John F. Kennedy The President John F. Kennedy Assassination Records Collection

The Collection

The President John F. Kennedy Assassination Records Collection Act (PL 102-526) mandated that all material relating to the assassination of President Kennedy be housed in a single collection in the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). On December 28, 1992 NARA established the John F. Kennedy Assassination Records Collection. Initially, the Collection consisted only of open assassination-related material already in the custody of NARA. Additions are being made as agencies complete their reviews and transfer newly opened records to NARA, but the Collection may not be complete for several years.

The Reference System

The act also mandated the creation of an electronic index to records relevant to the assassination of President Kennedy. As a pilot project, NARA is making the system available for searching via the World Wide Web.
