"The Reselling of Couture"
William Doyle Galleries in NYC again auctioned classic couture by Chanel, Dior and others. The April 24-25 auction of Couture and Textiles was highlighted by the highest price ever paid for any couture dress sold at auction in the United States: a Charles James Evening Dress circa 1945 that sold for $49,450. It was purchased by the vintage clothing dealer, Cora Ginsburg, for a prominent international collector. Auctions are held twice a year. So who else is buying? And is there more going on here than just "the ladies who do lunch" looking for a bargain? Read our review of one of their recent auctions held last December.
"Uniforms"
Our first fashion editorial is on an important new trend that has inspired a number of American designers for Fall 1996. Uniforms. Photographed on location in New York City last month. Did you read Holly Brubach in a recent Sunday's New York Times Magazine go on about uniforms? She put a nice plug in for Stan Herman, who designs uniforms over the years for Federal Express, McDonalds, hospitals and even Glorious Foods-in addition to being Fern Mallis's boss and alter ego at the CFDA.
"Fashion & the Tents"
Read our special report by our contributing editor Bernadine Morris, the former fashion editor of the New York Times. She discusses the importance of the Bryant Parks shows for the future of American fashion.
It was announced recently that a "handshake agreement" was made with the Bryant Park Restoration Corporation to keep the tents up at Bryant Park. Although a number of major designers pulled out of the park last season, Fern Mallis was quoted in The New York Times saying "if we have enough people who want to show, it's our intent to remain in the park".
The "Bra" that fell from the sky
to the earth!Recently, one early morning in Weehawken New Jersey 3 women jumped out of the sky for the new "Lift Bra" by Wonderbra. We were there to report on this interesting public relations event. We expected the worst - but it turned out to be a lot of fun!
"Marc Jacobs"
He did it again! Marc's show again got rave reviews from the New York press. Was it earned or just more of the same old business? Read our editorial on the incestual relationship between certain RTW designers and New York fashion editors. Then view highlights of his fall'96 collection and make up your own mind.
"Victoria's Secret
Fashion Show"Their second runway show was again held at the Plaza Hotel in New York City. For the few of you who are interested in seeing supermodels in "scanty" underwear, click on for pictures and some comments about the evening.
"Todd Oldham"
Beauty photographs as well as runway from Todd's Fall'96 show. One of the best runway photographers in the world (and a friend) Randy Brooke provided us with these pictures. Judging from the pictures, he had the best seat in the house!!
"Kenneth Richard"
Kenneth has sure come along way! A fews years back he was building his own runway. Now, for his fall'96 collection, he showed in the "big tent" at Bryant Park. He is young, talented, married, and vitually ignored by WWD. What more nice things can we say?
"Donna Karan's Collection &
her past lives"The photo highlights of her fall'96 show at her showroom are now on-line. We thought that Donna Karen was the best show of the fall'96 season. We particularly liked her eveningwear!
Also, the Donna Karan web site will be completed one of these days. According to Chris Hood, the site will feature a newsletter where Donna can talk about her favorite subjects. Perhaps we will hear more about her past lives. She was quoted in the New York Magazine cover story of May 6: Donna Karan Corporate Goddess that: "I have experienced about seven past lives. I was very much the wanderer, through the lands of the Middle East: Egypt, India. I was an artist in Florence. I painted for the Medicis. But I don't remember any sort of recognizable-like a king or queen, any notable." Editor's note: Let's wait for the movie to come out!
Fashion Insiders:
"Chris Imbo"
If you are a fashion "heavyweight" or just a supermodel like Frederique trying to keep in shape - Chris is the man to see. All you need is about $5000 to start and a pair of sweats!
"Bill Marpet"
An interview with "Mr. Fashion Video" Bill Marpet who pioneered video cameras on the runway and currently shoots video for almost every major fashion house in New York.
Where the Fashion Elite
Meet to Eat:
"Torre di Pisa"
Review of a new restaurant from the fashion capitals of the world. First stop is Torre di Pisa, which opened last fall in New York City. Popular with the "Conde Nasty" crowd where even the "Queen Bee" herself - Vogue editor Anna Wintour - has been spotted lunching.
