Sustainable Tourism

North-South Travel is recommended in the 'Global Consumer Guide' as a travel agency for cheap flights. It covenants all its profits to a trust supporting projects in developing countries. 'We offer discounted flights worldwide,' writes North-South Travel. 'Often we can match a quote you may have been given and then, because of our charitable status, you may prefer to use us.' It has also opened its own tourist-hotel in Suffolk; and has launched 'Travel Friends Inter-National', which seeks to relate travellers and tourists in Britain to people and organisations in destination countries.

'Travel with trekking companies that use kerosene, make no open fires, put on warm clothes instead, limit hot showers to two per week'

Tourism Concern is another organisation trying to promote responsible and sustainable tourism - in this case through a charter, codes, presence at conferences and publications. A sample item in its newsletter contains conservation tips for trekkers in Nepal, such as 'Conserve firewood; use stoves, stay at lodges that use kerosene or fuel efficient wood stoves, travel with trekking companies that use kerosene, make no open fires, put on warm clothes instead, limit hot showers to two per week and make sure your porters have warm clothing.'

'The Responsive Travellers' Handbook - A Guide to Ethical Travel World-Wide' has been published by the Centre for the Advancement of Responsive Travel on a subscription basis of L5 per year, but is available only to members of Tourism Concern (L12 per year) or Travel Friends Inter-National (L10 to join).

Finally, Equations is a group concerned with the impact of tourism on India and South East Asia and publishes reports such as 'The Impact of Tourism on India's Environment'.
