Milton's Marilyn. Page 20

Marilyn (formerly Norma Jean Baker) and photographer Milton Greene
(formerly Greengold the son of a Russian tailor)
worked closely for four years. She felt
more comfortable with Greene than with any other
photographer and the photos taken by him prove it. Marilyn often said
she wished she was the person she saw in them.
Marilyn moved into the Greene household
after her ill fated marriage to Joe DiMaggio broke up. Mrs.
Greene would tell friends she wasn't worried about Marilyn sleeping
over because Milton and Marylin were like siblings. It gets her angry
when people say otherwise. Ultimately Marilyn's erratic behavior and her
marriage to Arthur Miller severed the unusual relationship with the Greenes.
In a book titled 'Milton's Marilyn' by Hollywood biographer James Kotsilibas-Davis
he chronicles this four year relationship which resulted in the 2 movies 'Bus
Stop' and 'The Prince and the Showgirl'. The book also contains
over 150 never before seen photographs.

JANE AUSTEN Page 32

Jane Austen. What more is there to say? If you started reading her
books in your 20's you're sorry you missed years of Austen reading.
It's never too late to start reading Austen and in your 30's and up
you can really appreciate the subtleties of her prose.
This year is a great year for Austen devotees and beginners
alike. Movie versions of some novels are out with more on the way,
so you can get a taste, review and compare.
Sense and Sensibility's screenplay was written by Emma
Thompson who also stars in the film with Hugh Grant. Clueless, an
updated version of Emma set in modern day shallow Beverly Hills with
a foolish Alicia Silverstone is a more
authentic interpretation of Austen than Persuasion with all its
bonnets, bad teeth, dingy interiors and make-up less actors.
Austen is a great private read but to hear people tell it,
it's loads of fun when two or more get together to read it aloud.
There just aren't too many ways to enjoy Jane Austen.

CHIC STARVATIONPage 36

With austerity the chic item on the menu, the rich and famous
are now starving themselves, in the best restaurants.
Among those who no longer "do meat", are Diane Von
Furstenburg, Bianca Jagger. Marilu Henner shudders if she even
smells milk on someone's breath. Matthew Modine's wife always travels
with a suitcase of soy milk. Sophia Loren has organic food flown in from Geneva
and Madonna sends details to clubs ahead of time as to what she will deign
to eat - not bad for someone who supposedly used to brag about knowing which garbage
dumpsters contained the best meals. Tommy Tune comes equipped with his own
salt.

Blancing Act Page 88

Joni Evans, senior vice president of the William Morris Agency,
moderated the discussion between the group which included Diane
Sawyer, Liz Smith, Judy McGrath, Jeanine Ferris Pirro, and Mary
Anne Tighe.
What is success? According to Diane Sawyer it's when the work
thrills you and you believe it matters.
What does it take? Susie Tompkins, the 53 year old founder and
owner of Esprit says that she's always working even when she's bird
watching.
What does it take out of you? Natalie Marciano, a 29 year old
shoe designer learned the hard way that you can't do it all. After
becoming ill while trying to be the perfect person, she now uses
her health as a barometer. She works, cooks, has dinner parties,
and tries to do everything with her kids, but when she starts to
feel tired she takes it easy.
How to stay sane? Adrienne Vittadini finds that prioritizing
helps keep her together. Starting the day with exercise she
organizes her office day in the morning and designs in the
afternoon. She unwinds by reading novels on the weekends.
What does it take to be successful? According to this
successful group all it takes is; energy, resilience, focus,
resourcefulness, perseverance, hard work, faith, goals, luck, your
own dream.

MAKEUP THAT STAYS ON page 102

The makeup is great when you leave your house. A couple of
hours later it's gone. To the rescue! Long-wearing formulas, look
for silicone as an ingredient. Blotting Papers, try Shiseido, Estee
Lauder or Crabtree and Evelyn. Set makeup, for dry skin try
alcohol-free toners like Cliniques Mild Clarifying Lotion. If you
have oily skin try an oil absorbent powder like Cot's Airspun
Overtones or M.A.C.'s Blot Powder.
