer, ALISA BELLETTINI says "everybody and her grandmother" called for a shot at the job. She eventually auditioned 10 candidates. Surprisingly, supermodel KATE MOSS turned it down when it was offered to her in December. Fashion insiders say that despite the exposure and TV experience the show offers, the demanding schedule creates conflicts for models seeking high-paying print and runway work.
"Cindy had to work 80 to 100 days a year on the show," says one source. "With these girls' crazy schedules, they can only give 40 or 50." And though Bellettini had initially said two hosts would "take too much care and feeding," she now claims she likes the chemistry between the freshed-faced 21 year-old friends.
"They were looking for girls younger and less gorgeous ad voluptuous than Cindy," says a source at a top modeling agency. "That's today's look." Bellettini admits she wanted "someone who could grow into the role. I was definately not after another Cindy. It was time for a more street-oriented, les glamorous model."
In addition to Harlow and Valletta, the show's new look will include "news features and packages on cool things and things that suck," says Bellettini. "There'll also be more music from alternative bands." Crawford's departure will also allow for regular beauty features for the first time. The former host's Revlon contract prohibited mention of any other product line.
