Garlic-absorbing trees for protection from rabbits

From the Sun (USA) monitored for the Institute by Roger Knights.

Researchers at the University of Washington in Seattle have saved thousands of trees from destruction by deer and rabbits by planting pellets beside them that give off the smell of garlic. The pellets are gradually dissolved by rainwater, absorbed by the roots and then spread throughout the entire tree.

The tree then eliminates the compound as dimethyl selenide (the smell of garlic breath). The deer and the rabbits find the smell offensive.
