Make-up Directions

A no-nonsense overview of forthcoming looks for eyes, lips and faces.

Looking ahead to the autumn, make-up directions mirror the electicism of fashion itself. There are no hard and fast rules - apply liberal doses of imagination and experiment with 70s glamour puss pouts and androgenous innocence.

EYES

Red Rage

No need to panic if you had one too many last night, many make-up artists are now making a positive feature of the red eye look using solid blocks of vibrant pinks and reds slashed across the lids. For extra drama you could go the way of Galliano and create a mohawk-style mask. Best worn with soft brown mascara and minimal face and cheek colour. Experiment with deep purples if you're feeling very 70s.

Try: Shu Uemura's bruised purple shades - purple 790 and grey 943, £9 each, Sensiq's duo shadow silk no.12 driftwood/coral coast, no.8 classy claret/crystal pink both £3.95 and Cutex's soft look eyeshadow no.210 moonstone mauve £3.95.

Blue Green Dream

With 70s starlets in mind, eyes are also shining in shimmering shades of blue and green. Think dreamy depths of the Med and you have the idea.

Try: The Body Shop's eyeshadow 02 - china blue, £3; Rimmel Eye Spy no.18 saucy mint and no.31 waterfall both £1.59.

LIPS

LIPS

Pale Pouts

Androgenous innocence is still big. This autumn/winter we'll be seeing plenty of unisex suits and the pivotal straight-legged pants with creases have emerged as the kecks for kicking around in. Make-up complementing this look is natural with a kick. Vibrant eyes are balanced with nude lips. Use lip balm for sheen (full on lip gloss will make you look a tad overdone).

Try: The Body Shop's combination of lip liner 01 £2.30, and the ginger treat shade of lip treat, £4.35; Rimmel no.31 nude beige, £2.29; Bourjois rouge seduction lipstick beige noisette, £3.75. For a clear lip balm, try The Body Shop's lip tint 06 natural, £3.25.

Plum Rouge

No-one is kissing bye bye to strong reds but plums and deep shades are leading the way. The sexiness of full, dark lips is a good evening alternative to the toned-down natural look for daytime.

Try: 'Purple In Theory' by Shiseido, £12.50; Cutex lasting colour lipstick no.45 porto glow, £3.79; Rimmel Aqua Silk no.11 coffee mist, £3.95.

SKIN

Simple is sorted. With the majority of attention moving to the eyes, foundations and face colour is best kept to a minimum. Test shades before buying and apply using a sponge or fingertips. If you must blush just slightly highlight cheekbones with pale pink shades.

Try: Shu Uemura's relaunched Nobara - a foundation which combines cream and powder elements. It's excellent for covering-up blemising as well as creating an overall colour. Available in 7 shades, £12 each.
